Shai Hope evokes 2017 memories as Yorkshire push for defendable lead

Serene innings has shades of Headingley Test win, as high-scoring match heads for end-game

David Hopps08-Apr-2023 Yorkshire 517 and 220 for 4 (Hope 83*, Hill 57*, Wharton 52) lead Leicestershire 415 (Handscomb 112, Rehan 85, Milnes 3-72, Thompson 3-86) by 322 runsYorkshire’s coach, Ottis Gibson, expressed the wish on the eve of the season for a new groundstaff to bring more life to Headingley’s surfaces as they seek to return to Division One at the first attempt, but there have been no signs of an instant cure against Leicestershire as a docile surface has left batters in the ascendancy and bowlers having to labour for their rewards. For all that, this match enters the final day with a positive result still possible. Yorkshire lead by 322 with six wickets remaining and must time an awkward declaration on the final morning, earplugs in to ignore the cries from the outer of “declare”. They will surely need around 370 to feel entirely safe and their inability to bowl sides out last season – Gloucestershire at Bristol was their only victory – will be foremost in their minds. A forecast of a cloudy day might help to steel their minds.Yorkshire have bowled solidly, without much penetration, but for all that, quick bowlers on both sides must be looking askance on the speed-gun figures displayed on the county’s live stream. They appear to be a good 4 mph lower than those seen on TV, and whilst it is tempting to wonder mischievously whether TV companies like to ramp them up a little (surely not), the truth appears to be the opposite. Run-of-the-mill club cricketers who might routinely practice against bowling machines set at 68/70mph might like to imagine that the likes of Ben Coad bowl at the same speed, but he would happily offer a net session to prove that he does not. That the match is not dead owes much to the positive intent of both sides, but particularly Yorkshire, who scored at more than five runs an over in the first innings, and almost that second time around despite the potential inhibitions caused by the loss of three wickets to the new ball after establishing a first-innings lead of 102. Those prematurely shouting “declare” tonight would be just as likely to shout “rubbish, Yorkshire” tomorrow if things take a turn for the worst.Naturally, there has been much personal satisfaction to be had for batters on both sides. Peter Handscomb, who was overlooked this week, when Australia announced their annual contracts – Cameron Bancroft was another omission – will have found meaning in making 112 from 201 balls in his first time out.International selectors do not often turn first to Leicestershire’s scores – and Gloucestershire’s Marcus Harris, who did win a contract, also struck a century and does seem to be ahead of him as an Ashes possibility this summer. But Handscomb fared better than some of his colleagues on Australia’s recent tour of India and an innings of impressive certainty suggested he is not about to lose hope yet. He has six games with Leicestershire to push his claims and called the Headingley pitch “a lovely surprise” which is probably the nicest thing anybody had said about Yorkshire for a while. For Yorkshire, as well as Finlay Bean’s maiden Championship hundred and the continued dominance of Dawid Malan on this ground (although he failed in the second innings), there was also a maiden Championship fifty for James Wharton and arguably the most serene innings of all, Shai Hope’s blissful unbeaten 83 only a couple of days after arriving in England on a short-term deal.Hope’s equanimity brought back memories of his two hundreds in a match on this ground in 2017, the first time it had ever been achieved at Headingley, and which put him in an illustrious band to have achieved the feat. At Headingley, they will observe a Test average of 25 in 38 Tests – with those two hundreds looking increasingly lonesome – and wonder quite how it has remained half the size of his impressive returns in ODIs.Responsibility for tweaking the nature of Headingley’s pitches rests primarily with Richard Robinson, who has the former head grounds manager, Andy Fogarty, as a consultant. Fogarty stood down because he no longer wanted to work full-time – and it is not known if anyone dared to suggest that the easiest way to achieve that was a succession of three-day finishes. With diversity much on people’s minds at Yorkshire, it is also worth reflecting that Jasmine Nicholls, a former international race-walker, has become only the second woman to work on the groundstaff on an English international ground. Meg Ley, who hails from New Zealand farming stock, became the first at Bristol last season.Yorkshire’s serious commitment to changing the culture of the county has also been seen in a female hide of media/comms and the election of the first female president, Jane Powell, a former captain and head coach of England women. These are all positive balancing moments in Yorkshire’s history and, with Championship crowds undoubtedly thinned out this season, with some former members taking a view on the racist ructions that have beset the county, Yorkshire will be desperate for a new wave of supporters to show commitment to a new era once the T20 Blast comes around. With Leicestershire still more than 300 adrift at the start of the third day, half the side dismissed and Matt Salisbury only fit enough to bat with a runner, Yorkshire must have hoped for a quick kill. But Handscomb and Rehan Ahmed resisted in a sixth-wicket stand of 141 in 34 overs. What alarms there were came from run-out opportunities with Dom Bess and Wharton both missing shies at the stumps, Wharton’s opportunity coming as Handscomb dashed a single to mid-off to secure his hundred. Yorkshire’s slip catching remains as fallible as ever with both George Hill and Bean fumbling inviting opportunities. It was the first over after lunch when Rehan succumbed for 85, Jordan Thompson managing to get one off the straight for Hill to hold on at first slip. Handscomb was lbw to one from Coad that shaded back, but the last two wickets weighed in with 83 as Chris Wright hit about him for an unbeaten 66 from 82 balls. Bess has worked with Australia’s Nathan Lyon over the winter, but Wright hit him for three sixes over long-off and he finished with 0 for 69 in 11 overs. Never trust an Aussie in an Ashes year.

