Sterling will love him: Chelsea in talks to confirm "incredible" manager

As of right now, the Chelsea board will be working tirelessly to find the perfect replacement for Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine left the club last week after just one season in charge, which is without doubt a bold decision by Todd Boehly that could cause plenty of backlash.

However, one of the positives of bringing in a new coach is that it would provide an opportunity for some of the struggling players to revive themselves.

One of those is Raheem Sterling, who would massively benefit from a new manager, especially one who plays attacking football.

The latest on Chelsea's hunt for a new manager

As per a report from The Athletic, Chelsea are eyeing a move to make Enzo Maresca their next boss.

It’s reported that the Italian has new become one of two options for the club, with Thomas Frank also in contention for the job.

Leicester manager Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea’s appointment strategy is to find the next best promising manager who can lead a rebuild of the club rather than sign a ready-made boss.

Maresca fits that profile down to a tee, and considering he’s just 44 years of age, he’s the definition of the up-and-coming coach that Chelsea are after.

The latest, according to the Guardian's Jason Steinberg, is that talks happened over the weekend.

Some reports even claim that Maresca, or whoever the Blues decide as their next boss could be in place within the next 24-48 hours.

The Chelsea player who could benefit most

Chelsea’s highest-paid player, Sterling, certainly hasn’t justified his colossal £325k-per-week salary since leaving Manchester City in 2022.

Unfortunately, even though Pochettino was able to take his goal tally from six last season to eight this time around, the England international has been unable to nail down a first-team spot.

Chelsea’s number ten started 22 times in the league last campaign, but towards the end of the season, he lost his place in the side to Mykhalo Mudryk.

Yet over the course of the term, Sterling did show glimpses of his former self, and the arrival of former Manchester City coach Maresca could just help him return to his very best.

As you can see, the winger joined the Blues as one of the most consistent goal scorers in the Premier League, who often stepped up when his side needed him most, hitting double figures every season from 2017 to 2022.

His run from the 2017/18 campaign to his final season was absolutely incredible, and a player of that pedigree doesn’t just lose their ability to find the back of the net.

Given that Maresca’s style of play is possession dominant, where off-the-ball movement is imperative to the team’s success, Sterling should feel right at home, as it mirrors the side he thrived in under Pep Guardiola. After all, the Foxes boss was the great manager's number 2 for a period of time.

Furthermore, Leicester’s joint-second-highest scorer in 2023/24 was Stephy Mavididi, who operates on the left wing just like Sterling, highlighting that his system is tailor-made for the 29-year-old.

Leicester winger Stephy Mavididi.

Furthermore, the "incredible" boss, as dubbed by Harry Winks, has transformed plenty of declining players this season at Leicester, including Jamie Vardy, Jannik Vestergaard, and the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, which indicates he could get a similar response from the Englishman.

Overall, it’s quite clear that Sterling still has a huge role to play at Stamford Bridge under the right boss, and you can already picture the forward and Cole Palmer combining to replicate his previous relationship with Kevin De Bruyne.

ECB clarifies player retention plans for postponed Hundred

Teams in the Hundred will be able to retain as many men’s players as they wish for the 2021 competition, as details for next season’s draft were revealed on Thursday. The Hundred, the ECB’s new flagship 100-ball competition, was due to be staged for the first time this summer before the Covid-19 pandemic caused its postponement to 2021. The competition’s regulations had initially allowed teams to retain up to 10 players at a mutually agreed salary band for the second season, but that has been extended to the full squad on account of the delay. In practice, teams are unlikely to retain their entire squads due to a number of factors, including the end of Kolpak status, a lack of clarity over the international calendar, and form over the last 12 months.ALSO READ: Women’s Hundred players given option for contract roll-overThe ECB is due to release a list of centrally-contracted players for 2020-21 – likely to be within the next two weeks – at which point teams will be able to negotiate to retain a player at a mutually-agreed salary. That could be higher or lower than their salary last year, meaning that Dawid Malan (a £40,000 pick by Trent Rockets) could negotiate up after an impressive 12 months, while a player who had struggled for form could agree a deal worth less. As revealed by ESPNcricinfo, all salary bands have been cut by 20% from last year.Teams will have from October through to January in which to negotiate with players and agents, with a mini-draft to follow at some point in early 2021. In that draft, each team will then have a ‘right to match’ option, allowing them to retain players with whom they failed to negotiate a deal, if they have a spot remaining in the draft at the salary band at which another team picks him. Each team will still be able to pick one ‘wildcard’ player, who will be chosen after the T20 Blast season in 2021 and will sign a £24,000 contract for the competition. The early stages of retention will depend on England’s red-ball central contract list, with the competition again set to overlap with a Test series, this time against India, and their Hundred deals falling outside of the main draft system. It is unlikely that many of the 10 players currently with deals will fall off the list, with Jonny Bairstow the main exception, but a handful of players – Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope and Dom Bess – will come under consideration for red-ball contracts.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Players with red-ball central contracts both years will be able to be retained. Ultimately, each team will have at least one, and at most two players with a red-ball central contract, which will be confirmed in October.A spokesman for the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) said: “The PCA was supportive of the process in confirming the retention details for the 2021 Men’s Hundred.”The players were consulted through PCA representatives, including those who were not originally contracted for the 2020 Hundred. The PCA Players’ Committee fed back their approval of the process to the ECB which allows players an element of control and freedom to negotiate for 2021 while offering opportunities for those who impressed during the 2020 Vitality Blast.”There will be several sub-plots regarding retentions, not least questions over the availability of certain players on Kolpak deals. Dane Vilas, for example, was signed by Manchester Originals as a top-price pick in last year’s draft. He hopes to continue playing as a local via a UK ancestral visa next year, but would be less likely to command a top salary if competing for one of three overseas spots. Cameron Delport, signed by Birmingham Phoenix, is in the same position. The process for women’s retentions has already been confirmed, with players given more control in that they are able to choose to roll their contracts over at the same salary if they choose to do so.

