Australia’s batting deficiencies with the moving ball have not been erasedby their return home from India. While the swing and seam was anticipated andthe Gabba pitch was tricky, the batsmen’s thoughts were cluttered andtheir shot selection scrambled. Going from flat surfaces to springy onesin a week is much harder than the other way around, but Australia expectedmore than 214 in their first innings on a day that ended with New Zealandin control. In India it was reverse-swing that tricked the batsmen on placid wickets, but here it was the traditional method used by an attack that is modest onflat pitches and extremely dangerous with some moisture in the wicket. Itwas probing and controlled bowling against confused and ill-disciplinedbatting. Both teams have known since they arrived in Brisbane that theconditions would be like this – some players expected them to be worsefollowing the deluge since the weekend – but it did not stop some of thelocals flapping like the sails at the top of the eastern stand that hadbeen ripped by a wild overnight storm. So they played for the line of the ball and were surprised to feel edgesheading for, between or through the slips cordon. Feet stayed stuck to thecrease as the bat waved, and the movement was not covered. The errors werecopied through the order. Some balls popped, others swung and seamed, butnot many were left by the top order. The assignment was difficult bymodern Test standards, but Australia made it look harder. On spongy greentops it is important not to be caught between attack anddefence, but the first three batsmen were in the mixed zone and after 7.1overs Tim Southee had the hosts 3 for 23. Southee exploited thetentativeness to gain edges from Matthew Hayden and Simon Katich whileRicky Ponting turned his bat and was unable to deal with the extra bounceas a leading edge went to second slip. The evolving Australian team has an identity crisis, not being surewhether to rebuild from the bottom or continue with theattack-from-all-positions method of their predecessors. All of NewZealand’s players know their roles and capabilities, from the impressiveSouthee to the casual medium pace of Jesse Ryder. Ryder, who was calledfor an over before tea, watched Brad Haddin swing loosely and edge toJamie How at second slip, before he came back to end the innings bybowling Michael Clarke.Haddin was unable to control his aggressive urges in India and if hisbatting mindset doesn’t change his days as Australia’s gloveman will belimited. He was not the only one to fall victim to a mistimed shot. ShaneWatson was a fortunate inclusion for the offspinner Jason Krejza – adecision which makes attaining the required over-rate even harder – andhung his bat out to edge Iain O’Brien to Brendon McCullum for 1. Two oversearlier the wicketkeeper had closed Andrew Symonds’ eventful 26 when thebatsman found himself in an awkward position to a testing delivery fromO’Brien.”A few guys will be disappointed because they were starting to feelcomfortable and then got out,” Clarke said. “That’s the way it goes. Onthat wicket we’re going to see more of that tomorrow. Once you get astart, guys will feel pretty comfortable, but I think you’ll see plenty ofzeroes to fives and tens because there’s enough bounce and certainlyenough seam there.”Luck contributes on days like this, but it sits next to application. Noplayer was more fortunate than Clarke as he showed he could produce someugly and highly effective runs. Clarke is a batsman who always wants topurr but he was able to tone down and was successful at a crucial time. Hecould have departed three times early in his 98, when balls squirtedbetween fielders behind point, and there were other miscues, near missesand a painful blow in the groin.”I never really felt that comfortable throughout my whole innings,” hesaid. “I felt like I had to work really hard all the time. As soon as Ilooked at the scoreboard and saw I was on 30, 40, 50 and thought I’d playa few more shots, every single time I had to pull my head in because Ididn’t feel that comfortable.”Clarke was able to settle and benefit from the good fortune and grittyoutlook. Michael Hussey had used the strategy sensibly in his 35 untilpadding up to Chris Martin, but the rest of Clarke’s partners were notprepared for the graft. Clarke was unable to be moved until Ryderdelivered an inswinger that the batsman missed while trying to drive. Hehad stayed for 217 balls, hitting nine fours mostly behind point, andAustralia were desperate for the contribution.”If you had have told me I was going to get 98 this morning, I would havebeen rapt,” he said. “Getting that close, and the way Stuey Clark hung inthere, I’m disappointed I didn’t get there, but at the end of the day theteam’s total is way more important. With 214 on the board I think we didpretty well, we hung in there and did well on that wicket.”When the situation is tough the current Australian outfit finds it moredifficult to eliminate their flashes and regain focus. Clarke showed themhow to overcome an edgy start and give them hope on a day that ended ingloom above the ground and around the home side. New Zealand’sinexperienced collection has already out-thought their opponents and hasthe opportunity for an upset if it can avoid the same errors that cost thehosts.

