Player Zone: Juan Foyth’s mistakes are a necessary evil for future success

[ad_pod ]

Ball-playing central defenders slice footballing opinion through the core. Even within the parameters of a modern game which typically champions a possession-based, aesthetically appealing and, for some, moral tactical approach, defenders who stubbornly push the ball forward on the turf are often ostracised for their preferred style.

And no, the traditionalist school of thought spearheaded by kick and rush masterminds Sam Allardyce and Tony Pulis is not the only one which refuses to open its doors to the progressive defensive minds of the footballing world.

Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager in Premier League history, sanctioned the sale of Gerard Pique in 2008 after making just five league starts in the season which preceded his departure. Eleven years later, the 32-year-old stands out as the most successful ball-playing defender of his generation.

Pique has won seven La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, one European Championship and one World Cup. He’s also married to Shakira; things have turned out pretty splendidly since he left Old Trafford.

Didier Deschamps, meanwhile, for one reason or another, simply refuses to select Aymeric Laporte, Man City’s first-choice centre-back and a close contender to Virgil Van Dijk for the Premier League’s best defensive enforcer, for the France national side.

Jerome Boateng was discarded by Man City just one year after joining the club, but his talent was recognised, nurtured and perfected at Bayern Munich under a manager in Pep Guardiola who was willing to trust in his technical ability.

I could go on. The point is this: ball-playing defenders require levels of patience which are scarce at every level of the modern game. Patience is seldom afforded to players lacking experience because they are notoriously those who are most prone to mistakes. Mistakes are inevitable; mistakes in the defensive-third often lead to major goal-scoring opportunities; mistakes can represent the fine margins on which games are often decided. So why bother risking it?

But the age-old mantra with perennial relevance to ball-playing defenders claims that it’s only possible to learn through making mistakes. That virtue is one which is not wasted on Mauricio Pochettino.

The long-term project is greater and more manageable than the short-term lust for silverware in the eyes of the Argentine, so it appears from an outsiders perspective, at least.

Blooding young players into the senior squad is a staple of his philosophy. The latest emerging talent to reap the benefits of his endeavour to promote from within is Juan Foyth.

One of the 21-year-old’s first idols in the game was Rio Ferdinand, a player who shifted perceptions with his comfort and bravery in possession of the ball. That idolisation of the former England international was displayed when Foyth swivelled away from danger just a few minutes into his Champions League debut against Borussia Dortmund.

In that fleeting moment which sat somewhere on the tipping point between commendable bravery and downright stupidity, depending on whether you’re an Allardyce or Guardiola of this world, it became abundantly clear that Pochettino has laid the foundations for Toby Alderweireld’s successor.

Some context is needed here. The act in itself was defined by Foyth’s immeasurable belief in his ability, but history would suggest that his confidence should have been crushed before Dortmund stepped out at Wembley.

The inexperienced defender was handed his first start in a north London derby on December 2nd 2018, with Pochettino giving him the nod over Alderweireld. An otherwise accomplished performance was tarnished by a fatal second-half error which allowed Arsenal to re-take the lead on their way to a 4-2 victory.

Alan Shearer led the way in the scathing criticism of Pochettino’s decision to go with youth over experience while speaking on Match of the Day, via Daily Mail.

“If you are Aubameyang and you see that Tottenham team sheet who do you want to play against – Foyth or Alderweireld? There is only one there for me.

“He is their best defender, their leader and their organiser at the back. He pulls everyone together. They were all over the place today. It is a poor mistake.”

Twitter’s myriad of football experts brought their predictably reactive, short-term analysis to the table to spread the feeling of animosity towards Pochettino’s decision.

But it’s best to view Foyth’s performance that day and his various showings throughout the season through a lens which views his mistakes in isolation. Overall, his performances have been excellent for a player of his limited experience, and his errors have merely arrived as a consequence of his desire to abide by the principles which he and his manager hold in common.

Without a manager of Pochettino’s refreshing mindset and unique approach to football management, Foyth would be clearing the ball into touch in pressurised situations and failing to fine-tune the attributes which make him the outstanding talent he is.

