Fawad Ahmed, Ian Cockbain give Adelaide Strikers playoff sniff with six-wicket win

Laurie Evans top-scored for Perth Scorchers, but his momentum was halted after a Harry Conway yorker landed a painful blow on his toe

Adelaide Strikers started their playoff push without Rashid Khan in impressive fashion after brushing aside a short-handed Perth Scorchers by six wickets at the Adelaide Oval. Veteran legspinner Fawad Ahmed filled the sizeable hole with three wickets to help restrict Scorchers to a lowly 9 for 127 before Strikers knocked off the target with 18 balls to spare.Fifth-placed Strikers moved back inside the playoff frame with 20 points, while Scorchers – who have 38 points – missed out on a chance to lock up top spot. The home team claimed the Jason Gillespie Trophy to cap the BBL’s inaugural First Nations Round, which honoured and celebrated Indigenous culture.Quick Matthew Kelly and opener Cameron Bancroft were late withdrawals for Scorchers after they returned positive PCR results for Covid-19, joining star batter Colin Munro who had also tested positive earlier in the week, while allrounder Ashton Agar didn’t play due to a shoulder injury. As part of the BBL’s rejigged scheduling amid Covid-19 chaos engulfing the tournament, the match started at 10.10am local time in just the second morning match in BBL history.Rashid-less Strikers dominate with the ball
It always loomed as a tough ask for Strikers without their spin ace Rashid Khan, but they started life without him rather brightly. With the Afghanistan spinner headed home, Strikers fortunately had the experienced Fawad to rely on, and he delivered in spades. The 39-year-old claimed the early wicket of Kurtis Patterson before being put under pressure by Ashton Turner and Laurie Evans.Under siege, a rattled Fawad bowled too short but he enjoyed returning in the backend with Turner in the pavilion, thus giving Strikers a firm stranglehold in the 15th over with the wickets of Evans and Jason Behrendorff, who was deceived by a gem of a wrong ‘un.The ageless Peter Siddle, who has had a stellar BBL as stand-in skipper, also starred with the wicket of opener Nick Hobson off his first ball and the important strike of an in-form Aaron Hardie, as Strikers tore through Scorchers’ weakened middle-order. Siddle’s strong leadership has galvanised Strikers, who now have belief after their third win from four matches.Laurie Evans counterattacked along with his captain Ashton Turner•Getty Images

Weakened Scorchers rue sloppy batting
Given the early start time, the players could have been forgiven for going through the motions with Scorchers meandering to 1 for 19 in the four-over powerplay after being sent in.But Turner and Evans then provided a much-needed spark and impressively counterattacked to flip the momentum. Turner, the in-form Scorchers captain, mixed beautiful drives with inventive strokes, including an audacious scoop shot for six off seamer Henry Thornton. But his 15-ball 28 whirlwind ended on the last ball before the drinks break when he holed out in a rash stroke, thus triggering a middle-order collapse. The burden fell on Evans, whose momentum was halted after a Harry Conway yorker hit him in the toe in a painful blow. He departed in the next over as Scorchers fell apart in a disappointing batting display where they rued sluggish strokes, none more so than the momentum-shifting dismissal of Turner.Debutant Cockbain shows maturity
This could have been a potentially tricky chase for Strikers, who have generally struggled with their batting this season. But hard-hitting opener Matt Short once again showed his liking for the four-over powerplay with an assault on Behrendorff in a fearless start for Strikers. But as is his bane, Short was unable to convert an attractive start, falling for 34 off 28 balls. Opener Henry Hunt departed first ball after the drinks break, followed by veteran Jonathan Wells, to leave Strikers at 3 for 91.But debutant Ian Cockbain held firm with a mature knock of 35* from 24 balls in another tonic for Strikers, who claimed consecutive wins for the first time this season.Scorchers’ depth being tested
An ailed Evans could not take his place behind the stumps after injuring the big toe on his left foot. But despite being short-handed, Scorchers still fancied their chances given their prowess at defending low totals. But they never were in the hunt with Behrendorff unusually wayward, and they clearly missed Kelly’s full-length mastery and so too Agar’s miserly left-arm spin. Scorchers used legspinner Peter Hatzoglou early, who looked dangerous during his spell but couldn’t crash through Strikers’ top order.Hardie, who has been emerging nicely as an allrounder, claimed a trio of wickets at the backend but it wasn’t enough for an under-manned Scorchers, who will be sweating on the availability of key players as they attempt to secure pole position for the playoffs.