Saints fans love Broja signing

Southampton fans are absolutely delighted at the news they have signed Armando Broja on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

After a slow start to their transfer window, the Saints have finally kicked into gear. The south-coast outfit captured Romain Perraud (southamptonfc.com), Danyl Simeu (chelseafc.com) and Valentino Livramento – the latter two from Chelsea – while they have agreed a fee with Blackburn for Adam Armstrong (The Athletic).

Ralph Hasenhuttl will be hoping these new arrivals will help them improve on their 15th place Premier League finish from last term.

Now, they have brought in another fresh face, also from Chelsea, in Broja. The £2.7m-valued 19-year-old spent last term on loan at Vitesse Arnhem in the Netherlands and scored 11 goals in 34 games for the club (Transfermarkt) – he could be prove to be an inspired new arrival for the Saints.

The news was shared on Southampton’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Sunderland dealt blow in Jebbison pursuit

Sunderland have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Daniel Jebbison to the Stadium of Light this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun, who claim that Sheffield United are now considering the possibility of sending the centre-forward to Belgium, with Jupiler Pro League side Beerschot thought to be interested in the 18-year-old.

The report goes on to state that the Black Cats are still hopeful of clinching a deal for the England U18 international, although it is now thought that the Blades coaching team feels that a move abroad would benefit the youngster more than a move to the Stadium of Light.

Finally, it is claimed that Doncaster Rovers and Burton Albion are also interested in a loan deal for Jebbison, although the fight for the striker’s signature is said to primarily be between Sunderland and Beerschot.

Louis-Dreyfus will be fuming

Considering just how close it appeared Sunderland were to landing the signing of the Sheffield United centre-forward this summer, with the player being in attendance for the club’s final pre-season fixture against Hull City, should Jebbison indeed secure a move to Belgium rather than linking up with Lee Johnson’s side, it would undoubtedly leave Kyril Louis-Dreyfus fuming.

Indeed, while the 18-year-old does not exactly boast a wealth of experience in the EFL – or in any division, for that matter – he would nevertheless appear to be something of a coup for the Mackems, as he very much seems to possess an extraordinary amount of potential.

Having burst onto the scene by scoring the winner in a 1-0 victory over Everton towards the back end of last season – a goal that saw the £900k-rated man become the youngest-ever player to score on their first start in the Premier League – it was reported that the likes of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester United and Chelsea all added the striker to their shortlist of potential transfer targets this summer.

As such, it is somewhat surprising that Slavisa Jokanovic appears to be happy to sanction the temporary departure of the man Micah Richards dubbed a “fantastic” talent, as he could prove to be a very useful player for the Blades in their Championship campaign this season.

However, this is not something that should concern Sunderland, with it appearing highly advisable for Louis-Dreyfus to do everything in his power to beat Beerschot to the signing of the youngster – as he could well prove the difference between the Black Cats securing promotion and remaining a League One side come next summer.

Steve Howey urges Aaron Mooy to seek Celtic move

Steve Howey reckons former Premier League midfielder Aaron Mooy would be interested in reuniting with Ange Postecoglou at Celtic.

Mooy left Brighton & Hove Albion after Shanghai Port struck a £7.5million deal last year.

He has gone on to make 22 appearances for the Chinese Super League outfit, scoring two goals and registering three assists in the process.

