Improved Derbyshire chase promotion

Mark Turner took the first five-wicket haul of his career as Derbyshire took control on the third day of their match with Division Two league leaders Northamptonshire at Wantage Road

George Dobell at Wantage Road22-Jul-2011
ScorecardUsually when Derbyshire are in the news, it’s because some halfwit is claiming they are just the sort of club which should be bull-dozed in an attempt to ‘improve the intensity’ of the county game. While that argument might not hold much water, Derbyshire haven’t always helped themselves. They have not produced an England player since Dominic Cork (who some might argue was a product of Staffordshire), have not played in the top division of the County Championship since 2000 – the first year of two divisions – and they are the only team in the land to never achieve promotion in either limited-overs or first-class cricket. They have, for a while, struggled to justify their existence. It’s harsh to state, but they’ve flirted with irrelevance.Perhaps, however, all that is starting to change. Just two months after they sacked their former director of cricket, Jon Morris, the signs are that the ‘new’ team is emerging as genuine promotion candidates. Indeed, if they win this game, they will have put themselves right in the thick of the promotion chase. It would not be too much of an exaggeration to state that their whole season could be defined by the final day of this game. The simple fact is this: going into the last day, they lead by 260 runs. While that might not sound too impressive, it should be understood that the pitch is showing increasing signs of uneven bounce and batting last could prove very tricky. Had 23 overs not been lost to rain and bad light on the end of the third day, their position would have been even stronger. If they do go on to win, they will be particularly grateful for the contribution of Mark Turner. The 26-year-old fast bowler, now with his third county, produced the first five-wicket haul of a first class career that began in 2005 to help earn his side an 89-run lead on first innings. While Turner has often bowled with pace, here he also demonstrated excellent control, claiming his last four wickets at the cost of just two runs, including a spell of three for none in 18 balls. The wickets of Niall O’Brien and Lee Daggett, stumps sent flying by swinging yorkers, were especially pleasing.Wes Durston also batted well. Durston, another former Somerset man, took several painful blows on the arms as the ball reared horribly, but thrashed a run-a-ball half-century to snuff out Northants’ hopes of a counter-attack. Hitting the ball with unusual power, Durston wasparticularly severe on the spin of Rob White and James Middlebrook, plundering 41 off them in their four overs including an enormous straight six off the latter.Northants didn’t really help themselves. Chaminda Vaas, who is starting to look every one of his 37 years, has bowled 10 no-balls in this match, with the most costly of them inducing an edge from Wayne Madsen that was comfortably taken at slip. Madsen, on 7 at the time, went on to score 48 and added 87 with Durston.Daggett bowled well, however. Hitting a better length than his colleagues, he was able to exploit the uneven bounce and, with his first delivery, dismissed Martin Guptill, caught off the glove from a brute of a ball that reared, before Durston’s valuable innings was ended by a similar delivery.Northants’ season is also at something of a crossroads. Their lead at the top of the Division Two table – a lead that looked unassailable a few weeks ago – is starting to look precarious, with the team having surrendered their unbeaten record in all competitions and enduring ahorrible run of form in the FLt20.It appears increasingly unlikely that fast bowler Jack Brooks will be with them next year, too. Northants have now received five formal 28-day approaches from other counties keen to talk to Brooks and Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket, was at Wantage Road on the third day to take a closer look.It was not, perhaps, the most distinguished performance of Brook’s season, but he has proved himself a decent performer over the last year or so and has bowled as well as anyone in county cricket this season. The clamour for his services also says something about the scarcity of fast bowlers in the county game at present. There was one more notable visitor at Wantage Road. Winston Davis, the former West Indies fast bowler who spent fours season with Northants between 1987 and 1990 returned to the club to attend the annual former players’ day.Sadly the years since have not been as kind to Davis as they might have been. Davis, who memorably took 7 for 51 against Australia in the 1983 World Cup, suffered horrific injuries after he fell from a tree in 1998 and was paralysed from the neck down. Needless to say, hewas afforded a very warm welcome on his return to the club.

Openers ensure Sussex stroll to victory

Sussex openers Chris Nash and Ed Joyce took their four-day form into one-day cricket as their side crushed Derbyshire by eight wickets at Hove

15-May-2011
ScorecardSussex openers Chris Nash and Ed Joyce took their four-day form into one-daycricket as their side crushed Derbyshire by eight wickets at Hove to go top ofClydesdale Bank 40 Group A.The pair have already compiled four century stands in the CountyChampionship this season and they put on 161 in 26 overs as the Sharks madelight work of their target of 197 to make it three successive wins after theyhad lost their opening game to today’s opponents a fortnight ago.Their partnership was a new county record against Derbyshire in one-daymatches, beating the 137 by Alan Wells and Martin Speight in 1990, and thefourth highest stand for any Sussex wicket in List A cricket. Both scored freely against a toothless attack on a flat pitch and the only disappointment was that neither scored a century.Nash needed treatment after he was struck on the left hand by a bouncer fromJon Clare and was on 78 when he mistimed a drive to mid-off off slow left-armerChesney Hughes. Joyce fell to Hughes for 90, which included 11 fours, when he holed out to deep midwicket but debutant Lou Vincent hit the next ball for six and Sussex wrappedup victory with 9.5 overs to spare.Earlier, Derbyshire had collapsed badly after a fourth one-day half-century ofthe season from Wes Durston appeared to have put them on course for an imposingtotal. Left-armer Chris Liddle picked up openers Usman Khawaja and Hughes insuccessive overs before Durston led the fightback by adding 48 in 11 overs withGreg Smith.Naveed Arif was convinced he had run out Durston on five when he claimed tohave deflected Smith’s straight drive onto the stumps and on 28 he survivedanother alarm when a pull dropped just short of the diving Nash at deepmidwicket.Smith, who was dropped by Vincent on 16, fell two balls later when he drove tomidwicket but Durston and Wayne Madsen played well in a punishing stand of 91from 98 balls for the fourth wicket. The visitors took their batting powerplay in the 33rd over but then their innings started to unravel as five wickets fell for just six runs in 15 balls.Sussex skipper Mike Yardy had Madsen caught off a mistimed slog sweep and inhis next over Yardy struck with successive deliveries. Durston was deceived by achange of pace and bowled for 85 off 103 balls, which included seven fours and astraight six off Monty Panesar.Luke Sutton was leg before wicket to the next delivery and although SteffanJones blocked the hat-trick ball he holed out to long-on in the next over, thesecond success for Rana Naved who had earlier yorked Jon Clare.Garry Park and Azeem Rafiq halted the collapse but on a true pitch a target of197 was never going to seriously extend Sussex and so it proved.