Those who are more sympathetic towards this point of view would be well within their rights to draw comparisons between the formative stages of Foyth’s career at Spurs and the difficult opening John Stones endured at Man City.

The media vultures swooped in to destroy the £47.5 million defender following his unconvincing opening to life at the Etihad Stadium. Francis Lee’s claim in 2016 that Stones has the ability to rise into the same class as Bobby Moore would have been met with hysteria back then; now the weight of substance behind it would crush the most vehement criticism.

A similar script could well be in the offing for Foyth thanks to the state-of-mind which Pochettino has installed into the Argentina international. Just as Stones has seamlessly stepped into Vincent Kompany’s shoes at Man City, Alderweireld will pass the proverbial baton to Foyth and silence the nay-sayers who fail to appreciate the bigger picture behind his auspicious development.

Rangers handed Ianis Hagi boost

A promising Rangers injury update has emerged on Gers talent Ianis Hagi with the Ibrox forward progressing well at present.

What’s the latest?

The Rangers midfielder’s dad, Gheorghe Hagi, has opened up on his recovery following the season-ending knee injury the Romanian international suffered in January against Stirling Albion.

Football Scotland quote him as saying that his son is “looking very well” as he continues with his rehabilitation.

Van Bronckhorst buzzing

This update will surely leave Gio van Bronckhorst relieved heading into the summer. Gheorghe’s initial three-word claim suggests that his son has not suffered any setbacks in his recovery and is still on course to be back for the 2022/23 campaign.

At the age of 23, it could be easy for Hagi to get himself down in the dumps about his injury nightmare. Instead, it seems as though he has taken it in his stride and is now working to get himself back in the best possible condition to attack next season with all his might.

Van Bronckhorst will, therefore, be delighted with his attitude. He will also be excited to have the talented playmaker back in his side later this year as he is a proven Premiership performer who can take control of a game on his own at times.

In the league this season, Hagi averaged a superb SofaScore rating of 7.10 – scoring two goals and creating 1.5 chances per game. This shows that he was able to consistently deliver top-class performances as he regularly created openings for his teammates to score from.

He also caught the eye in the 2020/21 title-winning campaign as he produced seven goals and 11 assists in 23 Premiership starts. The mercurial playmaker is a difference-maker at this level and has proven it over the course of two seasons, which is why van Bronckhorst will be buzzing that his recovery is going well.

It is now down to Hagi to continue making progress to ensure that he does not suffer any setbacks before the next season gets underway. He can be an important player for the club domestically and potentially in the Champions League or Europa League next term if he can get back to his best, as shown by his statistics, and this latest update suggests that he is well on his way to doing that.

Newcastle: Mignolet talks to De Ketelaere

Former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has spoken to Newcastle target Charles De Ketelaere following links of a move to St James’ Park.

The Lowdown: Newcastle links

Nicknamed ‘King Charles’, the creative 21-year-old midfielder appears to be on Newcastle’s radar ahead of the summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-4/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Reports have linked the Magpies with a move for the Club Brugge star, suggesting that they were in the picture for a potential €40m (£33.3m) deal at the end of the season.

De Ketelaere has been in fine form in recent months, contributing to 26 goals in 41 games in all competitions in 2021/22, with Pep Guardiola impressed by the Belgian’s display against Manchester City in the Champions League during the autumn.

The Latest: Mignolet’s comments

Sport Witness relayed comments from De Ketelaere in a story on Saturday.

The 6 foot 3 midfielder was told by former Sunderland goalkeeper Mignolet that ‘there’s not much to do in Newcastle’, with the 34-year-old possibly trying to put him off a move to England.

The Verdict: Shrewd target

De Ketelaere appears to be a star of the future and has impressed in the Jupiler Pro League with plenty of goals and assists.

The Magpies will have the funds for a big-money transfer following their takeover, so it could be a realistic deal to pursue, so long as the player isn’t put off by a move to Tyneside after Mignolet’s comments.

Newcastle have just two attacking midfielders on the books at this moment in time, so bringing in a third could be a shrewd move in the long run.

