Imagine him & Alvarez: West Ham moving for ‘one of the best in the world’

West Ham are making a very drastic change in playing style, with the appointment of Julen Lopetegui, replacing David Moyes, who had been at the club from 2019-2024, in his second stint as Hammers boss.

Lopetegui is largely known for deploying a more possession-based style of football, whilst Moyes was more driven towards defensive compactness, and hitting teams on the break, to get results by any means necessary.

New West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui

With this change in style, playing personnel will have to be adapted, with recruitment largely underway, to equip Lopetegui with the players needed to play his possession brand of football, ahead of their 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

West Ham transfer news

According to reports from Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenberg, West Ham are monitoring the situation of Mats Hummels. The German defender's contract expired with Borussia Dortmund this summer, as Hummels is currently assessing his options for his next move.

Bologna were said to be interested, but have reportedly withdrawn their interest, and the other possibility being touted is for Hummels to retire from his playing career, but no final decision has been made yet. Previous reports suggest West Ham have actually offered the player a contract.

Hummels made 40 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions last season, scoring four goals, providing one assist, and contributing to 12 clean sheets in his 2,932 minutes played.

Hummels and Alvarez partnership to solidify Hammers

Hummels, once described as "one of the very best in the world" by writer Michael Yokhin, has many attributes that would help West Ham and new boss Lopetegui implement his system, carrying an elite understanding of the game, and composure on the ball.

Dortmund made it all the way to the Champions League final, with Hummels playing a huge part in that, playing all 13 games, and scoring an important goal against PSG in the semi-finals, to double their lead to 2-0 on aggregate.

As you can see from the comparison table below, Hummels blows both Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd out of the water, especially in passing metrics. Attempting double the number of passes of the Moroccan, and nearly triple the amount of Zouma.

He also has the highest pass completion rate, most progressive passes per 90, and the most progressive carries per 90. This shows Hummels' competence playing out from the back, composure on the ball, and willingness to break the lines with his passing ability.

Kurt Zouma for West Ham

These are traits Lopetegui values in his central defenders, and something the Hammers will be trying to add this summer, improving the on-ball qualities of their defenders to suit the style of their new managerial appointment.

Edson Alvarez – who was entrusted to replace Declan Rice last summer – sitting just in front would also add extra legs to protect the defensive line, helping to form a solid and consistent spine down the centre of the pitch.

The Mexican completes 2.91 tackles per 90 minutes, 1.50 interceptions 2.16 blocks, and 2.79 clearances per 90, ranking in the top 12% or higher for all of these metrics among midfielders in the top five European leagues.

Therefore, a pairing of Hummels and Max Kilman, with Alvarez sitting in front, would definitely provide West Ham with a secure foundation, allowing them to implement their new style of play quicker, and get the best out of others.

McCarthy upgrade: Southampton pursuing £20k-p/w sensation to end GK woes

Southampton would have been annoyed, come full-time at St James' Park, that they weren't travelling back down to the South Coast with something to show for their promising Premier League opening day display.

In the end, a costly goalkeeping error from Alex McCarthy – who passed straight to Alexander Isak lackadaisically for Joelinton to then convert – allowed the Magpies to pick up a fortuitous 1-0 win, despite the fact Eddie Howe's men had to play all of the second 45 minutes with ten men.

The stand-in Saints shot-stopper had barely any shots to save otherwise, as Southampton dominated proceedings with 19 shots to Newcastle's meagre three.

He could soon be replaced in the line-up, therefore, with a new addition in-between the sticks, who is more naturally suited to playing out from the back with confidence.

Southampton's search for a goalkeeper

As per journalist Darren Witcoop, Southampton are lining up a swoop of Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Jason Steele, to bolster their options away from McCarthy.

Steele did start Brighton's emphatic 3-0 victory against Everton on the weekend, however, but the Saints will try and win his services regardless, desperate for more numbers in between the sticks with Gavin Bazunu sidelined until 2025 with a serious knock.