Jason Holder and Brandon King condemn England to nine-wicket rout

No way back for England after being routed for 103 in first match of post-World Cup era

Andrew Miller22-Jan-2022West Indies 104 for 1 (King 52*) beat England 103 (Holder 4-7) by nine wicketsSomeone at the ECB needs to have an urgent word about that red-ball “reset”… because on this evidence, they’ve only gone and restored the factory settings on their world-beating white-ball side.Barely a week after the Test team lost ten wickets for 56 runs to sign off from the Ashes with a whimper, Eoin Morgan’s T20I men latched onto the theme of decay and futility with their own apology of a performance at Kensington Oval. From a nadir of 49 for 7, England just about cadged a triple-figure total, but their eventual 103 was still their fourth-lowest in the format, and all too easily picked off by an opposition that had themselves been routed for 55 in their most recent meeting, at the T20 World Cup in November.Victory came by nine wickets with 17 balls to spare, with Brandon King’s 47-ball fifty putting the seal on a stunning morale boost for a home team that had been facing its own reckoning after losing an ODI series to Ireland only last week. The hero, not for the first time in matches against England at Bridgetown, was the former Test captain Jason Holder, who slammed a remarkable double-century when West Indies crushed England in the first Test on their 2019 tour, and served early notice this time too with a career-best 4 for 7 in 3.4 overs, including a Powerplay display in which England could scarcely lay a bat on his line and high-kicking length. As the lights kicked in, so did West Indies’ openers. It took until the ninth over for Adil Rashid to break through with a legbreak that ripped past Shai Hope’s outside edge, but by that stage he and King had knocked off 52 runs, exactly half of the requirement. There was no looking back from there.Powerplay power failureThe high point of England’s Powerplay came from the fifth ball of Sheldon Cottrell’s first over. After taking four balls to gauge the pace of a high-kicking surface, Jason Roy galloped down the pitch to slam a half-tracker through midwicket for six, only for Cottrell to respond one ball later by plucking out Roy’s middle stump with a fuller-length inswinger. That set the tone for a startling first six overs, in which a succession of England batters were lined up for the sucker punch – unable to nudge the singles to defer their impending fate, and all too complicit in their own demises as Cottrell and Holder piled in on an impeccable line and length.Tom Banton, preferred to the former Barbados resident Phil Salt at the top of the order, clouted his third ball from Holder through the line for four before nicking his next to Nicholas Pooran at a solitary wide slip, whereupon Moeen Ali made it more wickets than scoring shots by gliding an open-faced drive to backward point, to leave England 10 for 3 after 12 balls.Though Holder missed out on the hat-trick, that score had not progressed by the end of his next over, after back-to-back maidens including a reprieve for Morgan after an erroneous caught-behind. James Vince then clattered 14 runs in the space of five balls, including a top-edged pull for six over fine leg, before following Roy’s lead by making it six and out, and leathering a half-tracker from Cottrell straight to short cover. England were in the soup at 24 for 4.After 33 balls, England finally found their first single of the match – a stat that rather put into context West Indies’ apparent obsession with boundaries over strike rotation. But it wasn’t exactly a moment of triumph, as Morgan edged inches past slip to escape a nine-ball duck.Brandon King drives down the ground•Getty ImagesScrounge a score, any scoreIt would get oh-so-much worse for England before the innings started to get better. After an incredible journey, spanning a nine-hour drive down Australia’s East Coast and 15,000km of flying across the Pacific and North America, what was an extra ten yards to Sam Billings? On 2, he galloped to the pitch of the spinner Akeal Hosein, was beaten by the turn and bounce, and carried on galloping straight back to the pavilion after being comprehensively stumped.England did at least make it to the drinks break without further damage, as Morgan set himself for survival, and Liam Dawson – playing his first England match since 2018 – attempted to find his bearings in a chaotic situation. Suffice to say, he failed. One ball after the resumption, he took off for a non-existent single to cover, slipped as Morgan sent him back, and wasn’t in the frame as Kieron Pollard’s shy rolled in.One over later, his eye seemingly in, Morgan slammed Romario Shepherd up and over extra cover for England’s third six of the innings … only to then become their third six-and-out of the innings too, as Shepherd slipped in a well-pitched offcutter, and Pollard in the covers made no mistake. At least Chris Jordan broke the spell, serving up a canny display of long-handling on his return to his native island. His three sixes in as many overs included a monster off Shepherd that rebounded off the scoreboard, but his quest for a fourth ended in the hands of Cottrell to leave England on a still-sickly 85 for 8. And hard though Rashid tried as he chivvied England into triple figures, even reaching double-figures for the first time in his 13-year T20I career, Holder returned with two in two to strut off his home ground with the stunning figures of 4 for 7.No messing from the outsetEngland needed wickets to have any hope of staying in touch, but that slight hint of desperation played into the hands of West Indies’ openers, Hope and King, who found the singles from the outset that had eluded their opponents, as well as a boundary an over in the first four to pick off a quarter of the requirement almost before England were able to react. At least Dawson slotted into the faultlessly professional standards that England have left on ice for the past three years. He was able to exploit the overspin on offer to twirl straight through his four overs for 12 runs, without conceding a single boundary. The quicks, however, skidded all too comfortably onto the bat, as Pollard had hoped they might after choosing to chase under the lights, and Pooran’s appearance at No.3 did little to encourage England that a Dubai-style collapse was forthcoming. A run-a-ball denouement was all that West Indies needed. No panic, no rush, just a comfortable countdown to a preordained win.

