Khushdil, Tahir, Zia lead Southern Punjab to second straight win

Southern Punjab kept their slender hopes of qualification to the knockouts alive with a second successive win, beating table-toppers Central Punjab by six wickets with an over to spare.Southern Punjab decided to field first after winning the toss, and made early inroads straightaway. Aamer Yamin struck up front to remove Kamran Akmal for a duck, while Naseem Shah dismissed the other opener Mohammad Akhlaq cheaply. Hussain Talat held the innings together with another half-century, his 46-ball 68 the spine of an innings that was falling apart at the other end. Fast bowler Zia-ul-Haq then burst through the lower order, taking four wickets to hobble Central Punjab, who ended up limping to 154.Waqas Maqsood and Faheem Ashraf struck early to give CP hope but saw it dashed by a 92-run fourth wicket partnership that effectively ended any hopes they harboured of getting one over their derby rivals. Tayyab Tahir and Khushdil Shah, each of whom struck half-centuries, shepherded the chase calmly, never really in danger of letting the run rate climb too high. Tahir fell with just three runs needed to win, but by then he had done enough to ensure a Southern Punjab win.

Thigh strain could restrict Mathews' participation in ongoing second Test

The former captain was expected to bowl in this game, but that now appears unlikely

Angelo Mathews’ role in the ongoing second Test against West Indies in Galle could be substantially restricted after he picked up a thigh strain on the second morning. He sustained the injury while running a single in Sri Lanka’s first innings, and ended up having to retire hurt, when on 12, presumably to receive further treatment in the dressing room.Mathews did return to bat after a gap of just under eight overs, during which four Sri Lanka wickets fell. Coming in essentially at No. 10, Mathews completed only one hobbled single, choosing instead to remain in his crease and try to clobber boundaries. He hit two straight sixes and a four in the company of the tail, before becoming the last batter to be dismissed, scoring 29 of Sri Lanka’s 204.When West Indies came out to bat, Mathews did not take the field. He had been expected to bowl in this match, but that now looks unlikely. He will be assessed over the next 24 hours, but given his long-standing problems with hamstring, quad, and calf injuries, it is possible that he will not field, and only bat if required. This is Mathews’ first international series since May. In the first Test, he had hit 3 and 69 not out.

Leeds can ease Gruev blow with loanee who scored a screamer for his country

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke will currently be preparing to face off against Sheffield United at Elland Road in the Championship on Friday night.

The Whites went into the international break off the back of a 2-2 draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and will now be looking to bounce back to winning ways against the Blades.

Farke will still be without his two first-choice central midfielders, however, as Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu are long-term absentees with knee injuries.

It was recently revealed by Bulgaria boss Ilian Iliev that the former is due to be out of action until the March international break, which is a significant blow for Leeds.

Why losing Ilia Gruev is a blow

Being without the former Werder Bremen man until March is a big blow for the Whites because it stretches beyond the January transfer window and leaves them in a difficult position.

If they do not find a free agent who suits what they want, it would be hard to commit to a signing to fill the void in January as it would have to be a player who would know that their game time could then be limited once Gruev returns to fitness in March.

The 24-year-old midfielder made 29 appearances in the Championship last season, completing 92% of his attempted passes and making 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game.

Gruev also completed 90% of his attempted passes and made 3.6 tackles and interceptions per match across eight outings in the league this season before his knee injury.

The player Leeds should recall

Farke could ease the blow of losing Gruev by recalling youngster Darko Gyabi from his loan spell with Plymouth Argyle in the Championship.

Should they have the option to do so, the Whites must bring the England U20 international, who scored a stunning goal for his country against Italy’s U20s last week, back to Elland Road in January.

He took the ball in 30 yards out and dribbled a few yards before unleashing a scorching effort into the back of the net from long range to draw England level, in a game they went on to win 2-1.

Gyabi has also caught the eye with his performances for Wayne Rooney’s side in the Championship this season, and could provide the calmness in possession and combative nature out of possession that Gruev offered.

As you can see in the table above, both players create chances for their teammates whilst being reliable on the ball, albeit the Bulgaria international is not as loose with his passing.

Gyabi, though, appears to offer more of a physical presence in the middle of the park, winning more duels and a higher percentage of his battles each game.

The 20-year-old could, therefore, come in as a dream replacement for Gruev in the second half of the season, as a player who knows the club and has now proven himself in the division, which is why Farke should attempt to recall him.

Ashworth now urgently wants £520,000-a-year defender at Man Utd for Amorim

Manchester United are interested in signing a £520,000-a-year player as the first signing of the Ruben Amorim era, according to a recent report. The Red Devils are expected to announce the appointment of the Portuguese later on Thursday, with him taking charge on the 24th of November, as he remains in charge of Sporting for their next three games.