Sri Lanka Cricket proposes split quarantine to Bangladesh Cricket Board

Series unlikely to start until mid-October as SLC seeks further clarity from government

BCB believes it is unfair to ask players to spend so long out of action – and in isolation – ahead of a major Test series against Sri Lanka•Associated Press

Sri Lanka Cricket has proposed a split, two-country quarantine for the Bangladesh team in the board’s latest attempt to convince Sri Lanka’s health ministry to allow Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka next month to go ahead.Sri Lanka’s health authorities have so far insisted on a strict 14-day quarantine for all arrivals, which the Bangladesh Cricket Board has refused to agree to. Now, SLC have floated the idea of Bangladesh’s players doing seven days of quarantine in Bangladesh before flying to Sri Lanka and doing seven further days of quarantine in the island.Neither Sri Lanka’s health authorities nor the BCB has agreed to such a plan, however. Ostensibly, maintaining a biosecure bubble while flying internationally also seems a complex and difficult proposition. But SLC is being forced to come up with creative solutions, as its health ministry has so far refused to budge on the 14-day quarantine.”We had a positive meeting with the Covid-19 Task Force yesterday, and everyone was in agreement that we should make this tour happen,” SLC vice-president Ravin Wickramaratne told ESPNcricinfo. “But we have to take what the doctors are saying into account also.”Acting on the health ministry and epidemiologists’ recommendations, Sri Lanka has so far fared better during the pandemic than many other nations. The Covid-19 death toll is at 13 and life has largely returned to normal in the island, save for the closed borders.Bangladesh’s refusal to undergo a 14-day quarantine – in which players would not be allowed to do so much as leave their hotel room – is because the BCB believes it is unfair to ask players to spend so long out of action – and in isolation – ahead of a major Test series. Earlier, SLC had asked the health ministry if the Bangladesh players could train in the second half of the 14-day period with a bubble in place but this was refused.Sri Lanka also does not have major stadiums adjacent to hotels, as England do in Southampton and Manchester. SLC expects to have more clarity from the health ministry in the next few days. In any case, this series is now unlikely to start until at least mid-October.

Worse than Trent & Trippier: England could drop 5/10 star after Serbia

England began their Euro 2024 campaign in a scintillating fashion. Well, for about 13 minutes they did anyway.

After a 1-0 defeat to Iceland during their warm-up for the tournament in Germany, worries had set in about not just the quality of the side but Gareth Southgate's tactics.

The second issue isn't something new, it stems back to the last few tournaments.

However, as the Three Lions defeated Serbia 1-0 in Gelsenkirchen, a sense of anxiety kicked in. For the first quarter of the game, Southgate's side looked like real contenders.

There was delicious fluid movement between the likes of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden in forward areas.

Saka was more regimented to the right-hand side but Foden drifted inside, as we thought he would and Bellingham, well, Jude was simply everywhere.

It was the Real Madrid star and Champions League winner who scored the game's only goal. Who else? He has been the man of the moment all season long in Spain. He was always going to star this summer.

Bellingham won the official Man of the Match award but as nerves started to set in and Serbia grew into the game, England and some of their players were not at their best during a turgid second half display.