NUFC: MLS interest in outcast

An update has emerged on Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark, regarding interest in his services…

What’s the talk?

According to TEAMtalk, a transfer to the MLS could be on the cards for the Magpies outcast after he was omitted from the 25-man Premier League squad.

The report claims that he turned down a move to Championship side Middlesbrough during the January transfer window.

Time’s up

Eddie Howe must brutally axe Clark from the club as his time at St. James’ Park is up. He must sanction a sale to an MLS side in the coming days and weeks to move on from the Irishman.

He has been a liability throughout this season so far and it was no surprise to see him left out of the Premier League squad for the second half of the campaign. Unfortunately, he is not good enough for this level of football anymore and his performances have reflected that.

In the top-flight this term, he has averaged a dismal SofaScore rating of 6.29. No outfield player for Newcastle has averaged a lower score than that in the division and this suggests that he has been one of the worst players in the side, which is why he should be sold.

Former Toon player Malcolm MacDonald ripped into the defender earlier this season, saying:

“I think Ciaran Clark has been a great pro, not just for Newcastle, but over his career, great pro, at international level as well.

“He’s looking shocking at the moment, he’s looking unbalanced, he’s looking as if he can just be pushed around like a lightweight and he’s not showing the things that have made him an accomplished player.

“He’s not getting the ball, he’s not passing it. And I think ‘what is going on when a good, honest pro like Ciaran Clark is looking like a right duffer?’.”

These comments further highlight how poor the £42k-per-week dud has been this season. He is not good enough for a club looking to avoid relegation, given his statistics this term, and the club were justified in their decision to exclude him from the squad.

Howe must now go one step further and allow him to leave the team on a permanent basis. With Dan Burn coming in on deadline day, Newcastle are not short of options at the back and it seems unlikely that he will be needed in the summer, which is why it could make sense to cash in on him now with MLS clubs keen on landing him.

CPFC: Vieira must unleash Eze vs Chelsea

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira must finally unleash Eberechi Eze, who has lacked game-time this season.

The 23-year-old has failed to win back a starting place in Vieira’s side after sustaining an Achilles tendon injury at the end of last season, which has disrupted his momentum.

Before the injury, Eze had shown plenty of promise, having notched ten goal contributions (four goals and six assists) in his debut campaign in England’s top flight. However, it’s fair to say that 2021/22 has not gone to plan for the 37k-p/w star, who has made just seven appearances in the current Premier League campaign.

On the chalkboard

On Sunday, Crystal Palace make the trip to Wembley to face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals.

If the last four meetings between the teams are any barometer, Vieira’s side will be hard pressed to emerge triumphant, conceding 12 goals across their last four games against the Blues and scoring just one.

They will surely look to change that, and having registered three wins, a draw and a loss in their last five matches, they will look to add to that momentum and strike Chelsea whilst they are down, with the Blues having been eliminated from the Champions League in midweek in agonising fashion.

Eze, who has been described as “magic” by team-mate Christian Benteke, can help Vieira’s side to overcome their London rivals, and he may prove to be their secret weapon in a potential system change for the Eagles.

With the 23-year-old finding the net on 14 occasions throughout the 2019/20 season for QPR, fans may be disappointed with his lack of end product this season, even accounting for his long-term injury layoff.

However, it is worth noting that he has not been deployed in his favoured position under Vieira, and with a slight system change from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 during Palace’s last game against Leicester, Eze may well get his chance in an attacking midfield role – the position in which he was most potent during his time at QPR.

The Eagles boss may well have been testing the system out last weekend in order to iron out potential flaws ahead of the FA Cup semi-final.

Eze will surely be out to register his first attacking return of the season, and what better occasion to do just that than a cup semi-final at Wembley against a London rival?

Brenden Aaronson: Leeds prepare second bid

Leeds United are preparing another offer for top transfer target Brenden Aaronson…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the ever-reliable Phil Hay of The Athletic.

