Yates, Barnard maintain Warks winning run despite Kellaway fireworks

Controversial dismissal of Timm van der Gugten leaves Glamorgan short in thrilling chase

Warwickshire openers Rob Yates and Ed Barnard set the platform for their team to maintain their 100% record, though Glamorgan gave them a mighty scare before succumbing to defeat.Teenager Ben Kellaway struck 67 off 41 balls to take the Welsh County within site of victory, when a moment of huge controversy turned the game the way of the visitors in this Metro Bank Cup One Day game. Timm van der Gugten struck the ball towards the midwicket boundary where the catch was well taken by Ethan Brookes, the Glamorgan batter sent on his way despite TV evidence that Brookes just touched the boundary rope before releasing and regathering the ball. When Kellaway was the last man out, caught on the boundary off Barnard, they fell 24 runs short with 17 balls remaining. Half-centuries by Kiran Carlson, Sam Northeast and Billy Root were also in vain.Warwickshire’s imposing score was built on the foundations laid by the opening partnership of Yates and Barnard, which fell just one run short of a record opening partnership for Warwickshire in all List A cricket. Needless to say it was a record opening partnership against Glamorgan, with Barnard the more aggressive of the two early on though Yates caught him up and went past his partner.Their steady progress went up a gear when Glamorgan captain Carlson brought himself on as his first two overs were expensive. Carlson continued to ring the changes in his bowling attack as he searched for a breakthrough, but Barnard and Yates continued their serene progress taking advantage of the short Neath boundaries.Zain-ul-Hassan was the bowler who eventually made the breakthrough when Barnard was caught by van der Gugten for 79 off 88 balls. That sparked a bit of a mini collapse as Michael Burgess went for just 7 and then there was the big wicket of Yates for 102 off 114 balls, all in a three-over period for just seven runs. Will Rhodes was the common denominator as Warwickshire bounced back from that minor setback, but more of the aggression was coming from the other end. Brookes got 38 off 25, Hamza Shaikh 21 off 10, as Warwickshire plundered 129 from the final 14 overs. Rhodes was out just before the close for 44 off 45 balls.Teenager Kellaway continued his promising introduction to List A cricket with 3 for 56 off his seven overs, while Zain and Andy Gorvin both took two wickets.Glamorgan’s innings could not have got off to a much worse start with openers Thomas Bevan and Eddie Byrom both falling early to Oliver Hannon-Dalby as the opening bowler used his height to cause problems. That brought Carlson and Sam Northeast to the crease and their partnership was always likely to be central to Glamorgan’s hopes. Carlson showed his intent from the start, racing to his half-century off just 33 balls. Glamorgan’s hundred came up in the 15th over. When Carlson fell for 61 it came a little out of the blue as Craig Miles got some movement away and keeper Burgess dived to take the low catch.Northeast and Root made steady progress to 181 off 31 overs, but the return of 6ft 8in Hannon-Dalby saw the end of the former aiming over square leg as the extra bounce meant a top edge to fine leg. Root struck an assured 56, but the impetus was provided by Kellaway who launched a series of fours and sixes to put his team ahead of the run rate. He brought up an excellent half-century off 26 balls, with four sixes.Wicketkeeper Alex Horton looked good for a quickfire 14, and it took a world-class catch diving on the boundary by Brookes to dismiss him. Van der Gugten came and went to that controversial dismissal, but there was no doubt about Gorvin being clean bowled to give Hannan-Dalby his fourth wicket.

Tough talking: How Beaumont faced commentating on Sri Lanka's upset of England

Tammy Beaumont hasn’t had the easiest of gigs over the past week. Not only has she spent that time commentating for TV on a format she hasn’t played internationally in over a year-and-a-half, but on a T20I series England lost 2-1 to a Sri Lanka side ranked six places below them.Back in the fold for the ODI series as one of the form batters in the country this summer, she is in prime position to turn things around for the hosts and is backing her side – and herself – to do so.”It’s great to be back,” Beaumont told reporters ahead of Saturday’s first ODI in Durham. “You always feel like you’re missing out a little bit on something when you’re not involved. Obviously I watched the T20 series, I was actually broadcasting during it, and I’m not going to lie, it was tough to broadcast on at times.”Being a current player, you’re desperate to just try and grow the game and show how good the girls are and get to talk about their characters and build up that kind of thing. So having to broadcast about it was difficult at times.”Full credit to Sri Lanka, they came out and played really well in the second and third T20 and thoroughly deserved the series win. They stuck to their strengths, which is obviously their spin-bowling department and exposed something that we know as an England team we need to work on… I’m fully backing the girls and myself included to bounce back really well in this ODI series.”A Test double-century followed by knocks of 47 and 60 in the ODI section of the drawn Ashes series, 118 from 61 balls – the highest score recorded in the Hundred – as well as a half-century for Welsh Fire and an average of 48.20 in the ongoing Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy mean the positives far outweigh the negatives for opener Beaumont, whom England will be relying on after being bowled out for 104 and 116 as Sri Lanka romped to eight- and seven-wicket victories respectively in the last two T20 games.Related