The central midfielder, 30, previously made 120 appearances for Huddersfield Town and played a key role as the Terriers won promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2017.

Former top-flight defender Howey feels Mooy would be keen to turn his back on China in favour of heading to Scottish Premiership giants Celtic.

Mooy, who has won 42 Australia caps, played under new Celtic boss Postecoglou during his time in charge of the Aussie national side.

Postecoglou endured a difficult start to his reign at Parkhead after the Bhoys were knocked out of the Champions League in the second qualifying round and lost their Scottish Premiership opener against Hearts.

Howey thinks Postecoglou could turn to a familiar face to bolster his Celtic options and Mooy would be attracted to a move to Scotland.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “Going to Celtic could be a good move for him because there are a few more clubs doing well in Scotland now.

“Clubs are getting better and better, so it could be a good move for him.”

Leeds target Doig set for move

An update has emerged on Leeds target Josh Doig, with Jack Ross commenting on his future.

What’s the talk?

Hibernian manager Jack Ross has confirmed that Leeds target Josh Doig is closing in on an exit from the Scottish Premiership club this week. He explained that the left-back was left out of his matchday squad at the weekend as there is strong interest in him from other clubs.

Leeds are one of the clubs reportedly keen on signing the Scottish defender, who is likely to fetch a fee in the region of £4-5m.

He’d be perfect for Bielsa

Victor Orta must sanction a deal for Doig if there is still time for the club to swoop in and hijack any transfer for the defender, assuming Leeds are not the mystery club referenced in Ross’ admission, with the Evening News reporting that it is Burnley and Watford who are pushing hard to get a deal done.

Junior Firpo joined from Barcelona earlier this summer, but there is still a spot to fill behind him in the pecking order.

It would be fantastic in terms of competition within the squad for the Whites to have two talented left-backs competing for a place in the side. Firpo could start the season as the first-choice, with Doig potentially willing to bide his time for a chance as he only recently turned 19.

He still has the majority of his career ahead of him and spending a year learning from a former Barcelona full-back whilst training with Marcelo Bielsa could do him the world of good. The teenager has the attributes the Argentine coach wants from his players, which is why he could be a perfect addition.

Former Premier League defender Alan Hutton said earlier this year that Doig has a great engine and is aggressive in his play. He told Football Insider:

“He’s only 18 but he’s got a great engine, can get up and down, got a great left foot, aggressive. He is definitely one for the future.

“Whether he’s ready to step up to the Premier League right now? I also saw Leicester were supposedly looking at him.

“I think he’s a target teams would be looking at for the future. Get him down, integrated with the squad and build on what he already has.

“It’s no risk. There’s not much of a risk. You can definitely tell he’s a talented player. He’s got all the attributes to be a left-back or a wing-back. He is one that you’re hoping does well.”

Bielsa wants players who can cover the ground and work hard for the team throughout the 90 minutes with his pressing style of play.

This means that players who have a great engine and are aggressive, like Doig, are perfect for him. Therefore, Leeds must act to bring in the youngster before the end of the window and beat off interest from any other sides.

Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul has been ruled out for the remainder of the Asia Cup because of a rib cartilage injury. He has been advised two weeks rest, and Abdur Rauf takes his place in the squad.”Gul has been advised complete rest for at least two weeks and this is a big setback for us as he is one of our main bowler’s,” Salahuddin Ahmed, a Pakistan selector, told .Gul sustained the injury during Pakistan’s group match against India on Thursday. He pulled up in his first over and, despite receiving some treatment, had to leave the field after bowling only 1.2 overs. His departure left Pakistan’s bowling attack severely depleted and India chased down their target of 300 with 47 balls to spare.”I don’t know exactly what it is but I felt pain after just a few balls and it became unbearable,” Gul said. Abdur Rauf, the fast bowler who made his debut against Zimbabwe in February, is likely to be named as a replacement. Sohail Khan, who was part of Pakistan’s squad for the Kitply Cup in Bangladesh, hasn’t recovered from a malaria attack.Pakistan qualified second from their group after their loss to India and their first match of the second round is against Sri Lanka on Sunday.