“Leeds United considering upping their bid for Brenden Aaronson to £20m. The club want him in this window, although if RB Salzburg dig their heels in, it’s one which could wait until the summer. Leeds rate him very highly,” he tweeted with an accompanying article.

Earlier this week, the Yorkshire outfit had a £15m bid rejected by the Austrian champions as they remain intent on keeping their star midfielder.

The Yorkshire outfit are said to have sent director of football Victor Orta to Salzburg to try and thrash out a deal, whilst it is believed that they do not want to offload any player this month due to their upcoming Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Keep trying!

Indeed, much of the talk suggests that it’s a losing race as the Austrian outfit simply will not sell one of Matthias Jaissle’s key players. However, history would tell us otherwise.

In the past, the club have cashed in on the likes of Erling Haaland (£18m to Borussia Dortmund), Dominik Szoboszlai (£18m t0 RB Leipzig) and Sadio Mane (£10m to Southampton).

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

That suggests that for the right offer, historically, Salzburg have sold. They are ultimately a selling club as they always have young talents being developed.

Therefore, supporters and even manager Marcelo Bielsa should be encouraged by Hay’s latest report as there’s a chance the Austrians cave in, no matter what other claims are telling us.

Aaronson would be a hugely exciting signing for Leeds, too. He very much fits the profile that the Argentinian head coach desires – hard-working, bundles of energy and very, very versatile.

He has delivered ten goals and 12 assists in 51 appearances for Salzburg, via Transfermarkt, whilst American reporters have likened him to both Yossi Benayoun and Clint Dempsey, who both have had an impact in the Premier League in the past.

It appears as if Leeds aren’t giving up, so those around Elland Road must be buzzing by this latest update.

Leeds: Joe Rodon update emerges

Tottenham are reportedly willing to sell Leeds-linked defender Joe Rodon this summer.

The Lowdown: Leeds interest

Rodon, labelled as ‘flawless’ and ‘special’ in a Wales shirt by journalist Ian Mitchelmore, was linked with a move to Elland Road in the January window.

Victor Orta and co. were keen on his services in a potential loan deal alongside Newcastle, however, the Wales international remained in north London.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Antonio Conte is yet to use the 24-year-old in the Premier League, and it looks as if a Spurs exit will be discussed once again over the coming months given he is so far down the pecking order.

The Latest: Rodon update

TEAMtalk relayed an update from The Telegraph, suggesting that Conte is willing to green-light an exit for the centre-back this summer.

Their report claims that Leeds and Newcastle are once again on alert regarding the Wales centre-back and both could be interested in a summer swoop.

The Verdict: Orta target?

Jesse Marsch currently has five centre-back options, however, he has taken over the league’s leakiest defence and is thought to be planning a defensive overhaul.

Robin Koch has been linked with an exit in recent weeks, so should he depart this summer, a new centre-back would more than likely be on his radar.

Orta clearly wants Rodon at Elland Road given the interest under two different managers, so a move could be one to keep a close eye on, providing Leeds remain in the Premier League.

Liverpool: Fresh Fabio Carvalho talks

Liverpool officials are meeting with their counterparts at Fulham this morning to try to agree a deal for Fabio Carvalho, as per Fabrizio Romano.

The lowdown

Sky Sports’ Vinny O’Connor reported on Sunday that Liverpool had made a £5m bid for the 19-year-old.

Carvalho is into the final six months of his contract at Craven Cottage, but Fulham are keen to keep hold him until the end of the season as they push for promotion. They’re currently leading the Championship, five points clear of Blackburn Rovers with a game in hand.

That could mean that Carvalho remains in London on loan until the end of the season, with Liverpool eager to do a deal now so that the fee isn’t determined by tribunal.

The latest

Romano tweeted on Sunday night that there would be a ‘new meeting in the morning’.

He added that ‘LFC are working’ on an agreement because manager Jurgen ‘Klopp wants him for the future’.

The verdict

Off the back of the signing of Luis Diaz, Carvalho would be another exciting addition for the Reds, albeit one who may take longer to make an impact at the top level.

The England under-19 international has been directly involved in 11 Championship goals (scored seven, set up four) this season despite only starting 15 games, while Fulham manager Marco Silva has hailed him as a player with ‘fantastic’ ability.