Noted as being a "ball-playing" 'keeper by Witcoop, snapping up the 34-year-old would ensure errors like the costly one McCarthy made versus Newcastle are eradicated from the Saints' game moving forward, on top of winning a shot-stopper who has impressed for the Seagulls in terms of keeping the ball out of his net in the elite division before.

How Steele would suit Southampton

On the opening day, Steele impressed those watching on from a Brighton perspective at Goodison Park, far more than those in the away end at Newcastle grimly spectating McCarthy's display.

Coming away from the 3-0 win with a 90% pass accuracy in-tact, the Seagulls 'keeper also had to remain alert when the Toffees ventured forward on occasion, with one save and two punches also registered.

Looking at the above table, Steele is a far more competent ball-playing option than McCarthy, hence why Martin is targeting the former Middlesbrough 'keeper as a replacement, with far more passes attempted per 90 minutes as a braver presence in between the sticks.

Moreover, the £20k-per-week shot-stopper – as per Capology – is more willing to come outside of his penalty area to help orchestrate moves, with 2.59 defensive actions registered outside the penalty area over the last year per game, compared to McCarthy's paltry 0.20.

FBref even makes bold comparisons that Steele's game is similar to that of Manuel Neuer's and Ederson's, with both of those world-class 'keepers renowned for their unerring coolness on the ball.

Not having everything his own way at Brighton during his time at the club, however, Steele would become a surprising starting figure for ex-Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi last campaign, after having to make do with an unsteady place on the periphery for large spells.

Steele also has far more encouraging recent numbers for Brighton, compared to the current Saints number one, with 79 goals shipped from 54 games.

This is contrasted next to McCarthy's alarming 231 goals leaked from 148 contests, with only 38 clean sheets picked up from those starting games for Martin's men.

Southampton'sAlexMcCarthyin action

Described as being "outrageous" for his ability to play under pressure, and pass with swagger, by ex-Watford 'keeper Ben Foster last season, Steele could soon become a hero for the Saints, if he puts in calm displays that help in their aim to stave off relegation.

MLS Rewind: LA Galaxy destroy Minnesota United, Giroud and LAFC Stunned by Seattle Sounders, RBNY claim Hudson River Derby and Atlanta United's magic runs out

GOAL takes a look at action from the MLS Conference semifinals, recapping a thrilling weekend of playoff soccer.

The 2024 MLS Playoffs kicked off with multiple upsets in the opening round and the semifinals continued what has been a dramatic postseason for the league.

After Atlanta United magically defeated Inter Miami in the first round of the playoffs, people thought they might be MLS' team of destiny in 2024. However, their fairytale run ran out in the Conference Semifinals, when Orlando City scraped by them with a 1-0 victory. Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference, the Hudson River Derby took center-stage in the playoffs as the New York Red Bulls were able to respond to two regular season defeats to their heated rivals New York City Football Club with a 2-0 win at Citi Field.

In the Western Conference, the upsets continued as No. 1 seed LAFC were stunned in extra-time by the resilient Seattle Sounders, who were missing two key players in Paul Rothrock and Nouhou Tolo, and lost a third in Yeimar Gomez to injury during the match. It was a heroic performance from Brian Schmetzer's side as they won 2-1. The Galaxy, though, would ensure they have a similar fate as they thumped Minnesota United 6-2. The win cements their current status as favorites for the tournament.

GOAL takes a look at what happened, who shined and what the major storylines were around each game.

The Three P's of Riqui Puig, Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec stunned MNUFC in a 6-2 victory Sunday evening at Dignity Health Sports Park. The trio have been MLS' most dominant front-three all year long, and in the postseason, they've accounted for 10 of their 15 total goals scored through three games.

Against , though, it was Pec who carved them open. The Brazilian scored 27 seconds into the match to hand LA an early lead before adding his second five minutes into the second half. He had a chance for a hat-trick late in the match from the penalty spot, but the 2024 MLS Newcomer of the Year was denied by Canada international Dayne St. Clair in net.

were resilient all evening, but they collapsed late in the second half after being reduced to 10 men, lacking discipline with fouls, and succumbing to the pressure of Puig in the midfield and their blistering attack up front.