Earns more than Foden & Rodri: Pep must brutally offload Man City talent

No one could’ve foreseen the struggles Manchester City have endured this campaign, especially coming into the season looking to claim their fifth successive Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola’s side have lost nine times in their 28 outings – an unthinkable tally – especially given their previous success during the last few years of his reign.

The FA Cup remains the only trophy they can win in 2024/25 after being knocked out of all other competitions – highlighting how dismal the campaign has been for the Citizens.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola andMatheusNunesreact

A rebuild is desperately needed in the summer, continuing from the work in January, with new signings needed to push the side back towards the summit of the division.

Key players have also failed to deliver at crucial stages of the season, with two players needing to be on top form if they are to right the wrongs of this season.

Rodri & Phil Foden’s stats for City in 2024/25

Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has been ruled out of action since the end of September with an ACL injury, with his presence greatly missed at the heart of the side.

The Spaniard looks set to return for the start of next season, hopefully able to reach the levels he achieved before his setback, allowing the side to compete for titles once again.

As for midfielder Phil Foden, he’s struggled to match his displays from the last campaign, which saw him claim the PFA Player of the Year award, showcasing the levels he produced.

However, this time around, he’s been largely inconsistent, unable to match his previous form, only registering seven goals and two assists in his 23 league outings.

Both players will certainly remain pivotal to any revival that takes place in 2025/26, but the same can’t be said for one player who needs to offload during the summer window.

The City player who earns more than Foden & Rodri

Over the years, City have made some stellar signings, helping them reach the heights they’ve previously hit, with Erling Haaland undoubtedly one of the best additions in their history.

The Norwegian striker has notched a staggering 118 goals in 136 appearances, worth every penny of the fee they forked out to land the talisman back in the summer of 2022.

However, midfielder İlkay Gündoğan was a player who was part of a fairytale reunion in the summer, rejoining the club after leaving for Barcelona just 12 months prior.

The German was a fan-favourite during his first spell, scoring twice on the final day against Aston Villa in 2021/22, securing another league title for Guardiola and the Citizens.

It’s safe to say his second spell hasn’t been as successful, as he has struggled to nail down a regular place and has been looking past his best when called upon over the last couple of months.

The now 34-year-old has only started 16 times to date, with his showing against Real Madrid in the Champions League evidence that he’s not at the top level like he once was.

His contract is set to expire in the summer and given his age and lack of positive displays, it would be no surprise to see the club allow him to depart to conduct the next stage of their rebuild.

However, when taking his wages into account, it is a no-brainer to allow him to depart, with Gundogan currently earning a staggering £230k-per-week at the Etihad.

His subsequent earnings are higher than those of Foden and Rodri, with the first-team stars currently earning £225k and £220k-per-week respectively, despite their personal successes in recent times.

It would be a brutal call to make, but given the drop-off endured by the club in 2024/25, action needs to be taken in the summer to prevent a similar situation from occurring once again.