Tottenham ‘serious’ about signing Pellegrini

According to a report by Calciomercato, as written in their headline, Tottenham Hotspur are ‘serious’ about signing Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini this summer with the club also ‘fast approaching’.

The Lowdown: Paratici turns to Italy…

Pellegrini is just one of the many Italian stars linked with a move to Spurs ever since the Lilywhites appointed new managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

The likes of Lorenzo Insigne, Domenico Berardi and Manuel Locatelli have also been mentioned as well as Serie A legend Leonardo Bonucci.

Now, Calciomercato bring the latest as Spurs eye yet another Azzurri international.

The Latest: Spurs ‘serious’ about signing Pellegrini…

Tottenham are ‘serious’ about signing Pellegrini this summer amid his current contract dispute with Roma.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates/” title=”Tottenham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 25-year-old’s deal is set to expire in 2022 as it stands with former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, now manager of Roma, speaking to the player in ‘recent days’ over his situation.

While Pellegrini’s first choice would be to remain at the Stadio Olimpico for the time being, Calciomercato says to ‘beware’ of interested clubs with the interest of Spurs ‘confirmed’.

They say Tottenham and Paratici are ‘fast approaching’ for the player but unwilling to pay his €30 million (£25.7m) release clause which expires in under 10 days.

The Verdict: Great option for Spurs…

Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ by Roma legend and World Cup winner Francesco Totti, the dynamic ace could certainly provide a real element of attacking threat in Tottenham’s midfield.

Scoring seven goals and assisting six others in 30 Serie A starts over 2020/2021 (WhoScored), Pellegrini also averaged more shots on goal per 90 (2.1) than any Tottenham player last season bar Harry Kane (3.9).

Indeed, he also reigns superior over almost every Spurs man in terms of key passes per 90 (1.9) apart from Son Heung-min (2) – marking him out as a real one to watch out for this summer.

van Jaarsveld's second ton seals Kent win

Martin van Jaarsveld continued his one-man show to bring up his second century of the match to complete Kent’s come-from-behind four-wicket win against Surrey. After rewriting the script on the third day to help dismiss Surrey for 130 with his first five-wicket haul, van Jaarsveld took full control of his happy ending by overseeing the chase with another effective innings which fittingly remained unbeaten. He had given a chance on the third evening and was missed again early in the morning off Saqlain Mushtaq on 74, the bat-pad pop dropped at short leg by Matthew Spriegel symptomatic of a lacklustre final-morning display from Surrey. But other than that he and Geraint Jones were content to nibble the readily-available singles and gobble up the boundaries – making a tense situation seem at times like a picnic.Together they moved Kent along in an assured sixth-wicket partnership of 71. Jones’ innings included three crisp clips off the legs and a fine pull all off the unchanged Saqlain until his drive at a wide, full one from Jade Dernbach ended with Ali Brown’s catch in the slips on 39.Jones proved Surrey’s sole scalp, their lingering hopes finally thrown away when the new batsman Yasir Arafat was missed on 2, with Abdul Razzaq’s straightforward spill at wide mid-on off Dernbach. It was left to van Jaarsveld to polish off proceedings, bringing up his second ton with a strong drive between mid-on and midwicket that was loudly applauded by a smattering of supporters. For the second day running, the plaudits belonged to van Jaarsveld who has now hit two centuries in a match three times. He achieved the feat on debut for Kent and had previously brought up the mark for Northerns against Griqualand West in 2002. This was the first time, however, he had achieved a five-wicket haul – indeed his previous best was a two-fer – and it came at a good time for Kent, his efforts completely reversing the flow when Surrey were well-placed to bring up their first win of the season. For so long in this match it had seemed that the stage was set for the beginning of a post-Twenty20 resurgence similar to last year. With that distraction out of the way, in 2007 Surrey turned their Championship campaign around and from relegation candidates stormed up the table. van Jaarsveld, however, ensured they remain winless this season, while Kent brought up their second win, helping them up a tight table where every point is precious. For the record, it was the third time a Surrey opponent has brought up two centuries and taken five wickets against them. Jack Newman did it for Hampshire in 1907 and John Human for Cambridge University in 1933 – but neither’s work was in a winning cause. van Jaarsveld’s history-making actions will be remembered for a long time, and could prove vital in the short term.