Dalot says Man Utd ace who struggled for Ten Hag is actually "unbelievable"

ByBrett Worthington Oct 31, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

The 39-year-old is not through the Old Trafford door yet, but he will be pleased to see his new side sail to a 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Amorim has yet to get to grips with the United squad, but he is already potentially looking at where he can improve the team. In a new report, Amorim is said to want to bring Goncalo Inacio, Marcus Edwards and Pedro Goncalves with him to Old Trafford. All three players play for him at Sporting, and they are considered very important in his system.

They are not the only players he is interested in bringing to United, as the Red Devils may now have the edge in the race to sign striker Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish forward has been sensational in Portugal, and while Arsenal are keen on the player, the Red Devils could be in line for his signature due to Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford.

Ashworth urgently wants Wolves star at Old Trafford

According to Give Me Sport, incoming manager Amorim is keen to sign a new left-back and United have identified Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri as the ideal transfer target. The 23-year-old has been at Molineaux since July 2021, when he joined from Angers SCO, and has been impressive for the Midlands side, especially this season.

Ait-Nouri, who Gary O’Neil described as a “great lad” last season, has scored three goals and recorded two assists in nine Premier League games this season, his latest goal coming against Brighton in the 2-2 draw last Saturday.

His performances have now caught the eye of United, as the report states Dan Ashworth and Co “will urgently look to acquire a left-sided wing-back” due to Amorim’s system requirements. The Red Devils’ interest is expected to intensify at the turn of the year, as he will enter the final 18 months of his contract, but Wolves do have the option to extend that by another 12 months.

Liverpool are also keeping an eye on the defender’s situation at Wolves, but given the injury concerns to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia and Amorim’s desire to play a back three/five, United may feel the need to press more seriously. That said, Ait-Nouri, who currently earns £520,000 a year, remains firmly in O’Neil’s plans, meaning it will not be an easy task to get him out of Wolves.

4/10 Everton star was even worse than Calvert-Lewin vs Southampton

Everton’s run of five matches without defeat came to an end on Saturday after a disappointing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton. Russell Martin’s side finally picked up their first three points of the campaign, with the Toffees unable to find the back of the net despite having almost double the number of shots.

Sean Dyche’s men did have a few golden opportunities. Orel Mangala saw a well-struck shot saved by Aaron Ramsdale, and the England international pulled off another excellent stop low to his left to deny Michael Keane. Jack Harrison also should have scored but could not lift his shot into an empty net, and Beto, the hero last weekend against Fulham, struck the crossbar with a close-range header.

It was Adam Armstrong who scored the Saints’ goal. The striker made a darting run across the penalty box and tucked home a lovely first-time finish past Jordan Pickford.

Beto thought he had an equaliser in the 92nd minute, but he mistimed his run and the goal was ruled out for offside, meaning the South Coast outfit took all three points.

There were some disappointing performances from some of Dyche’s side, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling once again at St Mary’s.

Calvert-Lewin’s stats vs. Southampton

England international Calvert-Lewin continued his poor form in front of goal. The Everton number nine has now failed to score in his last six matches, with his most recent strike coming on the 14th of September against Aston Villa.

His performance against Martin’s side was underwhelming, and he never really managed to get into the game. Very few, if any, notable chances fell to the centre-forward, and he struggled to impart himself on the game. Dyche substituted him for Beto in the 62nd minute, who squandered a key chance the Englishman may well have taken.

Indeed, the 27-year-old received a 6/10 rating for his performance from the Liverpool Echo’s Chris Beesley. The Everton reporter explained that Calvert-Lewin had a ‘frustrating afternoon’, but did praise him for the fact he ‘put himself about and linked up well’ with his teammates.

The stats from the game, courtesy of Sofascore, certainly reflect how tough an afternoon it was for the Toffees striker. He had just 16 touches and had one shot, although that was blocked. Despite working hard off the ball, winning two from three ground duels and his sole aerial duel, he needed more service to get into the game.

As disappointing as Calvert-Lewin was against the Saints, there was one player who was arguably more frustrating. That player is left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko.

Mykolenko’s stats vs. Southampton

It has been a frustrating season so far for 25-year-old defender Mykolenko. He has missed a few games due to injury and illness, and Saturday’s performance on the South Coast was certainly disappointing.

Although he worked hard without the ball, the Ukraine international struggled against the Saints attackers, and could arguably have done better for the goal, letting the ball fly past his attempted block. With the ball, the Toffees defender struggled to create any chances despite the license to go forward.

His numbers from the game suggest that it was a tough day at the office for Mykolenko. He was not too bad out of possession, winning four from four ground duels and three out of three tackles. However, he completed just 76% of his passes and lost the ball 12 times.

His showing earned him a 4/10 rating from the aforementioned Beesley who explained that the defender was ‘an accident waiting to happen all day’, criticising the fact that ‘some of his positioning was well off’. It was a damming review of his performance.

Dyche will be hoping Calvert-Lewin, Mykolenko and the rest of his players can turn things around, with a tough assignment away to fellow strugglers West Ham United next up.