Funds are needed to provide the manager with the opportunity to strengthen the squad and complete an overhaul, with the German’s wages going a long way to offer new alternatives elsewhere.

Imagine him & Gyokeres: £48m star is now Berta's top target at Arsenal

The transfer window might still be closed for another two months, but that hasn’t stopped the rumours circulating Arsenal.

Unless they can beat Real Madrid over two legs in the Champions League next month, Mikel Arteta’s side look likely to end the season empty-handed yet again, and a big reason for that is a lack of firepower up top.

Now, injuries have played their part as well, but when the club’s most productive player – Bukayo Saka – is someone who hasn’t kicked a ball since December, you know there is a problem.

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

So, it’s unsurprising to see the team being linked with a whole host of extraordinary strikers at the moment, like Victor Gyokeres, but centre-forwards are not the only players being touted for moves this summer.

Arsenal's search for new attackers

So, while Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, and Alexander Isak all continue to be linked with Arsenal due to their acute need for a prolific number nine, a whole host of wingers have also had their names connected with the club.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For example, Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sané, who will be a free agent in the summer, keeps popping up in connection with the Gunners, as is Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who is already Premier League-proven.

However, when there is one winger who the North Londoners seem to be prioritising above all others and he might just be the most exciting of the lot.

Athletic Bilbao'sNicoWilliamscelebrates scoring their third goal

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Arsenal are determined to add another wide player to their ranks in the summer, and both Arteta and new Sporting Director, Andrea Berta, have a top target: Nico Williams.

The Spanish international has a €58m release clause in his current contract, which is about £48m, and while that isn’t an egregious sum of money, it would need to be paid upfront, which could complicate matters.

Interestingly, though, the report has revealed that the Gunners could offer Bilbao a higher fee to structure payments more favourably.

It looks like it will be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line this year, but given his immense ability and potential, one well worth fighting for, especially as he could sensational alongside Gyokeres, should Arsenal be able to secure his services as well.

Why Williams would be incredible for Arsenal and Gyokeres

So, let’s say Arsenal are successful in their pursuit of Gyokeres this summer. Why would Williams be an incredible addition to the team, particularly for him?

FC Barcelona's Marc Casado in action with Athletic Bilbao'sNicoWilliams

Well, it comes down to two things, the first of which is his output. For example, in 37 appearances last season, totalling 2729 minutes, the young Spaniard racked up a sensational tally of eight goals and 16 assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.54 games or every 113.70 minutes.

This season, he’s not been quite as devastating but has nonetheless maintained an impressive level of output, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists in 38 appearances, totalling 2689 minutes.

This comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.37 games, or 168.06 minutes.

Now, just imagine what the Bilbao ace’s output would look like playing alongside the Swede, who has racked up a tally of 111 goal involvements in 92 games for Sporting CP.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokeres

His already impressive assist record would explode next to a striker that prolific, and in return, the former Coventry City star would almost certainly see his own goal tally continue to impress with such a reliable provider to his left.

The second reason the “world-class” winger, as journalist Zach Lowy has dubbed him, would be such a dream teammate for the 26-year-old is that he occupies defenders so effectively.

Due to being a reliable source of goals and assists, the Pamplona-born star forces opposition defenders to expend time and energy keeping him under wraps, which in turn should free up space for his teammates.

Moreover, with FBref placing him in the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues for successful take-ons per 90, he’s capable of making things happen regardless of how much an opposition player tries to stop him.

Ultimately, Arsenal need some attacking reinforcements this summer, and while it might be a complicated transfer to get over the line, they should be going all out for Williams, especially if they also sign Gyokeres.

Arteta's dream signing: £120m striker now expresses desire to join Arsenal

A “world-class” striker, who is Mikel Arteta’s dream signing, has now expressed his desire to sign for Arsenal this summer, according to a report.

Gunners stepping up striker pursuit

As we start to move closer to the summer transfer window, the Gunners have now stepped up their pursuit of a new striker, having identified a number of big-name targets.

Arteta’s side have now started work on the signing of Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, having requested a formal meeting with the agent of the Sweden international.

Talks have also been opened over a deal for Lille striker Jonathan David, whose availability on a free transfer could make him an attractive option this summer, while the Canadian has also been outscoring fellow target Benjamin Sesko this season.