Duas peças do meio-campo do Internacional apresentam melhora física

O JOGO

Mano Menezes rasga elogios ao time no empate contra o Internacional

Umar Akmal uncertain for Zimbabwe clash

Pakistan will continue to sweat over the finger injury to Umar Akmal after the batsman, again, missed practice

Pakistan will continue to sweat over the finger injury to Umar Akmal after the batsman, again, missed practice. His chances of playing in Pakistan’s game against Zimbabwe on Monday are uncertain.Umar travelled with the team to Pallekele stadium near Kandy for an optional training session on Saturday but didn’t bat, his right index finger still strapped. He did some running and nothing else. The nature of the injury isn’t clear and scans and X-rays have revealed no fracture.”There is some swelling still there so he didn’t bat today,” Intikhab Alam, the team manager said. “We will see as far as the game on Monday is concerned but it will take a couple of days still.”Umar picked up the injury during fielding practice on Thursday and sat out Friday’s session as well though the management was eager to play down the injury then. It came soon after the loss to New Zealand, a game in which his elder brother Kamran played a central role, dropping three chances, prompting calls for his axing. The Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi subsequently spoke of the possibility of Umar replacing Kamran as wicketkeeper. The injury means that will not happen now and Kamran is almost certain to retain his place, but the timing has led to talk of a repeat of what happened in the aftermath of the Sydney Test last year. , a leading Urdu daily, reported that the pair had been spoken to by the management and told in no uncertain terms that a repeat of Sydney would not be tolerated.Umar is the side’s second leading scorer in the tournament, with 167 runs in four games at nearly 42. He has only a solitary fifty though has got starts in a couple of other games. If he does sit out – and against a relatively weaker side Pakistan may be tempted to rest him – Asad Shafiq will come in. Shafiq had a long batting session in practice and will slot into the middle order.Umar’s absence may also mean another chance for Ahmed Shehzad, who, had all players been fit, would probably have been dropped after a run of poor scores. But Pakistan are keen to stick with eight batsmen so he may be retained. There is talk of resting Shoaib Akhtar and bringing in Wahab Riaz, something Pakistan tried against Canada, or even playing with three spinners.Afridi, Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Gul, Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib opted not to train today.

In-form Bell eyes Twenty20 spot

Ian Bell believes he has made a strong case to be included in England’s Twenty20 side after a match-winning 124 against the Prime Minister’s XI which continued his outstanding form on the tour of Australia

Ian Bell believes he has made a strong case to be included in England’s Twenty20 side after a match-winning 124 against the Prime Minister’s XI which continued his outstanding form on the tour of Australia. Bell hasn’t been part of the Twenty20 side since 2008, but with Craig Kieswetter out injured there is a vacancy at the top of the order.Michael Lumb, the Hampshire opener, has been drafted into the squad although his form is nowhere near that of Bell’s after making just 2 in his first Big Bash appearance for Queensland. Lumb opened throughout the World Twenty20 in West Indies, but hasn’t appeared for England since, due to a combination of a form slump and injury.Bell’s run-scoring spree could mean Lumb misses out again against Australia, in Adelaide, on Wednesday. “I’ll have to wait and see,” Bell said. “I obviously haven’t done myself any harm today. I’ll do anything that is asked of me and hopefully there’ll be an opportunity around the corner.”Paul Collingwood, the England Twenty20 captain, admitted Bell’s form had made life tougher for the selectors. “He’s in fantastic form and has been since he arrived in Australia. That was a very clinical innings,” he said. “He’s staked a claim for the Twenty20 side so we’ll have to gauge things and take it from there.”And the selection dilemmas will stretch beyond the two Twenty20s when the one-day series begins next week. Kevin Pietersen was dropped for England’s last ODI contest against Pakistan but it would seem inconceivable that he won’t return after a solid Ashes campaign which leaves Bell and Jonathan Trott fighting for one spot.”In all forms of our game we have good competition,” Bell said. “That’s what we need. This one-day series will be exactly like the Ashes, we aren’t going to win it with 11 players. We’ve got some guys who’ve had a good run out today so that’s even better for us.”Bell’s innings meant a tough start to his captaincy career for Tim Paine who earlier scored a neat half-century to set up the PM XI’s innings. He could do little to stem the flow of runs as England batted, but that was largely down to poor bowling rather than any particular decisions he made. As Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have found out in recent weeks, leadership is tough without control in the field.”It was just one of those games, an opportunity for me to practice being in charge of a team,” he said. “It’s something I haven’t done before and I’ll sit down and have a think about it, have a chat to some people after this is to come up with a few things that I can improve on and some things that I did well.”Paine is vice-captain of Australia’s Twenty20 team and is confident that the bowlers in that unit will be able to stop the England juggernaut. “Wednesday’s a completely different game, a completely different set of bowlers,” he said. “We’ll probably go in with more plans on how we want to bowl to the opposition.”