The Galaxy have now scored at least four goals in each of their postseason matches so far, putting on an absolute clinic in the final-third across their run through the Western Conference. Greg Vanney's experience on the touchline has them cooking, with the LA boss out-managing two first-year head coaches in Colorado's Chris Armas and Minnesota's Eric Ramsay through the first two rounds as well.

AdvertisementIMGANCinderella's shoe didn't fit

For a team like Atlanta United, coming off the high of defeating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami was difficult. They had to wait nearly two weeks in between matches, and when the time came to shine, their luck ran out.

A 39th-minute goal from Ramiro Enrique gave Orlando a 1-0 victory over the , but the victory didn't end up being the story of the match, rather, it was Atlanta's rotten injury history.

They lost game-three hero against the Jamal Thiare to injury in the first half, and his replacement, Daniel Rios, to injury in the 49th minute. That's on top of losing key defender Brooks Lennon to a season-ending injury earlier in the year, along with role player Edwin Mosquera.

To beat Messi and Miami, Atlanta needed an awful lot of luck – and it came in waves with heroics from Thiare, goalkeeper Brad Guzan and the rest of their XI. But against Orlando, nothing went to plan. After the injuries and with 40 plus minutes to spare, they had no traditional forward, subbing on a left-back in Ronald Hernandez to move around their attack to position people accordingly to push for an equalizing goal. It never came, and MLS' Cinderella story of 2024 had the book shut on them after previously recording one of the biggest upsets in league history.

IMGANRBNY earn respect

In a sold out lower bowl at Citi Field with a crowd of both RBNY and NYCFC fans, it was the Red Bulls who were loudest and proudest as they defeated the 2-0 in their home stadium.

After upsetting reigning champions Columbus in the first round, they dominated their rivals on the heels of a wondergoal from Felipe Carballo and a close-range finish from Dante Vanzeir. It was a complete showing from the Red Bulls in harsh conditions, with cold temperatures and raging wind in Queens taking over during the contest, but they were resilient in refusing to allow the hosts into the match.

Speaking postgame, star midfielder Emil Forsberg requested an "apology" from the rest of the league for doubting their quality and ambitions for the postseason.

"I think a lot of people should apologize to us now. Before coming into this, I was sure all the time. But some weren't.

"When we got that win in Columbus, I think started something in us. To like, okay, we can truly do this," Forsberg continued. "I'm proud of the team, but not just the team, the whole club. Everybody's working for Red Bull and what we want to achieve this year. It was my goal when I came here. So we have a lot of work to do still, but this is a good and fine victory."

Now, RBNY are off to the Conference Finals, seeking their first berth in MLS Cup since 2008. If they succeed, it would mark the first time the team — founded in 1996 as the MetroStars — lifts the trophy.

IMGANLAFC's gamble doesn't pay out

Expected to compete for MLS Cup after earning the top seed in the Western Conference, LAFC crashing out to the Sounders is nothing short but a disaster. Part of their failure to live up to expectations is down to failing to find a way to get star Olivier Giroud firing.

During the regular season and playoffs, the legendary French striker didn't score a single goal in 14 appearances. Manager Steve Cherundolo made a bold decision to start the striker after benching him in the club's previous win against Vancouver. Unfortunately it was more of the same for the

With 2023 Golden Boot winner Denis Bouanga on the wing, France's all-time leading scorer in Olivier Giroud central and Mateusz Bogusz – a Poland international – alongside him, they should have been scoring goal after goal after goal. Instead, their star-studded attacking three managed just three total shots on target, while Giroud himself blanked and was hooked in the 70th minute as a result of his poor attacking performance.

The blame doesn't solely fall on Giroud, though. This is a talented team with U.S. internationals Timothy Tillman and Aaron Long on their roster, as well as ex-France and Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. The expectations of the club were monumental this season.