Another target, who it could prove to be much more difficult to sign, is Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, with the Magpies believed to be holding out for £120m for the striker, who helped lead them to their first major honour in 70 years in the EFL Cup.

However, there has now been a new update on Arsenal’s pursuit of Isak, with a report from Spain revealing the Swedish forward has now expressed his desire to move to the Emirates Stadium this summer.

Sweden's AlexanderIsakin action with Northern Ireland's George Saville

The 25-year-old is keen to advance his career by signing for a club capable of competing for the top honours, and with Arteta looking to bring in a reliable goalscorer, a move to north London could be on the cards.

However, it is expected to be very difficult to prise the striker away from Newcastle, who will hold out for a huge fee, and there may be competition for his signature from Premier League title rivals Liverpool.

"World-class" Isak is Arteta's dream signing

Arteta has been a fan of the Newcastle star for quite some time, having considered him a dream signing for almost a year, and his exceptional goal return this season is only likely to have made the Gunners boss even more determined to sign him.

Reporter Jacque Talbot has lauded the former Real Sociedad man as “world-class”, and his goal record indicates he could be the missing piece of the jigsaw for Arsenal, who are perhaps a top striker away from winning the Premier League title.

The Sweden international is not merely a goalscorer, however, with Gary Neville insisting he is the best all-round striker in the Premier League.

“I think he is. Purely because you watch Erling Haaland a lot and he’s a world-class striker but his general play is nothing like Isak’s at this moment in time.”

It could still be very difficult to pull off a deal for Isak this summer, but it is a positive development that he would be keen on a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Alex Lees, David Bedingham drive Durham into ascendancy

Division Two leaders Durham will seek to turn a lead of 391 runs into a fifth win of the season on the final day of their LV= Insurance County Championship meeting with Leicestershire after opener Alex Lees posted his second hundred of the match.Lees, who made 101 in the first innings, was stranded on 99 when bad light threatened to end play earlier, but after stewing in the dressing room for almost three quarters of an hour was able to celebrate shortly after the resumption. The left-hander, scoring tons in each innings for the first time in his first-class career, finished on 138 not out with David Bedingham unbeaten on 112, the third-wicket pair having added 212 so far as Durham closed on 296 for two.Earlier, Leicestershire posted their second highest total of the season but were still 95 behind on first innings, despite Colin Ackermann’s fine 146, Ben Raine taking four for 114 and on-loan leg spinner Matt Parkinson three for 115 as the home side were bowled out for 422.Durham skipper Scott Borthwick will look to declare early, bearing in mind it took his bowlers almost 110 overs to take 10 first-innings wickets on a pitch still holding together, and with the seemingly batter-friendly Kookaburra ball.Durham were able to replace 19-year-old Stanley McAlindon with Matty Potts following the latter’s release by England. Leicestershire’s young leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who had been named as a potential substitute in this match, remained with Ben Stokes’s squad. The addition of Potts, who took 13 wickets in the corresponding fixture last season, added to the challenge facing Leicestershire on the third morning in cool, overcast conditions after resuming on 335 for four.Nonetheless, while they avoided the follow-on and picked up a couple more batting points, they would have been disappointed to lose their last six wickets for 77.In the event, Potts too often dropped short to no great effect in his opening six-over burst, while Raine demonstrated the virtue of bowling at the stumps by dismissing Wiaan Mulder, Tom Scriven and Chris Wright all leg before in two spells, one from each end, lifting his wickets tally to 34 for the season, two more than Potts.Ackermann, with whom Mulder shared a 106-run stand for the fifth wicket, was much harder to dislodge, yet with the sixth 150 of his first-class career just one boundary away a rather weary-looking cut shot at a ball from Matt Parkinson outside off stump saw him caught at gully.Potts returned after lunch, bowled full and straight and nipped out Callum Parkinson and Matt Salisbury in the space of three deliveries of his second over, knocking off stump out of the ground in each case, in so doing grabbing a third bowling point for Durham in the nick of time.As in the first innings, Durham went hard against the new ball and had doubled their lead by the 20th over, although at a cost of a couple of wickets. Michael Jones was well caught in the leg-side deep by Ed Barnes as he pulled the ex-Durham seamer Salisbury. Scott Borthwick pulled Salisbury for six over the shorter boundary but misread a ball from off-spinner Ackermann, who took an almost casual return catch one-handed above his head.Meanwhile, Lees combined muscle and innovation to post 50 from 65 balls before Bedingham launched into Ackermann and then Parkinson with driven sixes. By tea, Durham’s lead was 240, putting them on course to be 400 in front by the close.Bedingham drove Barnes for a couple of boundaries, the first of which took him to 53 from 56 balls, and while thereafter the accumulation of runs was more steady than spectacular, the pair had still extended the lead to 315 when bad light forced a 44-minute interruption. After his tantalising wait on 99, Lees blocked out a maiden from Ackermann before lofting Parkinson over long-on for his 10th four from 158 balls, picking up his first six the over afterwards, although he was dropped on the midwicket boundary in doing so.As the pair sought to score quickly, Bedingham joined him in reaching three figures from 105 balls, having hit eight fours and four sixes, three of them off Parkinson.