  • Ratnayake: Sri Lanka's win against England 'really huge' for cricket in the country

Sri Lanka’s spinners have posed particular problems for the England batters, prompting head coach Jon Lewis to confirm that he would take a group to a training camp in Mumbai to prepare for the year-end tour of India, next year’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh and the 2025 ODI World Cup in India. And while her experience and professionalism – exemplified by successfully juggling playing and broadcasting careers this year – will go a long way to helping Beaumont pick up where she left off, the task ahead is slightly more nuanced than that.”I always find it difficult being in and out, it’s not easy,” Beaumont said. “The way Jon Lewis has set up the team and how hard he works with the communication and how we function as a group, even just in 10 days you feel like you’re missing out on some evolution of this group. So coming back in, you’re desperate to get up to speed quickly.”Yes, I went back to domestic cricket with the Blaze and had a good game, well, had good fun at Edgbaston in our game there. International cricket’s a whole different ball game. Sometimes it’s quite difficult, but luckily I’ve felt pretty good most of the summer in terms of how I’ve been playing so hopefully it’s not too different and it’s just a case of that mental sharpness that I really need to just switch on to international cricket.”Beaumont’s last match was in victory for the table-topping Blaze over second-placed Central Sparks in the RHFT on Tuesday. She was run out for 24 while team-mate Nat Sciver-Brunt scored an unbeaten 66 ahead of bolstering England for the ODIs against Sri Lanka, having been rested for the T20I leg.Chamari Attapaththu’s side, however, will be full of confidence after becoming the first team besides Australia to defeat England in a bilateral T20I series since New Zealand did it in 2010. It was a triumph Rumesh Ratnayake, Sri Lanka’s head coach, described as “really huge” for the nation.”If I cover up my England badge and if you think for a moment about being a neutral women’s cricket supporter, the fact Sri Lanka are capable of beating England in a T20 series, the fact Pakistan have beaten South Africa, is possibly the best thing for the global women’s game,” Beaumont said.”As much as it hurts to have lost to them and we’ll be reeling, we’ll be desperate to put it right, for the global women’s game, it’s a must. There’s no point in 10 years’ time only England, India and Australia kind of fighting it out at the top three and all the rest of the cricket not being worth it. So yeah, for a moment, if I take my England hat off, it’s absolutely the best thing for the women’s game.”

Rangers backed to hire £6m Ferguson successor who can close gap to Celtic

Rangers will look to hire a title-winning manager whose record is “second to none”, according to a fresh claim from Derek Ferguson.

Rangers hurtling towards momentous manager decision

It is going to be another season without a Scottish Premiership title for the Gers, with Celtic’s dominance over them something that needs to be addressed this summer. Rangers have a massive decision to make when it comes to their next permanent boss, with Barry Ferguson doing a solid job in interim charge to date, keeping his side in the Europa League, as they prepare to take on Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals next week.

Barry Ferguson

There is a strong argument to say that a more proven manager needs to arrive at Ibrox before the start of next season, however, in order to give the Gers the best possible chance of getting their hands on the league title again, slowly returning to being the dominant force of Scottish football.

Plenty of names have been mentioned since the sacking of Philippe Clement, from Steven Gerrard to Kevin Muscat, but it’s another high-profile link dominating plenty of talk around Ibrox.

Benitez backed to be next Rangers manager

Speaking to Ibrox News, Ferguson talked up the idea of Rangers hiring Rafa Benitez as their next manager, saying he would help narrow the gap on Celtic.

“You look at his CV and it shows you he’s won plenty. Barry brings passion and everything Rangers supporters want, but at the end of the day, when you look at a CV, Benitez’s is second to none. You can’t ignore that. I’m like a lot of the supporters in being excited by results under Barry, but when there’s guys of the calibre of Benitez putting their name forward, I’m all for that. I just want Rangers to be back competing with Celtic. Guys of Benitez’s quality will only help with that.”