Chelsea could also part company with left-back Ben Chilwell, as Maresca deems the Englishman surplus to requirements and ready to sell. The likes of Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi have also been linked with exits recently, but one player who is repeatedly being mentioned as a candidate to leave is 20-year-old ace Carney Chukwuemeka.

AC Milan open talks with Chukwuemeka's agents as he looks to leave Chelsea

AC Milan are believed to be considering a January bid for Chukwuemeka, and journalist Simon Phillips has now provided the latest on his future.

Writing via his Substack, Phillips writes that Milan have opened new talks with Chukwuemeka’s agents ahead of January, with the ex-Aston Villa gem signed for £20 million looking to move away for game time mid-season.

It is claimed Milan are trying to convince Chukwuemeka to make a move to the San Siro in the winter, after he didn’t move there in the last transfer window.

The Englishman – who has a £40 million release clause in his deal as per Phillips, was courted by Milan in the summer, and many around his camp believed that he would actullay end up at Crystal Palace.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

However, Chukwuemeka has since been confined to just one appearance in all competitions after failing to seal a Chelsea exit.

While things haven’t exactly worked out since his move from Villa in 2022 so far, past plaudits indicate exactly why the Rossoneri are so keen.

“The ultimate goal is to populate the under-23 team with 11 outstanding 16, 17 and 18-year-olds, then I will know it’s working,” said chief executive officer Christian Purslow in 2020.

“And that will take years, not months. We need to be higher in recruiting the best eight-year-old, nine-year-old, 10-year-old, 11-year-old, 12-year-old, 14, 16, one a year that makes it and gets a professional contract at 16.

“I want that player. We have one right now, probably the best 16-year-old in England, Carney Chukwuemeka. Absolutely no debate, he’s starting for the Under-23s. That’s what you want with your 16-year-olds.”

Meanwhile, ex-Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard called the £100,000-per-week midfielder a “fantastic” talent during his time in charge at Villa Park.

Ex-Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard.

“The reason we put him on is because we believe in him and we trust him,” Gerrard explained.

“He’s a fantastic talent and there’s still a lot of growth and evolving for him to do. It’s important that we give him that support and we give him the environment to keep evolving in. But you can see his profile, you can see his quality – it didn’t faze him when he came on. I know he’ll think about that chance (he missed against City) all night long because I’ve been there myself.

“We’ve had the two moments in the second half, it’s a fantastic chance for him, but he’ll learn from that and he’ll get better and have more opportunities in the future with that.

“But he’ll score many goals for Aston Villa, he’ll create many goals because he’s that type of talent. I think we showed our trust and our belief in him by calling upon him because it was a big substitution but we believed he would get that opportunity.”

Man Utd battling with Liverpool in pole position to sign Morten Hjulmand

As Manchester United look to add to the midfield rebuild that they started by signing Manuel Ugarte last summer, INEOS are reportedly battling Liverpool to sign one 2025 target.

Man Utd transfer news

Midfield is certainly an area of concern for the Red Devils. Even after welcoming Ugarte in the summer, Erik ten Hag’s side have struggled for control and, therefore, struggled to find results once again. Sitting outside of the Premier League’s top four, questions have already come the way of Ten Hag with the pressure continuing to pile on the Dutchman and INEOS reportedly eyeing options such as former Barcelona boss Xavi.

The midfield legend has been out of a job since leaving Barcelona in the summer, but could yet emerge to become the latest manager tasked with turning things around. Before then, however, the Red Devils could welcome further reinforcements.

According to reports in Spain, INEOS and Man Utd are battling alongside Liverpool in pole position to sign Morten Hjulmand in 2025. The Sporting Club midfielder is now 25 years old and represents a player in his prime who could now step into the Premier League.

ByTom Cunningham Oct 27, 2024

Liverpool, of course, are looking to complete their own midfield after missing out on Martin Zubimendi last summer, but it’s United who will be desperate to deny the Reds this time around.

As the two English giants do battle and are at the forefront of the transfer race, it remains to be seen just how much Sporting will demand for their midfielder given that he holds such an integral role at the heart of their side as Ruben Amorim’s captain.

"Intelligent" Hjulmand could complete Man Utd midfield

In a repeat of their deal to sign Bruno Fernandes, who has starred ever since, Manchester United could lure Hjulmand from Sporting to Old Trafford in an attempt to complete their midfield. Standing next to Ugarte and the aforementioned Fernandes, the Dane may well be the missing piece to what has been a frustrating puzzle for Ten Hag.

Amorim – also a reported candidate to replace Ten Hag at Old Trafford – has been among those to praise Hjulmand at Sporting, previously telling reporters after his side defeated Moreirense: “I really liked his showing. He made a lot of tackles and he was very intelligent. He’s going to improve a lot physically.

“He’s going to increase his goal tally because he appears in the right places a lot, and he even hit the post before scoring. He has great ability with the ball, and that’s his main role at Sporting CP. He’s going to grow a lot.”

Now, the Sporting duo now find themselves linking up at Manchester United in what would be an impressive double deal.
