Bad omens and false dawns for England

Andrew Miller presents the plays of the day as South Africa crushed England at Trent Bridge

Andrew Miller at Trent Bridge11-Jun-2009Bad omen of the dayRavi Bopara and Luke Wright have very different approaches to top-order biffing. One is all culture, the other agriculture, but between them they’ve managed to provide England with something resembling a platform in the competition so far. Today, however, it all went wrong with disturbing predictability. Bopara was suckered by Dale Steyn’s slower ball and chopped onto his stumps; Wright whooshed with woolly abandon at anything outside off, and eventually feathered his sixth delivery to the keeper. Two wickets down inside two overs. Whoops.Catch of the dayAnd yet, incredibly, salvation seemed to come striding out of the pavilion. There are some days when it’s hard to see how Kevin Pietersen can possibly be stopped. This was shaping up as one of them. He flicked his first ball dismissively through midwicket, then drove his second crisply down the ground, before welcoming Jacques Kallis with two more fours in his first over of the match. By the end of the fifth over Pietersen had scored 19 of England’s 25 runs, with the promise of many, many more. But then, up popped Roelof van der Merwe at mid-on, stretching in mid-air to intercept a scuffed drive off a low full-toss, and England’s momentum was never able to recover.Over of the dayOver of the tournament, for that matter. In the sixth over of the 14th match, and with some 450 overs already delivered since last Friday’s curtain-raiser, Albie Morkel put a seal on England’s Powerplays by sending down the first maiden of the tournament. Having extracted Pietersen with his second delivery, Morkel merely pitched it up and invited the new batsman, Paul Collingwood, to bosh him back over the top. Unsurprisingly, Collingwood declined, and chose instead to get his eye in, as England dribbled to 25 for 3 after six overs – the lowest Powerplay total of any side so far.Bowler of the dayBy rights that honour should have gone to Morkel, but Graeme Smith obviously saw something amiss in his six deliveries, because he was promptly retired to the outfield with the improbable analysis of 1-1-0-1. Instead it was over to Wayne Parnell to destroy England. In one delivery shy of a full quota, he claimed 3 for 14, including two timber-rattlers in consecutive deliveries to end the aspirations of Stuart Broad and James Anderson. In 24 deliveries (including one wide) he conceded a solitary boundary, and that too would have been caught on the rope had Smith had an extra metre in which to operate. Zipped down from a great height onto a full length, and from an unfamiliar left-arm line, it was unplayably effective stuff.Ignominy of the dayAs if being bowled out inside 20 overs wasn’t embarrassing enough, England achieved a raft of lows in their pitiful batting performance – their score of 111 was the lowest first-innings total in the tournament so far (not including Scotland’s seven-over slog against New Zealand last week), and England’s worst effort in 18 T20Is dating back to June 2005. Perhaps the single most damning indictment of their efforts, however, came down at Taunton, where England’s women were set a target of 112 for victory against India … and achieved it with ten wickets and 26 balls to spare.False dawn of the dayIn reply, England opened up with Dimitri Mascarenhas, and – shock horror! – South Africa were briefly becalmed. His first five deliveries were all patted back by Smith, giving rise to the prospect of a second maiden in as many innings. That was scotched when Smith worked the final delivery to square leg for a single, but nevertheless, England appeared to be putting up a fight, especially when Smith went cheaply in Broad’s first over. But then, inexorably, the South African machine, aka Jacques Kallis, ground into motion. And nothing in his path stood a chance.

Celtic reporter expects Hart to remain loyal if bids are lodged

The Celtic Way reporter Anthony Haggerty has alleged Joe Hart would turn down a return to England if his early season promise results in January transfer offers.

Hart made the move to Celtic from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur last month.

The switch came after Hart made just 10 appearances during a year-long spell with Spurs and saw himself demoted to the club’s third-choice goalkeeper after new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who was appointed in June, signed Atalanta shot-stopper Pierluigi Gollini on a season-long loan deal which has the option to buy.

With playing time set to be restricted even further, former England international Hart was keen to secure a transfer and has made an impressive start to life with Celtic, keeping four clean sheets in his first eight appearances for the Scottish Premiership title challengers.

After seeing a lack of Premier League suitors during the summer, Haggerty believes Hart will remain loyal to the Bhoys if an English club comes calling when the transfer window reopens in January.

He told Football FanCast: “I think if clubs did come back in for Joe Hart, he’d probably tell them where to go.

“In the short space of time he has been here, he has loved it. It would be an interesting one if an English club were to say ‘do you fancy coming back down the road?’ He would probably say ‘no, where were you when I needed you most?’ and I think he would give Celtic that loyalty.”

Liverpool fans hail Curtis Jones brilliance

A number of Liverpool fans have been hailing Curtis Jones after he scored a brilliant free-kick with his weak foot in an England’s Under-21s training session.

