Wisdom Siziba dies aged 28

Wisdom Siziba, one of many cricketers lost to Zimbabwe in recent years, has died in South Africa at the age of 28

Steven Price in Harare23-Apr-2009Wisdom Siziba, one of many cricketers lost to Zimbabwe in recent years, has died in South Africa at the age of 28.Siziba, who was an epileptic, died from heart failure while doing his laundry. He was alone at home at the time and his body was found by his sister. He will be buried in Bulawayo on Saturday.Siziba was a wicketkeeper-batsman from the high-density western suburbs of Bulawayo who enjoyed a relatively productive domestic career before joining the mass exodus from Zimbabwe to South Africa which has been a hallmark of the later years of the Mugabe regime. He either opened or batted in the lower middle-order, and made a memorable debut for Matabeleland, carrying his bat for a four-hour 40. By far his most successful season came in 2001-02 when he scored 423 runs at 42.30, including his only first-class hundred, 103 opening the innings against Midlands. His last season was in 2004-05, and as Zimbabwe’s cricketing infrastructure began to crumble, he was one of many lost to the game.He did not have a job after leaving school, preferring to earn his keep helping the ZCU with coaching, and as he attended a non cricket-playing school, he often had to make great sacrifices to continue playing. While he possibly lacked the footwork to succeed as a batsman at a higher level, he would have make an increasing impact in the first-class circuit.

Liverpool fans hail Curtis Jones brilliance

A number of Liverpool fans have been hailing Curtis Jones after he scored a brilliant free-kick with his weak foot in an England’s Under-21s training session.

Jones enjoyed a breakout season at Anfield in 2020/21, jumping from academy hopeful to reliable squad player under Jurgen Klopp.

The 20-year-old scored three goals and registered four assists in all competitions and he looks set to have a massive future ahead of him.

While Jones is yet to make an appearance for Liverpool this season, he is surely going to be used regularly once fully fit, allowing Klopp to rotate his midfield.

The youngster has outlined his natural talent with a stunning free-kick in England training, with Liverpool’s official Twitter account posting the clip on Monday.

Jones curls an inch-perfect effort into the corner, which is made even more impressive by the fact that he is using his weaker left foot.

In other news, some Liverpool fans are desperate for the Reds to sign one player next summer. Read more here.

Exclusive: Ex-Tottenham star drops huge Adama Traore take

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Graham Roberts insists that there is no sense in Adama Traore signing a new contract at Wolves.

The right winger was heavily linked with a potential move to Spurs throughout the summer transfer window.

Reports suggested that the north London club made an initial bid to take Traore on loan, with the option to buy him next summer, while other outlets have claimed that the club tabled a bid worth £30m in the final week of the window, but that Wolves valued him at £50m.

New reports after the close of the transfer window have since suggested that Wolves are now hopeful of the Spain international committing his future to the club.

Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield has claimed already that Wolves are in talks over a new contract for the forward.

His current deal is set to expire in 2023 but Roberts insists that there is next to no point in the 25-year-old putting pen to paper if he really hopes to take the next step in his career.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Roberts said: “If you’re Traore and you’re looking to play at a higher level, why would you sign a new contract at Wolves? It doesn’t make sense.”

Celtic reporter expects Hart to remain loyal if bids are lodged

The Celtic Way reporter Anthony Haggerty has alleged Joe Hart would turn down a return to England if his early season promise results in January transfer offers.

Hart made the move to Celtic from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur last month.

The switch came after Hart made just 10 appearances during a year-long spell with Spurs and saw himself demoted to the club’s third-choice goalkeeper after new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who was appointed in June, signed Atalanta shot-stopper Pierluigi Gollini on a season-long loan deal which has the option to buy.

With playing time set to be restricted even further, former England international Hart was keen to secure a transfer and has made an impressive start to life with Celtic, keeping four clean sheets in his first eight appearances for the Scottish Premiership title challengers.

After seeing a lack of Premier League suitors during the summer, Haggerty believes Hart will remain loyal to the Bhoys if an English club comes calling when the transfer window reopens in January.

He told Football FanCast: “I think if clubs did come back in for Joe Hart, he’d probably tell them where to go.

“In the short space of time he has been here, he has loved it. It would be an interesting one if an English club were to say ‘do you fancy coming back down the road?’ He would probably say ‘no, where were you when I needed you most?’ and I think he would give Celtic that loyalty.”

Spurs look to offload Aurier by 11pm

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to move Serge Aurier on before tonight’s deadline…

What’s the word?

According to the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (30th August, 15:37), the north London outfit are trying to find the 66-cap Ivory Coast right-back a new home so that they can sign Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

Italian outfit Genoa are the latest side to become interested in the 28-year-old, whilst Lille and the aforementioned La Liga side have also been mooted in the report.

It remains to be seen if Aurier will depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today – and for how much – with Transfermarkt currently valuing him at £18m, some four years on (to the day) from a £23m move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Paratici masterclass

This is a move that should have new sporting director Fabio Paratici absolutely lauded from the hilltops and it is one that will undoubtedly leave many buzzing in north London.

The Italian has only been at the Lilywhites for a couple of months now but he’s already identified Spurs’ problems and has looked to rectify them – out has gone several of the club’s long-serving players that have frequently let them down, such as the injury-prone Erik Lamela and the regressing Moussa Sissoko, among others.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

Aurier would be the next obvious candidate to face the chopping block and so he should after his revelation earlier in the window.