Newcastle now battling Liverpool to sign "complete" star likened to Varane

Seeking alternative options to Marc Guehi, Newcastle United are now reportedly battling Liverpool to sign a La Liga centre-back who has been compared to World Cup winner Raphael Varane.

Newcastle transfer news

The transfer rumour arrives just when things are potentially beginning to look up for Newcastle, who earned their first win in three attempts and Alexander Isak score two goals in as many games to knock Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup in comfortable fashion. The cup victory eases any pressure on Eddie Howe just ahead of Arsenal’s visit in another tough test for the Magpies.

2025 is shaping up to be fairly hectic for Newcastle on the transfer front if recent rumours are anything to go by. Desperate to make up for last summer’s failure, the Magpies have already been linked with moves for the likes of Real Madrid’s Arda Guler who would instantly steal the headlines and help to end any of their current attacking struggles.

He’s one for the future…

Meanwhile, after missing out on Guehi in the summer despite months of chasing his signature, those at St James’ Park have now reportedly identified an alternative solution to their defensive woes.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Newcastle are now battling Liverpool to sign Loic Bade from Sevilla in 2025. The French centre-back reportedly has a release clause of €60m (£50m), but Sevilla are willing to let him leave for considerably less than that in a major boost for a Newcastle side who could be limited by profit and sustainability issues.

Compared to World Cup winner and former Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, that reported price tag is certainly justifiable if Newcastle want to solve their centre-back problem for years to come.

"Elite" Bade should top Newcastle list

Whilst sporting director Paul Mitchell threw all his eggs in one basket to go after Guehi, he quickly saw every one of those come splattering back towards him and should take a different route as a result next summer. That should see Bade take centre stage. The 24-year-old is playing a starring role at Sevilla and looks on course to only improve with such a move away from La Liga.

Potentially cheaper than Guehi, whose price simply rose too high for Newcastle last summer, Bade would prove to be a shrewd investment and one that makes quite the statement ahead of Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Described as “complete” and a player who “will be a world-class defender” by Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig in 2021, Bade could now fulfil that prophecy by swapping Sevilla for Newcastle and taking his place in the Premier League.

Next to Sven Botman, the 24-year-old could finally form a partnership that Howe can rely on every week at St James’ Park as he looks to take Newcastle back into European football.