Jones enjoyed a breakout season at Anfield in 2020/21, jumping from academy hopeful to reliable squad player under Jurgen Klopp.

The 20-year-old scored three goals and registered four assists in all competitions and he looks set to have a massive future ahead of him.

While Jones is yet to make an appearance for Liverpool this season, he is surely going to be used regularly once fully fit, allowing Klopp to rotate his midfield.

The youngster has outlined his natural talent with a stunning free-kick in England training, with Liverpool’s official Twitter account posting the clip on Monday.

Jones curls an inch-perfect effort into the corner, which is made even more impressive by the fact that he is using his weaker left foot.

Celtic: Sviatchenko set to stay at Midtjylland

Rumoured Celtic target and former defender Erik Sviatchenko is set to stay at FC Midtjylland this summer, The Daily Record report.

The Lowdown: Celtic links

The Hoops have brought in three centre-backs this summer in Carl Starfelt, Liam Scales and Osaze Urhoghide but were linked with a swoop for Sviatchenko back in June.

Reports then suggested Ange Postecoglou had Sviatchenko on a list of potential targets at Parkhead, with the 29-year-old having unfinished business in Glasgow.

However, any chance of a shock late swoop in the current window have diminished.

The Latest: £2m bid

The Daily Record posted an update on Sviatchenko on their live deadline day blog (31/08, 10:35).

They suggested that the centre-back is in the middle of a transfer stand-off, with Midtjylland turning down a £2m bid for his services.

Dinamo Zagreb are also keen on Sviatchenko, with Midtjylland sports director Svend Graversen having this to say on the defender:

“Erik will not be sold. We are insanely happy with him and he will stay here.”

The Verdict: A good summer

The Hoops, overall, have had a productive window and look set to come out with a profit.

As deadline day got underway, Celtic had spent just over £17m on nine signings and had brought in just under £17m on various exits.

Ryan Christie has left and Odsonne Edouard also looks set to bump up the departure accounts, while Georgios Giakoumakis has joined and Filipe Jota has also arrived on loan.

Postecoglou also wanted a centre-back on deadline day, but with the market ‘proving difficult’ for one, it doesn’t look like a defender will arrive, definitely not summer target Sviatchenko, anyway.

Spurs look to offload Aurier by 11pm

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to move Serge Aurier on before tonight’s deadline…

What’s the word?

According to the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (30th August, 15:37), the north London outfit are trying to find the 66-cap Ivory Coast right-back a new home so that they can sign Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

Italian outfit Genoa are the latest side to become interested in the 28-year-old, whilst Lille and the aforementioned La Liga side have also been mooted in the report.

It remains to be seen if Aurier will depart the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today – and for how much – with Transfermarkt currently valuing him at £18m, some four years on (to the day) from a £23m move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Paratici masterclass

This is a move that should have new sporting director Fabio Paratici absolutely lauded from the hilltops and it is one that will undoubtedly leave many buzzing in north London.

The Italian has only been at the Lilywhites for a couple of months now but he’s already identified Spurs’ problems and has looked to rectify them – out has gone several of the club’s long-serving players that have frequently let them down, such as the injury-prone Erik Lamela and the regressing Moussa Sissoko, among others.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

Aurier would be the next obvious candidate to face the chopping block and so he should after his revelation earlier in the window.

He told French publication L’Equipe of his intentions to leave Spurs this window, claiming: “Everyone knows that if I wanted to extend my contract at Tottenham, I’d have already done so. I’m not going to do that in six months’ time. I’ve experienced the Premier League and a Champions League final. I’ve reached the end of a cycle and it’s time to look elsewhere.”

On that evidence, it’s clear that Aurier does not want to be at the club, which is perhaps the reason why he is yet to feature for Nuno Santo this season.

Not that he warrants a place in the starting XI anymore, with Japhet Tanganga impressing in the role in recent matches.

Furthermore, the Mauricio Pochettino signing has regularly been lambasted for his performances on the pitch – for example, after defeat to Man City in the Carabao Cup final, Jamie Carragher described him as “one of the biggest liabilities in Premier League football.”

Indeed, it’s not the first time that the full-back has come in for criticism over his calamitous ways – former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara once brandished him “an absolute liability” on Twitter.

Spurs have since defeated the defending champions in his absence and whilst that may only be a coincidence, it’s a struggle to think he would’ve helped Nuno’s side at all.

Therefore, if Paratici can move him on before tonight’s deadline, then it’ll be a great move for all parties. This update from Sky Sports should leave many in north London thrilled.