If Liverpool make an early breakthrough on Deadline Day, the 19-year-old could follow Harvey Elliott in swapping Craven Cottage for Anfield in his teenage years.

Leeds United must rue letting James Tavernier go

If Leeds United fans were keeping an eye on the academy during the mid 2000s, then seeing James Tavernier’s name on the books may not be too much of a shock to the system reading it now.

The full-back was a part of the club’s youth system from the age of nine after being picked up from local side Farsley Celtic.

The Bradford-born ace would then spend six seasons at Leeds, predominantly playing in a central midfield role, before eventually making the switch to Tyneside to join Newcastle for nothing.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

While Tavernier has since gone to be a star north of the border at Rangers, he admitted that growing up, his biggest Leeds icon was a certain Lucas Radebe.

He revealed: “My idol would be Lucas Radebe. The captain of Leeds, ‘The chief’ as he is known at Leeds. He was a great leader back in the glory days of Leeds and I just remembered him being such a figure at the club.”

But while Radebe may be his inspiration, Tavernier has carved out a real reputation as being one of the most productive full-backs in Europe, boasting an impressive goal record that even puts to shame someone like Trent Alexander-Arnold.

As per Transfermarkt, the Englishman has bagged himself a career total of 86 goals at senior level, with 77 of them coming with the Gers.

What perhaps makes that record all the more impressive in Tavernier’s case, is that he has also stepped up with a whopping 105 assists for the Ibrox side, while it has only come in 335 games – essentially, even as just a full-back, Tavernier averages more than one goal contribution every other game.

It’s been no surprise then that the defender has earned some high praise, including from former Gers boss and current Aston Villa Steven Gerrard who spoke glowingly about his consistency levels.

He said: “When we turned up we knew we had the best right back in the league, and that’s stayed the same. His consistency has been outrageous really. He’s gotten stronger and stronger as the games go on.

“He’s led his team to three European runs in succession, so he deserves a lot of credit. The good thing is he’s available all the time, he puts himself out there, and the numbers for a full-back, no matter what league or what level you’re playing at, are outstanding.”

All in all, the man with a whopping 204 career goal contributions to his name despite predominantly playing at right-back has surely got Leeds wondering what could have been.

Everton eyeing Favre for manager role

With just one win in their past 13 Premier League games and a dismal 2-1 defeat against relegation strugglers Norwich City at the weekend, Rafa Benitez’s time in charge of Everton was brought to an end, leaving the Toffees in 16th place in the league table and on the hunt for a new manager.

In terms of who could come in as the next figure to try and steady the ship, it seems as though Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has one name in mind to come in and replace Benitez and try and get the Toffees’ season back on the rails.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from The Athletic by Everton journalist Patrick Boyland and Greg O’Keeffe, the Merseyside club have identified former Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre as a potential candidate to take the reins at Goodison Park.

During his stint in charge of Dortmund between July 2018 and December 2020, Favre took charge of 110 matches across all competitions, winning 68, drawing 17 and losing 25, which is an impressive record to have.

The 64-year-old has had spells at other German clubs such as Hertha BSC and Borussia Monchengladbach as well as having a period in charge of French club OGC Nice and FC Zurich in his native country of Switzerland, highlighting the experience he has in management.

Even though he hasn’t had a job since leaving Dortmund, this would give Everton the opportunity to get him to Goodison quicker than potentially any other manager they see as a possible candidate for the job that is currently working at another club.

In his own words, Favre has said in the past that his players “have to be ready to suffer in training,” suggesting just how much he expects from them. That could be just what Everton need to get the right attitude and work ethic in the squad that can deliver strong performances and positive results on the pitch.

After all, Benitez clearly didn’t get the most from his players but a stern coach such as Favre appears to fit the bill.

Moving forward, Everton should definitely make an approach to the Swiss boss in the coming days and weeks if they haven’t already to see if he would be willing to test his managerial abilities in the Premier League with a side that need a big change in fortunes before the end of the current campaign.