Tottenham ask about signing Netherlands international in bargain transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have made contact over signing a Netherlands international who could leave for his club at a bargain, with La Liga leaders Barcelona hesitating over a deal and leaving the door open for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Spurs face Roma in Europa League after 4-0 win over Man City

Postecoglou made the perfect start to club football’s resumption last weekend, battering Premier League champions Man City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, and the Australian is now looking to build upon that exceptional result with victory over Serie A giants Roma in North London on Thursday.

Roma are ripe for the picking, having made an underwhelming start to their season with just three wins from a possible 13 in the league, and Claudio Ranieri’s side have lost their last three consecutive Serie A matches.

Spurs will be flying high from their impressive victory at Eastlands, but as we’ve seen so far this term, the Lilywhites can blow very hot and cold.

Postecoglou’s men are finding it difficult to maintain consistent form, with big wins over the likes of Aston Villa, West Ham and City overshadowed by disappointing defeats to struggling Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace.

There are clearly still gaping holes in Tottenham’s squad that need to be addressed, and some reports have claimed that Pedro Porro’s “inconsistent” form has led technical director Johan Lange to look at alternative right-back options.

Tottenham are considering a January move for Tariq Lamptey as one option, with Brighton potentially willing to sell at a cut-price winter fee, rather than let the Ghanaian depart for nothing at the end of this season when his contract expires.

Andy Robertson challenges Tariq Lamptey

The 24-year-old has been sporadically linked with Spurs for quite some time, with Lamptey on Tottenham’s radar all the way back in 2021 (Sky Sports).

“He can play as a wing-back or full-back, he’s a bundle of energy,” said former Spurs right-back Alan Hutton on Lamptey in 2021 (Football Insider).

“I think that’s a move that the fans would be really excited about. He’s an exciting player, and he’s going to get better as he gets more experienced. I think it’s one the fans would like.”

Tottenham make approach to sign Ajax defender Devyne Rensch

The caveat to a potential Lamptey move is his lack of action recently, with the defender playing just 10 Premier League minutes all season.

Looking out of favour at the Amex, an alternative to Lamptey who’s been in excellent form this season, and could also be available at a cut-price January fee or nothing next summer, is Ajax full-back Devyne Rensch.

Ajax defenderDevyne Rensch.

The Netherlands international has started nine Eredivisie games for them and has been Ajax’s third best-performing player by average match rating, according to WhoScored.

Spanish newspaper Sport, via Sport Witness, claim Tottenham have asked about signing Rensch, alongside title contenders Liverpool. He’s also on Barcelona’s radar, but the European heavyweights are hesitating, and haven’t decided whether they’re going to press ahead with a move for the 21-year-old.

This could be a golden opportunity for Daniel Levy to sign a very astute back-up for Porro, or even a replacement for the Spaniard, as he continues to be linked with a high-profile move to Real Madrid.

No Dyche & Lindstrom axed for £15m ace: Everton’s dream XI after January

Everton have a long way ahead before they reach the position that they deserve to occupy in English (and possibly European?) football, but the agreed deal for The Friedkin Group to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake in the club does hint at exciting change.

Hopefully, things will be moving forward by Christmas. Sean Dyche’s side are toiling in the Premier League this season and look set to be scrapping for survival once again.

An impactful winter transfer window could change that. The 16th-placed side have a balanced crop, but some more quality and experience would be ideal. Ideal, however, football is not.

That said, there’s a chance that the Toffees could be in business this January, with three areas identified for improvements.

1 GK – Jordan Pickford

Somehow still criminally underrated, Jordan Pickford may remain at Everton for the rest of his career. His blood runs blue. He’s been let down by some dismal defending this term but finished second in the Premier League’s clean sheet charts last year, and third for shot-to-save percentage.

England’s No. 1 will be sure to be emboldened by some purposeful movements in the market.

2 RB – Kieran Trippier

Kieran Trippier

Seamus Coleman, Ashley Young and Nathan Patterson all operate at right-back, but the first two have a combined age of 75 and the latter practically lives in the infirmary.

Kieran Trippier’s no spring chicken himself, but he’s still one of the Premier League’s most exciting playmakers, ranking among the top 8% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists and the top 5% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

He was courted in the summer and is an outcast at Newcastle United. It could be the creative injection that Everton need.

3 CB – Jarrad Branthwaite

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Jarrad Branthwaite will remain at Everton – until the end of the season, at least. The monstrous centre-back was incredible last year but has suffered with injuries across the past several months.