With Seattle being down two key players in Tolo and Rothrock from the start, and eventually a third due to an injury to Gomez, there was room for them to capitalize and advance. They couldn't break down the defense and made costly mistakes of their own and as a result, they crashed out of the postseason in rather embarrassing fashion. To make matters worse, it was LAFC's first home playoff loss in five years, with their last coming in October, 2019, when they lost to the… yep, you guessed it, Seattle Sounders.

They spent big, brought in elite talent, but in the end, there will be a lot of questions this offseason as to why this team couldn't deliver this season.

Green available to bowl in IPL, manager 'stuff-up' registered him as batter

Do CSK even need Green? And at what cost?

Cameron Green has confirmed that he will be available to bowl in IPL 2026, blaming the fact he is listed as a batter rather than an allrounder in Tuesday’s auction on a “stuff-up” by his manager.Green, 26, has previously played for Mumbai Indians (2023) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2024) but was unavailable for the 2025 season as he recovered from back surgery. He initially made his return to international cricket as a specialist batter in June, but has since been cleared to bowl and been used as an allrounder by Australia in the ongoing Ashes series.Related

Green is widely expected to be the most expensive player at Tuesday’s IPL auction in Abu Dhabi, with some suggestions that he could break the INR 27 crore (AUD 4.5 million approx.) benchmark set by Rishabh Pant at last year’s auction for the highest-ever bid. Kolkata Knight Riders are the favourites to sign him, with the biggest purse available. He has entered with a base price of INR 2 crore (AUD 333,000 approx.) and will be one of the first six players up for auction after registering as a batter. Ipswich Town eyeing move to sign £30k-p/w int’l with same agent as McKenna

Ipswich Town are interested in signing a £30,000-a-week international who has the same agent as manager Kieran McKenna, according to a new report.

Ipswich secured promotion from the Championship last season and have spent heavily so far this summer to put together a squad they feel is ready to compete at the top level.

Ipswich have gone from playing League One football two years ago to now preparing for their Premier League opener against Liverpool. It has been an unbelievable ride for the club, and they will not want it to end, as they plan on not just staying in the top flight for a single season.

McKenna’s side have been extremely busy so far this summer, as the club uses their financial muscle to improve their squad from last season. So far in this transfer window, the Tractor Boys have brought in six new additions, with the arrivals being a mix of players who have played in the Premier League before or players who have impressed in the Championship.

Defender Ben Johnson joined the club on a free transfer after leaving West Ham United, but apart from that, all the other additions Ipswich have made have cost the club money.

One of the club’s standout additions has got to be Omari Hutchinson, who spent last season on loan at the club, scoring 10 goals and recording six assists in 44 league games. The other big capture for Ipswich has got to be defender Jacob Greaves, who joined the club on a five-year deal after being a standout performer for Hull City.

Jacob Greaves in action for Hull City in the Championship.

After joining the club, Greaves spoke about the fact that as soon as he knew Ipswich were keen on him, he wanted to make the move. Greaves said, via BBC Sport: “As soon as I heard about the interest, I was keen to get the move over the line. Now that it's done, I am really happy.

“I've spoken to [Ipswich manager] Kieran [McKenna] several times, and those conversations have made me very excited for the future here. We spoke about tactics, playing style, and life off the pitch, and every time we've spoken, it's been spot on.”

Despite the club already adding Greaves and Johnson to their backline, it now appears as though Ipswich could still be in the market for another defender.

Ipswich Town want to sign Anel Ahmedhodzic

According to TWTD, Ipswich Town are showing an interest in signing Sheffield United defender Anel Ahmedhodzic. The defender has been with the Blades since the summer of 2022 and has gone on to play 73 times for the club, with 31 of those appearances coming in the Premier League last season.

The report states that Ahmedhodzic is on the club’s list of potential new defenders, as the Tractor Boys still look to improve in that area of the pitch before the close of the transfer window.

This may be a deal that could be easily facilitated, more so than another player, as Ahmedhodzic has the same agent as the current Ipswich boss, Kieran McKenna. So that potential news could help the Tractor Boys get the deal over the line.

Ahmedhodzic is one of Sheffield United's biggest earners at the club, as the defender is said to be on a weekly wage of £30,000.