He told French publication L’Equipe of his intentions to leave Spurs this window, claiming: “Everyone knows that if I wanted to extend my contract at Tottenham, I’d have already done so. I’m not going to do that in six months’ time. I’ve experienced the Premier League and a Champions League final. I’ve reached the end of a cycle and it’s time to look elsewhere.”

On that evidence, it’s clear that Aurier does not want to be at the club, which is perhaps the reason why he is yet to feature for Nuno Santo this season.

Not that he warrants a place in the starting XI anymore, with Japhet Tanganga impressing in the role in recent matches.

Furthermore, the Mauricio Pochettino signing has regularly been lambasted for his performances on the pitch – for example, after defeat to Man City in the Carabao Cup final, Jamie Carragher described him as “one of the biggest liabilities in Premier League football.”

Indeed, it’s not the first time that the full-back has come in for criticism over his calamitous ways – former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara once brandished him “an absolute liability” on Twitter.

Spurs have since defeated the defending champions in his absence and whilst that may only be a coincidence, it’s a struggle to think he would’ve helped Nuno’s side at all.

Therefore, if Paratici can move him on before tonight’s deadline, then it’ll be a great move for all parties. This update from Sky Sports should leave many in north London thrilled.

West Indies bowlers worry Dyson

John Dyson said West Indies bowlers struggled to take wickets on “flat, international standard pitches”

As the rain and Arctic chill arrived in Dunedin yesterday, eliminating the entire second day of the first Test at the University Oval, West Indies’ head coach John Dyson acknowledged a troubling point. He said that, since he joined the team last March for the Sri Lanka series in the Caribbean, the bowlers had struggled to take wickets on “flat, international standard pitches”.”They are fine when the pitches do something but otherwise they find it difficult to bowl dot balls that build pressure on the batsmen,” Dyson said. Such was the case as New Zealand posted 226 for 4 on an opening day shortened to 73.2 overs by fading light under a heavy cloud cover.”I thought we bowled fairly well,” Dyson said. “This is a flat pitch. It’s not seaming, it’s not bouncing at pace and it’s not turning.” It was the reason for the use of a seven off-side, two leg-side field once the left-handers Tim McIntosh and Daniel Flynn became entrenched in a second wicket partnership of 87. Dyson did not accept the assertion that seeking wickets through attack, rather than containment, was the better option against opponents whose self-belief was crushed by Australia in their two Tests there last month.New Zealand made several personnel and positional changes as a consequence, including replacing John Bracewell as head coach with Andy Moles, and were under considerable media pressure. It seemed the right time to go hard at them. Yet, apart from brief periods, the West Indies fast bowlers were content to let the batsmen make errors on their own, rather than trying to induce it.The policy did not achieve its objective. Two of the four wickets were taken through inappropriate slogs by opener Tim McIntosh, who was caught at deep mid-on, and Ross Taylor, taken off a skier at square-leg. Another, Daniel Flynn fell for 95, ruled not out, then out lbw on the experimental umpires’ review system. All were victims of captain Chris Gayle’s casual off-spin. Only opener Jamie How fell to one of the four fast bowlers. “The disappointment was that they [bowlers] presented too many loose balls and too many that were free hits,” Dyson said. His point that they are as effective as any in international cricket once there is some help from the surface -and vice-versa – is borne out by events in last June’s home series against Sri Lanka and Australia. On placid pitches, Sri Lanka amassed 476 for 8 in the first Test at Providence in Guyana and Australia 431 at Sabina Park in Jamaica, 479 for 7 declared at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and 439 for 5 declared in the second innings at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. When the pitches encouraged the bowlers, Sri Lanka were defeated after being bowled out for 278 and 268 at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. Australia, however, won despite folding for 167 in the second innings at Sabina Park (from 18 for 5) and 251 in the first innings at Kensington.Almost by tradition, West Indies carried four fast bowlers into the Test here, omitting the solitary specialist spinner, Sulieman Benn. “There was a lot of discussion about that,” Dyson explained. “The fact that there had been a lot of rain in Dunedin in the lead-up to the Test, with the pitch mostly under covers, and an inspection the day before the match influenced the decision.”

Liverpool confirm Robertson contract

Lots of Liverpool fans have been left buzzing as it was confirmed that Andy Robertson has signed a new deal.

As per the official website of the Merseyside club, the Scotland international has signed a new long-term contract and finalised it at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday.

Robertson has been such a key player for the Anfield faithful over the years, helping them win both the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League in consecutive seasons (Transfermarkt).

He demonstrated his importance by not missing a single game in the top flight in the 2020/21 term, and has gone on to make no fewer than 177 appearances in total over all competitions for the Reds, scoring five goals and making a further 37 assists (Transfermarkt).

Aston Villa: Fans react to Bertrand Traore injury

Aston Villa winger Bertrand Traore suffered an injury at the weekend during a friendly against Liverpool, according to Foot Mercato.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Foot Mercato claim that Traore could well leave Villa Park before the window closes with Atalanta and AS Roma keen.

The report adds that the 25-year-old suffered a hamstring injury at Anfield after scoring in a 4-1 defeat and now looks set to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks.

Dean Smith used Anwar El Ghazi and Ashley Young out wide against Watford on Saturday, with new signing Leon Bailey coming on in the second half.

Traore also featured at Vicarage Road in the latter stages, but it now seems as if he has picked up an injury in a behind closed doors friendly with the Reds, 24 hours on from the 3-2 loss against the Hornets.