Rejecting Manchester United’s advances could prove the difference in the months of football to come. Let’s see.

4 CB – James Tarkowski

Everton signed James Tarkowski on a free transfer after Burnley were relegated in 2022, and he has started every single Premier League fixture since.

5 LB – Vitalii Mykolenko

Vitalii Mykolenko’s grip on the left-back position at Everton isn’t made of iron, but he’ll continue to star as the club’s first choice this season.

6 CM – Abdoulaye Doucoure

Abdoulaye Doucoure

Timeless. Abdoulaye Doucoure will continue to strut his stuff for Everton for the rest of the campaign, and hopefully beyond. He’s experienced, combative and creative all. He also bears a knack for an important goal that cannot be understated.

7 CM – Bryan Cristante

The Friedkin Group already own AS Roma in Italy, and thus the rumour mill has suggested, through Italian reports, that a swap deal concerning Everton’s Beto and centre-midfielder Bryan Cristante could be engineered. He’s a cultured midfielder whose arrival could spark a bit more possession and fluency.

Interestingly, Cristante’s tactical profile puts him as Martin Zubimendi’s most statistically comparable player, as per FBref.

8 RW – Ernest Nuamah

At the backend of the summer transfer window, it was reported that Everton had agreed personal terms with Lyon’s Ernest Nuamah.

Lyon signed Nuamah for €28.5m (£24m) this year but financial woes could force them to let him go. A £15m figure has been mooted, and it could prove to be a shrewd deal indeed, replacing the on-loan Merseysider Jesper Lindstrom.

An electric winger with “outrageous” qualities, as talent scout Jacek Kulig has said, the 21-year-old has what it takes to become a Premier League superstar. Lindstrom, meanwhile, should be sent packing after failing to score or assist in 2024/25 thus far.

9 AM – Dwight McNeil

Dwight McNeil for Everton

Dwight McNeil has been superb this season, posting three goals and three assists across ten Premier League outings and averaging 2.7 key passes per game.

He’s the club’s attacking lifeblood right now and could take his already improved skills to another level entirely with a couple of meaningful tweaks.

10 LW – Iliman Ndiaye

Everton's Iliman Ndiaye

A maverick. Iliman Ndiaye is perhaps the most exciting player at Goodison Park since Richarlison. The Senegalese’s tricks and skills have made for entertaining viewing, and he still has so much more to give.

Maresca may have unearthed Chelsea’s own Saka in "superstar" teen

Chelsea may have spent a vast fortune since Todd Boehly took control of the club in September 2022, but they must not lose sight of the wonderful young talent that is coming through the academy.

The Stamford Bridge side have produced plenty of amazing players from their academy throughout the years, proving that the chequebook doesn’t need to be flashed during every single transfer window.

Chelsea’s most successful recent academy graduates

During the summer transfer window, the Blues sold Conor Gallagher to Atlético Madrid for a fee in the region of £34m.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

The year before, Mason Mount, who had just a year left on his contract at the club, joined Manchester United for £60m. This is close to £100m profit made on two players who made their way through the youth academy before making an impression in the first team.

Reece James is another player who has shone for the Blues, going on to make over 150 appearances for the club since making his debut.

Reece James for Chelsea.

These three players alone prove that the Chelsea academy is a popular breeding ground for talent and there is no doubt that Maresca has plenty of teenagers to work with in the future.

Indeed, one has proved capable of making the step up to first team level as Tyrique George started Chelsea’s tie against Noah in the Europa Conference League in midweek.

Tyrique George could be Chelsea's own Saka

The winger was given the opportunity to showcase his skills from the starting XI in Europe, and he certainly looks like the real deal.

The Blues may have secured an easy 8-0 win against their opponents, but more importantly, it was giving chances to the likes of George which would make Maresca happy in the long term.

Starting on the right wing, the teenager exuded talents similar to Bukayo Saka as he terrorised the opposition defence throughout the clash. Not only does he have an eye for a killer pass, making four key passes, but the winger also created two big chances, attempted a dribble and delivered two crosses during his spell on the pitch.