Newcastle among clubs chasing Kabak

Newcastle United are competing for the signature of former Liverpool loanee Ozan Kabak, according to Bild.

The lowdown

Kabak spent the latter half of the 2020/21 season on loan at Anfield amid a centre-back injury crisis, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all out injured.

The youngster played 13 games in total, averaging 2.9 successful aerial duels, 2.1 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and three clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League (via WhoScored).

Though Kabak helped Liverpool pick up the points they needed to secure a top-four finish, they decided not to sign him permanently.

Newcastle have emerged as a possible destination, with centre back considered a ‘key area’ for recruitment. Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer and Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo have also been looked at (via The Athletic).

The latest

The expectation is that the uncertainty around the future of the Turkish international will soon be resolved by a huge battle for his signature.

As well as Newcastle, Kabak is the subject of interest from Premier League teams Leicester and Crystal Palace and Ligue 1 sides OGC Nice and Rennes.

Kabak is set to choose his preferred destination, and then Schalke will enter into negotiations over a transfer fee.

They’re now hoping to pocket €15million (£12.8million) from the deal, having agreed an £18million option to buy with Liverpool back in January which the Reds deemed too much.

The verdict

Kabak would be an outstanding signing for Newcastle. After a shaky start, he performed well for Liverpool in hugely difficult circumstances and ought to be regarded as part of the next generation of top centre-backs.

Schalke are said to be ‘financially weak’ after relegation, and Newcastle may well be sensing an opportunity for a mighty bargain.

Leicester may be able to offer Kabak European football and a more exciting project, but crucially, with Wesley Fofana, Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans already on their books, his game-time might be limited.

He’d surely be guaranteed a fair crack at a starting spot at St James’ Park, especially if Steve Bruce opts to play a back five.

In other news, Newcastle have been told what to do what this promising youngster.

Man City linked with Antonee Robinson

Manchester City have been linked with a move for Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson recently and if he were to join, it could see Benjamin Mendy finally depart Pep Guardiola’s side.

According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester City, along with a number of other top-flight clubs, are said to be interested in signing the USA international this summer.

Robinson was a regular for the Craven Cottage outfit last season as they were relegated from the Premier League, making 28 appearances and averaging an impressive 6.84 rating from WhoScored for his performances, which was enough to rank him as the joint-third best performer for the West London side.

Scott Parker was full of praise for the young left-back in his debut season in the Premier League, saying:

“He’s done incredibly well. [He’s] a boy with a big, big heart and a boy with a fearless attitude that embraces and takes things on a daily basis, same as in the games.

“He’s got quality and ability which I think we’re all seeing. [There’s] still loads to improve and loads to learn, but he has a real work ethic about him and a mentality about him that he’s willing to do that.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

City are not short of options at left-back, with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Joao Cancelo, Benjamin Mendy and Nathan Ake rotating there last season, which suggests that if the £6.3m-rated Robinson were to arrive at the Etihad, at least one of them would have to leave.

Of those, it seems extremely unlikely that Zinchenko or Cancelo would depart after superb performances last season, whilst Ake spent much of the season injured and also offers depth at centre-back, so Mendy would surely be the likeliest to leave.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936″]

Recent reports have linked the injury-prone Frenchman with a move to Inter, so if he does leave and City do look for a replacement, then sporting director Txiki Begiristain should definitely consider a move for Robinson, as he looks to be a great young back-up for Guardiola to have in his squad.

And, in other news… Man City miss out on “phenomenal” 29-goal beast, Guardiola will be fuming