Liverpool working 'feverishly' in bid to keep hold of star trio Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk as ex-Reds chief offers update on contract talks

Liverpool are reportedly working "feverishly" to extend the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool are already navigating a transitional period following the departure of long-serving manager Jürgen Klopp in the summer and Arne Slot being tasked with leading the club into a new era. Now, the looming expiry of the trio’s contracts has sparked widespread concern among fans, with many questioning how Liverpool allowed three of their most pivotal players to enter the final months of their deals without resolutions.

    WHAT EX-CEO PETER MOORE SAID

Former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore, who served during the club’s Champions League triumph in 2019 and Premier League victory in 2020, shed light on the contract situation. Speaking at Soccerex, Moore compared the current uncertainty to past challenges, recalling the departure of Kevin Keegan in the 1970s and how the club rebounded with the signing of Kenny Dalglish.

"I am old enough to remember Kevin Keegan going to Hamburg, thinking the world was collapsing around us," he said. "Who are we going to give the ball to? Then somebody said we have got this guy from Celtic: [Kenny] Dalglish. I don't know what's going to happen. If it's Trent, it's Virgil, it's Mo. It's hard to imagine any of those leaving Liverpool. Ownership, I know is working feverishly to get deals done, whether it is all three, two of the three, one of the three or none of the three.

"I don't know, but you look at those players and what you do like is that they all seem very dedicated right now. There is no – particularly with those three – taking a game off for some reason. Even in Trent's case, they are the senior citizens. You think about what they offer, and come January, in particular in Trent's case, we will see what happens. But I know ownership is talking with their respective agents – I'm sure feverishly."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While fans hold out hope that all three players will extend their contracts, speculation about potential exits persists. Alexander-Arnold, in particular, has been linked with Real Madrid, with Los Blancos reportedly viewing him as a successor to Dani Carvajal. Meanwhile, Salah has suitors in Saudi Arabia who will be eager to bring the Egyptian to the burgeoning Pro League to add more star power.

Journalist: Man City make approach to sign "world-class" £205k-a-week star

Manchester City have made an approach to sign a "world-class" player as a potential replacement for a current Etihad hero, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Man City transfer news

It is going to be fascinating to see who Pep Guardiola manages to bring in during the summer transfer window as he looks to make his squad an even more daunting proposition for rival teams. Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze has been linked with a move to the Etihad, being seen as someone who could provide quality for Erling Haaland from out wide.

Spain and RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dani Olmo has reportedly been in advanced talks with City over a summer move, although the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool are also in the mix to sign the 26-year-old.

Anthony Gordon has also emerged as an option for Guardiola's side despite only joining Newcastle United last summer. The winger enjoyed an eye-catching campaign that culminated in a tally of 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League.

In terms of players who could leave City in the near future, Jack Grealish has been linked with a summer exit following an underwhelming period that ultimately saw him lose his place in England's Euro 2024 squad. That's part of the reason behind the Eze rumours, with the Crystal Palace star possibly seen as an upgrade on the 28-year-old.

Man City make approach for "world-class" ace

Taking to X, Jacobs claimed that Manchester City have made an approach for Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, eyeing him as a possible replacement for Ederson should the Brazilian leave for the Saudi Pro League this summer:

Ideally, Ederson will go nowhere considering what an influential presence he is between the sticks, standing out as arguably one of the leading goalkeepers of his generation.

Should the Brazilian decide that he wants a fresh challenge, though, Donnarumma could stand out as a great option for City, having proven himself as a top-level player for many years, despite still only being 25 years of age. He has been described as "world-class" by commentator Matteo Bonetti, while PSG manager Luis Enrique has said:

"He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He works very well and has adapted to our ideology. He is very intelligent, he gives us a lot of confidence because it is so difficult to score against him."

The Cityzens are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the impressive Euros maestro.

The £205,000-a-week Donnarumma has already won 66 caps for Italy, despite still being a fairly young player, and there is no reason why he can't remain one of the leading 'keepers in world football for the next 10-15 years. Should Ederson move on, he stands out as a leading candidate.