It was a performance of maturity from the youthful attacker which could convince Maresca to use him in the next European tie, that’s for sure.

Dubbed a “superstar in the making” by a prominent content creator, George has all the required attributes to be a success at Chelsea.

Saka came through the Hale End academy at Arsenal to become one of the most feared wingers in the world, scoring 62 goals and grabbing 60 assists across 240 games for the Gunners.

Tyrique George

If George is given more chances in the first team between now and the end of the season, there is no reason why he cannot become Chelsea’s own version of Saka.

Maresca seems to trust him and time will tell with regard to how good he can become.

Man Utd blasted for not signing ‘guarantee’ Harry Kane as club legend tells ‘struggling’ Rasmus Hojlund they ‘can’t afford to wait’ for him and must sign new striker in summer transfer window

Manchester United’s transfer strategy has been questioned, with the Red Devils told they should have signed “guarantee” of goals Harry Kane.

England captain Kane saw a big-money move to Old Trafford speculated on across several windows during his time at Tottenham. No deal was ever done, with Spurs reluctant to do business again with a Premier League rival.

United, as a result, were forced to explore other avenues. They invested £72 million ($92m) in Rasmus Hojlund when luring him away from Atalanta in 2023, but have seen the 22-year-old Dane register just 23 goals through 78 appearances – with only 12 of those efforts coming in the English top-flight.

DID YOU KNOW?

Joshua Zirkzee is another forward that has failed to deliver on expectations, with five goals recorded on the back of a £36.5m ($47m) transfer, and United continue to count the cost of not pushing harder for Kane – who has maintained a stunning strike rate since linking up with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

Former Red Devils defender Gary Pallister, speaking in association with , told GOAL when asked what the recruitment priority for United needs to be in the summer of 2025: “A centre-forward! [Ruben] Amorim has said that himself.

“We need a centre-forward. I don’t think Zirkzee is a centre-forward, he likes to play in the 10 and a bit deeper. I don’t think he can lead the line. Rasmus, you can’t fault him for his effort – he puts a shift in, runs into channels. He’s finding it hard. He needs a bit more guile to his game.

“We can’t afford to wait to see if Rasmus is going to be the real deal. It’s a struggle for him at the moment and we need somebody that can come in and is a proven goalscorer. Who that is, I’m not quite sure. There has been talk of the guy at Sporting [Viktor Gyokeres], the guy at Napoli [Victor Osimhen].

“I think they definitely missed a trick not signing Harry Kane a season-and-a-half ago. We knew he was a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and with what they have been wasting of late, he would have been an absolute guarantee of scoring goals.”

Tottenham scouting Southampton winger Tyler Dibling

According to former chief scout Mick Brown, who worked at Spurs and Man United, the north Londoners are one of many Premier League sides taking a real interest in Southampton winger Tyler Dibling.

Football Insider, sharing Brown’s comments, write that Tottenham are among the sides interested in Dibling ahead of a potential move for the Englishman, called the “next” Grealish, who’s played in all 12 of Southampton’s league matches this season – starting seven of them.

He’s attracting a lot of interest,” he told Football Insider.

“Nearly every club in the Premier League have been keeping an eye on his performances this season because he’s a very talented young player.

“They’re assessing just how good they think he is, and many of them have had scouts watching him. After that game against Liverpool, I’m told they like what they see.

“If Southampton go down, chances are they’ll have to sell some players. The way the financial rules are at the moment, relegation can be very costly. I think we saw that with Leeds and Leicester last year. With Dibling attracting interest, he may well be one they look to cash in on if a good offer arrives. Don’t get me wrong, they’ll be keen to keep him at the club, he’s a product of their academy and a very good one at that.

“But with interest building, relegation from the Premier League might force them to sell.”

The teenage sensation at St. Mary’s is fast-growing a reputation for himself, with teammate Yuki Sugawara calling him a “top” player and former Saints coach David Horseman tipping him to be the “next big thing” out of Southampton.

“Tyler could be a top Premier League player, under the current manager and his style he could be a star of the future for sure,” said Horseman (via The Sun).

“He could go all the way, he looks like he’s loving life and he’s found his perfect fit. He looks like he could be the next big thing out of Southampton.”