Mowbray has unearthed West Brom's new Harvey Barnes in "unbelievable" star

West Bromwich Albion will travel to Norwich City up next in the Championship hopeful of another positive result to ensure their grip on a playoff spot becomes tighter.

The battle for sixth spot could well heat up across some crunch games to follow in the second tier, with Tony Mowbray’s Baggies currently occupying the coveted position, but the EFL’s elite league is known for its many thrilling twists and turns.

If the playoffs are clinched, West Brom will hope their luck is in, having slipped up on their last two appearances in the Championship’s unpredictable lottery.

Amazingly, their playoff misfire during the 2018/19 campaign occurred even with Harvey Barnes in the Baggies camp, who has since become a Premier League star away from the Hawthorns.

Harvey Barnes' impressive rise since leaving West Brom

West Brom has been home to many rising stars over the years on loan, with Romelu Lukaku once lining up for the West Midlands club during the infancy of his playing days.

Barnes has a similar story to the lethal Belgian, with the now Newcastle United winger entertaining Baggies supporters for one short, but sweet season, even if promotion ultimately evaded his loan side.

Harvey Barnes

The 27-year-old attacker fired home an impressive nine strikes from 28 appearances for Albion, alongside also picking up eight assists as his new employers very nearly jumped up to the Premier League.

Whilst West Brom had to make do with staying put in the second tier, Barnes managed to leap up to the top-flight on his own and never looked back, with the Magpies winger now up to a stunning 75 goal contributions in the Premier League from 190 overall outings.

So, who will inspire the Baggies to a play-off place this time around?

West Brom's new version of Barnes

West Brom haven’t exactly been the most free-flowing team to watch this season, with a mammoth 18 draws next to their name reinforcing their ability to grind out a result if needed, on top of the fact they’ve only scored a meagre 48 strikes from 38 games.

But, regardless of this, Tom Fellows has still managed to stand out as a full-throttle option on the left wing, with the homegrown gem subsequently morphing into his side’s next Barnes.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

A dazzling fleet-footed winger, there are plenty of similarities between the two with their ability to drive forward with the ball in a positive fashion catching the eye of the Hawthorns masses.

Looking at the table above, Fellows matches Barnes’ electric output in terms of big chances missed and big chances created, with a whopping 11 assists next to his name actually bettering the 27-year-old’s assist count by five.

Only two goal contributions off matching his counterpart’s overall loan numbers at the Hawthorns, the “unbelievable” talent – as he’s been lauded by Baggies teammate Karlan Grant previously – will hope he also can follow Barnes’ upward trajectory by making it in the top-flight soon, potentially with Mowbray’s men.

Heartbreakingly, much like Barnes, Fellows could also just leave West Brom behind in pursuit of bigger and better things, with Everton reportedly keen admirers of the England U21 international.

The blistering winger’s long-term future in the West Midlands could all rest on whether promotion is sealed or not, therefore, with the 21-year-old perhaps the spark that’s needed to break his club’s playoff hoodoo.

West Brom must rue losing amazing loan star who's now outperforming Fellows

This former West Bromwich Albion loanee has come on leaps and bounds since his days at the Hawthorns.