Rafa Benitez linked with West Ham job

Benitez has to be considered one of the strongest options out there to be Rangers’ next permanent boss, considering what a glittering managerial career he has enjoyed – he is also reportedly keen on taking the job.

The Spaniard won two La Liga titles with Valencia during his time in charge, getting the better of both Real Madrid and Barcelona, and he also famously won the Champions League with Liverpool back in 2005.

Even when Benitez has found himself under pressure at clubs, he has enjoyed success, and he won the Europa League with Chelsea at a time when he was largely unpopular with the fanbase, due to his Reds past.

If Rangers could entice the 64-year-old to Ibrox this summer, it would be a major statement of intent, given the fact that he was once seen as one of Europe’s two most exciting upcoming managers, alongside Jose Mourinho in the early 2000s.

Rangers must sell Ibrox star who was "one of the best talents in Europe"

As Rangers prepare for a massive squad overhaul in the summer, they should sell a star Gerrard once said was “one of the best talents in Europe”.

The £6m-a-year Benitez is a born winner with great tactical nous, and with all due respect to the popular Ferguson, he would be an undoubted upgrade overall.

Jake Ball signs for Somerset

Somerset have signed Jake Ball, the former England seamer, on a two-year contract after his release from Nottinghamshire at the end of the 2023 season.Ball, 32, departed Trent Bridge after a 15-year career in which he took more than 400 wickets for the county, as well as winning caps for England in all three formats.”I’m really looking forward to this new challenge,” he said. “Somerset have got a great bunch of lads, and their ambition was one of the things that really attracted me to the club. I genuinely believe that this group of players have what it takes to challenge for the Championship and build on the success of wining this season’s Vitality Blast.”The support that Somerset get is unrivalled at times. I played against Somerset in the Blast this year and the atmosphere was right up there. The fact that the club is so well supported was another big draw for me. There’s a lot of passion for cricket in the area, and I’m looking forward to having that crowd on my side now.”There’s a good young crop of players and some outstanding experienced professionals. Hopefully, I can add to that. I’ll be looking to help the younger bowlers and hopefully we can be competing for even more trophies in the next few years.”Ball, whose last England appearance came in 2018, will effectively fill the role of senior seamer vacated by Jack Brooks, after the 39-year-old was not offered a new contract.Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket, said: “We are extremely pleased to have signed Jake. He will really complement our outstanding attack, whilst the knowledge and experience that he will bring to the dressing room will be of huge benefit to our aspirational bowlers and their development.”He has a genuine desire to win games of cricket and it was very much apparent during our discussions that there remains a strong fire burning inside him to achieve as much as he can within the game. He is a quality performer who will ensure we have the depth to maintain our ability to be really competitive across all the formats over a demanding season.”

Man City 'much stronger' than Juventus as Igor Tudor promises to go easy on his players after crushing defeat in Club World Cup

Juventus suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat against City in their final Group G match at the Club World Cup. Despite having already secured qualification, the Bianconeri were outclassed by Pep Guardiola's side, with five different scorers – Jeremy Doku, Pierre Kalulu (own goal), Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Savinho – inflicting the misery on the Italians. Teun Koopmeiners and Dusan Vlahovic found the net for Juve but they fell short.

City topped the group with three wins from three, while Juventus settled for second place with six points.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tudor opted to rest several key players, and the decision exposed Juventus' lack of depth against City’s relentless press and possession dominance. The Premier League giants finished with 77 per cent possession and 11 shots on target to Juventus' two. Tudor's side will now play Real Madrid in the round of 16, but they are worried about fatigue and not being ready tactically.

Tudor said after the game that City were clearly better and promised not to overreact. He called the game a learning experience instead of a setback.

  • WHAT IGOR TUDOR SAID?

Asked for his thoughts on the game from his side's perspective, Tudor said to : "Bad, conceding five goals is never nice. Certain things also need to be said about their quality. We had qualified, we wanted to rest someone and they played too well. We suffered, we were unable to steal the ball and not well even when we had it. They pressed in a way that we were unable to get out. To do well we need to be complete, so it can be a different match. That's how it went.

"We paid for everything, we had to be perfect and they spend a lot when they want. They have much stronger players than ours, but without looking for excuses. It takes a lot of conditions put together to do better, but today they weren't there."