A testing night for Trent and Trippier

With Luke Shaw not match ready the role of playing at left-back fell to Kieran Trippier. The Newcastle defender has done it before, notably in England colours, but despite not having an awful game against the Serbs was restricted.

Often such a fluid mover in the final third on the right flank, he wasn't able to have the same impact on the opposite side. That is hardly a surprise given it's not his natural position but Southgate's team suffered as a result.

Trippier didn't play a single key pass or even attempt one cross last night. That's incredibly disappointing. After all, for the Toon last season he created 2.3 key passes per game and supplied 2.5 accurate crosses a match in the Premier League.

It was also a rather indifferent night for Trent Alexander-Arnold. The experiment of playing him in midfield continues and at times it did spark life into England's performance.

As expected, the Liverpool star's passing was delightful but there were a few lapse moments, specifically in the first half when he gifted possession to Aleksandar Mitrovic on the edge of the box who subsequently fired wide.

Alexander-Arnold failed to offer England much control in the second half either and was dragged off on 69 minutes for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

That said, those two were not the most disappointing in England colours. That title goes to Foden.

Serbia 0-1 England: Player ratings from Three Lions' Euro 2024 opener

England began their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia.

ByMatt Dawson Jun 16, 2024 Phil Foden's performance in numbers

Last term, Foden was definitively the best player in the Premier League. He won the division's Player of the Season award after a stunning time of it in Manchester City blue.

The 24-year-old scored 27 times in all competitions, 19 of which came in the top flight. He had to start for England, therefore, you'd be crazy to suggest he shouldn't be in there.

However, questions still remain about where he fits into his national side. It was in a number 10 role where he found much of his success for City last term but with Bellingham in the side, he's not going to get in there.

Foden can play on the left – he scored five goals and registered four assists from that role last term – but it's not quite 13 goals in 15 matches from attacking midfield.

So, can you really blame him for playing poorly when fielded in a position he doesn't prefer? Well, as Cesc Fabregas noted on the BBC after the game, he needs to grab the bull by the horns more.

The Spaniard said: "I think that the second half was a little bit underwhelming. I would say that is the right word. And I think players like Foden, they need to step up. This is the time for them to go into big tournament with their country behind them."

So, what did the numbers say? Well, FFC handed a 5/10 match rating for his efforts last night following a performance where the winger lost possession of the ball ten times, played just one key pass, and didn't have a shot or even attempt a dribble.

Foden was starved of space but he didn't do much to inject quality or life into a limp second-half display. He will no doubt have his moment at this tournament but he will need to improve or risk being dropped from the starting lineup.

The likes of Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze are waiting in the wings, just ready to make an impact at their first major international event.

West Indies women's coach Andre Coley calls on batters to step up against England

Warm-up matches provide optimism for touring party ahead of T20I series

Matt Roller20-Sep-2020West Indies women’s interim head coach Andre Coley has called upon his team’s batters to step up and take responsibility in their T20I series against England. In the T20 World Cup earlier this year, West Indies did well with the ball, with their medium-pacers and spinners proving difficult to hit. But with the bat, Stafanie Taylor was the leading run-scorer despite an underwhelming aggregate of 84 in three innings, and only one player, Shemaine Campbelle, maintained a strike rate above 100 (min. 10 balls faced). In particular, Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin will be expected to contribute more in this series, after returns of 26 and 12 runs respectively in that tournament. On West Indies’ tour to England last summer, no player made a half-century across three ODIs and a T20I – although Matthews made 107* in the T20I series against Ireland, with Taylor and Chedean Nation both hitting fifties.”White-ball cricket, and T20 cricket specifically, is about scoring runs,” Coley said on the eve of the first T20I. “If you watch the history of our cricket, our bowling department has always held its own, done well and been competitive.”[But] we’ll need to post challenging totals and be able to chase them as well. We need to be clear in our roles for each player, and how we want to go about the batting, and we should be okay.”ALSO READ: Both teams to take a knee throughout T20I seriesColey said that he took particular encouragement from the fact that no team was bowled out across the two intra-squad warm-up matches, with standout performances from captain Taylor (71 off 52 balls) and Lee-Ann Kirby (85 off 63 balls) in the first and second games respectively.”It’s very good that in all innings that were played, we batted the full complement of overs,” Coley said. “And there were individual performances as well as partnerships throughout. It was good for everyone to have had some time out in the middle in a competitive environment, which we haven’t had for a while.”We’re very confident, and buoyed by that. From a bowling standpoint, we’re happy that we’ve been hitting our marks. We’re all very capable physically too, and have gone through our fielding exercises and we’re very comfortable [with that].”Monday’s T20I will be the first between two Full-Member women’s teams since the T20 World Cup final in March – although Germany and Austria played a series in mid-August – and Coley said that it reflected well on West Indies that they will have been involved in the first major internationals since Covid-19 struck.”I’m very happy from our standpoint, in terms of West Indies cricket,” he said. “We were able to do it with the men, to restart international men’s cricket, and again we are here restarting women’s cricket. That says a lot for the passion in the West Indies, our commitment to the game and so on, in a world where everyone is trying to cope.”We’re looking forward to that opportunity to be out on the park. The ECB has done well in terms of putting things together in such a way that we have been protected here and have gone through our preparations well. We’re looking forward to help restart women’s cricket internationally – it only augurs well for the game.”