AND in other news, Paratici dealt Spurs transfer blow over £22.5m-rated “young Pogba”, fans surely gutted…

Players' chief slams NZ selectors for poor communication

Heath Mills, the New Zealand Players’ Association chief, has criticised the national selectors for failing to be compassionate to players dropped from the team

Heath Mills, the New Zealand Players’ Association chief, has criticised the national selectors for failing to be compassionate to players dropped from the team. Though Mills would not name any players hurt by unexpected exclusions, he said at such a time it was important for selectors to communicate with them.”When a player is dropped, they’re hurting,” Mills told . “That’s when they need our support more than ever. That’s when communication has to be at its best.”You’ve got a team of kids who are trying to gel and it’s important to treat with them with compassion when things don’t go well. It’s effectively the same situation as someone losing their job if they miss the side.”Last month fast bowler Chris Martin had expressed his disappointment at being left out of the squad for the home series against West Indies. “They [selectors] are picking guys who are in form and they have told me they want someone to run in and ruffle the tailenders,” Martin said. “Dizzy [Mark Gillespie] is good at that and I didn’t do that in Adelaide. We struggled to clean out their lower order, but I felt I opened the door a few times against them in the series with top-order wickets.”Mills believed some of the lack of communication stemmed from the restructuring of the board in June last year. Geoff Allott is yet to take on his role as New Zealand’s general manager of cricket and Mills said that had “probably created a big hole”.”Clearly we’ve had a transition in staff who may not have understood what the requirements were in terms of good communication. In the last six-seven years in cricket it’s been a lot better than it was but just lately there’s been a couple of blips. We’re working on that with New Zealand Cricket and we’re going to smooth it out and get it back to where we need to be.”Glenn Turner, the chief selector, admitted the system of communication was not perfect but said the selectors made a real effort to call players after the squad had been announced. “It has happened where we have meant to ring somebody and we haven’t,” Turner said. “Chris [Martin] was actually on our list and we didn’t get to him. I’ve called him since and we’ve talked about it. He’s quite happy with the call and what was said.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Bertrand Traore injury

Aston Villa winger Bertrand Traore suffered an injury at the weekend during a friendly against Liverpool, according to Foot Mercato.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Foot Mercato claim that Traore could well leave Villa Park before the window closes with Atalanta and AS Roma keen.

The report adds that the 25-year-old suffered a hamstring injury at Anfield after scoring in a 4-1 defeat and now looks set to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks.

Dean Smith used Anwar El Ghazi and Ashley Young out wide against Watford on Saturday, with new signing Leon Bailey coming on in the second half.

Traore also featured at Vicarage Road in the latter stages, but it now seems as if he has picked up an injury in a behind closed doors friendly with the Reds, 24 hours on from the 3-2 loss against the Hornets.

Liverpool confirm Robertson contract

Lots of Liverpool fans have been left buzzing as it was confirmed that Andy Robertson has signed a new deal.

As per the official website of the Merseyside club, the Scotland international has signed a new long-term contract and finalised it at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday.

He demonstrated his importance by not missing a single game in the top flight in the 2020/21 term, and has gone on to make no fewer than 177 appearances in total over all competitions for the Reds, scoring five goals and making a further 37 assists (Transfermarkt).

England captain Kane saw a big-money move to Old Trafford speculated on across several windows during his time at Tottenham. No deal was ever done, with Spurs reluctant to do business again with a Premier League rival.

United, as a result, were forced to explore other avenues. They invested £72 million ($92m) in Rasmus Hojlund when luring him away from Atalanta in 2023, but have seen the 22-year-old Dane register just 23 goals through 78 appearances – with only 12 of those efforts coming in the English top-flight.

DID YOU KNOW?

Joshua Zirkzee is another forward that has failed to deliver on expectations, with five goals recorded on the back of a £36.5m ($47m) transfer, and United continue to count the cost of not pushing harder for Kane – who has maintained a stunning strike rate since linking up with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

GettyWHAT GARY PALLISTER SAID

Former Red Devils defender Gary Pallister, speaking in association with , told GOAL when asked what the recruitment priority for United needs to be in the summer of 2025: “A centre-forward! [Ruben] Amorim has said that himself.

“We need a centre-forward. I don’t think Zirkzee is a centre-forward, he likes to play in the 10 and a bit deeper. I don’t think he can lead the line. Rasmus, you can’t fault him for his effort – he puts a shift in, runs into channels. He’s finding it hard. He needs a bit more guile to his game.

“We can’t afford to wait to see if Rasmus is going to be the real deal. It’s a struggle for him at the moment and we need somebody that can come in and is a proven goalscorer. Who that is, I’m not quite sure. There has been talk of the guy at Sporting [Viktor Gyokeres], the guy at Napoli [Victor Osimhen].

“I think they definitely missed a trick not signing Harry Kane a season-and-a-half ago. We knew he was a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and with what they have been wasting of late, he would have been an absolute guarantee of scoring goals.”