Andrew Flintoff makes first appearance since Top Gear crash after joining England back-room staff

“Everybody loves that Fred is going to join us for this series,” says Livingstone

Matt Roller08-Sep-2023Andrew Flintoff has made his first public appearance in nine months after joining England’s backroom staff in an unofficial, unpaid role for their four-match ODI series against New Zealand.Flintoff is recovering from serious injuries sustained while filming for the BBC show in December. He was airlifted to hospital after crashing a car at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome, when he broke ribs and suffered facial and jaw injuries. He is close friends with Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, and has gradually returned to the public eye this summer, attending several days of the Ashes series as a spectator, although on those occasions he sought to shield the extent of his injuries from the cameras.Flintoff arrived in Cardiff overnight and was involved in fielding drills during England’s eight-wicket defeat to New Zealand on Friday. He was also seen wearing an England bucket hat while chatting to fellow coaching staff on the dressing-room balcony.”He’s been starting to do some stuff in cricket,” said Jos Buttler, England’s captain who played alongside Flintoff when he made a comeback for Lancashire in the T20 Blast in 2014. “It’s just great for him to be around.”He’s obviously an England legend and it’s just nice to have him around the group,” Buttler added. “He’s not been brought in with any specific role, just to be around and observe. A few of the lads can pick his brains a little bit and he’s settled in really well.”Flintoff’s involvement is not expected to last beyond the fourth ODI at Lord’s next week and he will not travel to the World Cup in India next month. He has had limited involvement in cricket since leaving the game as a player, beyond occasional work as a broadcaster and commentator.Flintoff’s series-defining contribution to England’s victory in the 2005 Ashes made him an icon for several members of their ODI set-up. Those include Liam Liivngstone, who said it was “incredible” to have Flintoff with the squad: “He’s obviously been one of my heroes growing up,” Livingstone said.Flintoff’s sons Corey (17) and Rocky (14) are both part of Lancashire’s age-group sides and he has visited Emirates Old Trafford several times this summer. “I’ve been around Fred a little bit at Lancashire and he’s around a bit more now with his boys coming through there,” Livingstone said.”When you see someone like Fred around, it’s always good to chat, especially while [the team is] batting: there’s three-and-a-half hours to pick the brains of someone who has been there and done it. He’s probably a national hero, so everybody loves that Fred is going to join us for this series.”Livingstone briefly shared a dressing room with Flintoff in 2014, when he played for Lancashire’s Second XI while preparing to make his comeback in the Blast. “That was pretty cool as a 20-year-old, playing with Andrew Flintoff in a second-team game at Arundel. He’s a great lad to chat with and I’m sure the boys are enjoying having him around.”September 9, 1800 BST – This story was updated with Livingstone’s quotes

Javier Mascherano 'proud' of Lionel Messi & Co despite PSG 'bloodbath' as Inter Miami boss claims MLS side 'accomplished goals' at Club World Cup

Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano hailed his team's performance in their Club World Cup round of 16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain but labelled the first half as a 'bloodbath' as the MLS side went down 4-0 against the European champions. Joao Neves led the way with a brace and Achraf Hakimi was also on target, while Tomas Aviles scored an own goal as Inter Miami were decimated before the interval.

Mascherano praised Messi & CoPSG beat Inter Miami 4-0Miami still accomplished their targetFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite the goal fest for PSG in Atlanta, Mascherano claimed that the David Beckham-owned side accomplished their target for the competition. Inter Miami became the first American club to reach the knockout stage of the Club World Cup after they finished second in Group A behind Palmeiras, with a Lionel Messi-inspired win over Porto the high point of their campaign.

AdvertisementWHAT MASCHERANO SAID

Speaking to reporters, the Argentine manager said: "My take on the tournament is we have accomplished the goals we set for ourselves. It was crystal clear that when we are competing, we would be able to do so to a certain level. It’s right in your face, we see it clearly. We have met the expectations set on us. Regrettably, when they scored a goal so early, it was difficult… it was just too easy the way it was scored. The first half was kind of like a bloodbath, but the second half was a bit slower, and we showed everything we are doing in MLS. I reiterate I am proud of what my team has accomplished. Going forward, we will focus on the future and leverage our entire experience for domestic competitions."

Mascherano added: "PSG are full and fraught with so many tools. You cannot cover the entire field. I wanted to be on the pitch with my players, supporting them. The message at half-time was that we have to live with this.

"It’s difficult when it’s 4-0 and you know you don’t have much chance, you don’t expect to change the result, but it was important to show a good image to people. The players did really well in the second half; they tried to do their best. This is the way we want to play."