The Ligue 1 title holders are set to face Premier League giants in Champions League competition on Tuesday. Paris Saint-Germain have made the trip to north London without World Cup winner Dembele forming part of their plans.

He has scored four goals this season, and figured in PSG’s latest outing against Rennes, but now finds himself on the outside looking in. Luis Enrique has told reporters when asked about Dembele’s absence: “If someone doesn’t comply or respect the expectations of the team, it means they are not prepared to play. The match is very important and I want all my players to be ready, so as a consequence I have left him [Dembele] out. I want the best for my team and that is my job.

“These circumstances are difficult and you have to take difficult decisions. But I am 100% engaged with my decision, and 100% sure of the decision I have made. It doesn’t mean this is irreversible, but I took the best decision for the team and that is why I signed here, to create a team that has a strong identity and has a lot of character.

“I was also hired to win titles. I cannot guarantee that. But I can guarantee the rest, which is playing with a strong identity. The day I cannot do this I will go home. I have the support of the club’s president and the sporting director. I am here to create a team and in the future that might include Ousmane Dembele, just to be clear.”

Luis Enrique added on reports of clashing with Dembele behind the scenes, leading to the France international being overlooked: “I am very honest and I will be honest, but I am not going to create a soap opera out of this. Journalist says Newcastle could sell “dangerous” £17m-rated starlet

Newcastle United could choose to sell a "dangerous" player in a surprise decision this summer, according to an update from journalist Martijn Krabbendam.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are about to embark on a busy summer in the transfer market, with new signings expected to arrive and current players potentially moving on to new challenges.

Eddie Howe could decide that he needs a new goalkeeper at the end of the season, with Valencia stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili emerging as a possible option to bring in between the sticks. The 23-year-old is a talented young 'keeper, having made 35 starts in La Liga this season.

Valencia goalkeeperGiorgi Mamardashvili.

Sunderland teenager Chris Rigg has also been linked with a summer move to St James' Park, in what would be a controversial signing given the Black Cats' rivalry with Newcastle, and he is seen as a long-term partner for Lewis Miley in the middle of the park.

Defensive additions are also expected over the next few months, and one report has claimed that the Magpies are closing in on the double signing of Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly. The pair are currently at Fulham and Bournemouth respectively and will be out of contract in the summer. Both could bolster the quality and depth within the squad.

Newcastle could sell "dangerous" ace

In terms of sales on Tyneside, a claim about a current Magpies loanee has emerged which could point towards a summer departure.

Speaking on Dick Voormekaar Podcast Extra (via Sport Witness), Krabbendam claimed that Newcastle could look to sell Yankuba Minteh this summer, with the youngster, whom he rated at over €20m (£17.2m), currently enjoying a positive spell on loan at Feyenoord:

“Newcastle United is having a bit of trouble with Financial Fair Play rules, I heard this week. They might consider selling Minteh. Then Feyenoord has no chance. They just can’t afford that. He is worth more than €20m. That’s going to be some work to replace him."

Yankuba Minteh on loan at Feyenoord

Selling Minteh this summer would have to be considered a surprise, considering he is a young player who could yet have a bright future at Newcastle, with his current deal not expiring until 2028.

Former Premier League striker Pierre van Hooijdonk has waxed lyrical over the £4,300-a-week ace in the past, calling him "extremely dangerous", while Arne Slot, who manages him at Feyenoord and is about to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, has said:

"He certainly doesn’t lack self-confidence. His willingness to give everything is enormous. When we see his statistics, it is really impressive. Minteh ran more sprint meters against Ajax in an hour than many players in the two games. He is incredibly fast. And he wants it so badly."

Minteh has shown this season how much potential he has, scoring 10 goals and registering five assists in the Eredivisie, so it would still feel preferable for Newcastle to retain his services moving forward.