“I still feel like I’m going to watch the Ashes, I need to remind myself that I’m potentially playing it,” says Phoebe Litchfield. In a way, it’s unfair to a player to say an international career feels inevitable because, however talented, there is a huge amount of work that goes into reaching the highest level. But sometimes, a player who is clearly going to make that step pops up.In mid-2019 a social media clip of Litchfield, the left-handed batter, playing cover drives in the New South Wales nets as a 16-year-old went viral. Later that year she made her WNCL debut for NSW and WBBL debut for Sydney Thunder, in the latter scoring a half-century in her second game.In late 2022, on the T20I tour of India, she made her Australia debut and her first ODI series followed a few months later against Pakistan, in which she made 154 runs for once out.Her caveat of “potentially” playing in the Ashes is understandable for a young player who doesn’t want to jump ahead of selection calls, but it would be a huge surprise if she doesn’t add a Test cap come next week in Nottingham.Related

Healy considers ditching Test match opening role

Lanning ruled out of the Ashes, Healy to lead Australia

Australia 'a little bit rattled' by Lanning's sudden Ashes withdrawal

Mooney locks in Test opening role with warm-up century

Annabel Sutherland century helps Australia to draw with England A

The retirement of Rachael Haynes opened one vacancy and the late withdrawal of Meg Lanning created another at the top of the order. Alongside Alyssa Healy’s desire to move down the order to manage her workload, everything points to Litchfield opening the batting as she did in the warm-up match against England A.”I’m so excited, can’t put it into words,” she tells ESPNcricinfo. “The T20 tour to India and the Pakistan series here were amazing highlights but think there’s an added layer to the Ashes. If the opportunity to open arises, I’ll definitely grab it. It’s probably the best position.”Ask others about Litchfield and there is one word that crops up frequently. “Just fearless, we speak about that in our white-ball cricket, and she embodies that,” Australia’s stand-in captain Healy says. Her technique was honed by working with her father Andrew at home in Orange when she couldn’t travel to Sydney 250km away. “It started when I just picked up a bat and it was probably very backyard cricket, then as I progressed, he told me where my front elbow should go and sort of progressed from there. Wouldn’t say it’s a perfect technique, but people have said it looks alright.”There is no multi-day cricket in the Australian domestic women’s game – there isn’t in England, either – but Litchfield has experienced two-day men’s cricket when she played the local competition in Orange. Although, she adds: “To be fair, our team wasn’t that good, so we didn’t last the full day most times.”Litchfield is something of an outlier in Australian cricket as a specialist batter coming through the game. The dominance of white-ball cricket in the women’s game lends itself to multi-discipline cricketers. If you look at a possible Australian XI on the England tour, it’s potentially only Litchfield from the batting group who does not have a second string, albeit Beth Mooney plays as a specialist batter. Litchfield still keeps wicket as a back-up but has never been pushed into being something she isn’t.”I began as a bowler but bowled off the wrong foot and as soon as I went down to training sessions, they were like you can’t bowl like that because you’ll get an injury,” she says. “So, I stopped bowling early on. I was a keeper, still have that as a secondary skill, but for the time, just want to focus on being the best fielder I can be and obviously, the batting.”While Litchfield’s talent was clear from early on, there has been an evolution in her game over the last 12 months. She is adding power to her T20 cricket, while last season, she averaged 49.87 in the WNCL which included a maiden century. Litchfield may not feature in the T20s of the multi-format Ashes – although Lanning’s absence leaves a hole to fill there, too – but she wants to be as versatile as possible.”Being a full-time cricketer, I can work on my game all the time,” she says, speaking just a few days after completing university exams. “I’ve been in the nets working hard on different shots and just being able to work hard on the craft of batting. There’s a lot to work on both the power game and just mentally. Your cover drive can be good, but out in the middle, a lot can happen and it’s about weathering that.”You can’t look perfect all the time; not that I want to look perfect but leading into one-day cricket and the [Ashes] practice matches, I’ve been working hard on the technique because that’s what gets found out, especially over in England with the swinging ball.”For someone who clearly loves batting, the chance to do it for a whole day in a Test match is an exciting prospect. “I’m so keen,” she says. “Now that I’ve got an added appreciation of batting and really enjoying it, I’m excited at the prospect of batting all day. Whether my mind can do it, we’ll see, but keen to give it a crack.”
