'Strategic leeway!' – Jose Mourinho and Benfica include surprise clause to protect both parties in the 'Special Ones's' two-year contract

Jose Mourinho may have reunited with Benfica, 25 years after resigning from his first senior managerial gig, but the two-year contract the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter and Manchester United boss has signed at the Estadio da Luz is not necessarily all that it may seem. Both he and his new club aren't ready to fully commit to each other just yet.

Mourinho contract includes premature break clause

A report from suggests that while Mourinho has agreed a contract with Benfica that will run until the end of the 2026-27 season, both sides will have the option to end things earlier than that stated date in two years' time. Described as "strategic leeway", it is claimed that either Mourinho or Benfica can choose to break the deal from the end of this campaign instead, within 10 days of the last game the Lisbon giants are scheduled to play.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesNot a long-term commitment

The hybrid contract effectively has the security of two years, but with the flexibility of just one. Either side can see how it goes, before deciding if it is worth committing to the second year, and then potentially longer beyond then. It suggests that both coach and club haven't ruled out things going wrong sooner rather than later, or not quite being the right fit for each other.

Mourinho's diminishing stature

From winning Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Champions League titles in the first 15 years of the 21st century, Mourinho's stature has fallen over the last decade. High level success, albeit still winning a few less prestigious trophies along the way, feels as though it has been increasingly tough to come by through spells with Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma and Fenerbahce, with many of those associations ending on a sour note. At Fenerbahce, he was openly critical of the Turkish football landscape from early on and often appeared unhappy. It might also be a consideration that Mourinho resigned at Benfica once before, after only a few months in charge, when he got into a dispute with the then president.

AFPBenfica's busy schedule: Mourinho looking to build on positive start

After facing Gil Vicente on Friday, the big reunions keep coming, with a trip to Chelsea in the Champions League on September 30, and then a huge domestic clash with early Liga Portugal pacesetters Porto on October 5.

Leeds eye move for "outstanding" £35m star who was hammered at Elland Road

Leeds United are interested in a move for an “outstanding” £35m player in the summer transfer window, according to a transfer update.

Farke in need of attacking signings for Leeds

The start of the new Premier League season is now less than two weeks away, with the Whites preparing for their return to the top flight after two years away.

Daniel Farke will be pleased with some of Leeds’ summer transfer business, not least midfield additions such as Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff, but he will also know that further attacking signings are important, stressing as much over the weekend.

Everton striker Beto has been linked with a move to Leeds this summer, with the Blues seemingly happy to move him on after completing the signing of Thierno Barry from Villarreal earlier in the window.

Meanwhile, Fulham ace Rodrigo Muniz has also been backed to come in at Elland Read, in what would be a statement of intent signing by the Whites.

He scored eight goals in as many starts in the Premier League last season, including finding the net in a win over eventual champions Liverpool.

Leeds keen on "outstanding" £35m Sara

Now, according to a new report from Caught Offside, Leeds and 49ers Enterprises are one of six clubs who are eyeing Gabriel Sara from Galatasaray this summer.

The £35m-rated midfielder is also being eyed up by the likes of Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Wolves, with the former thought to be the “most advanced” in their efforts to snap him up.

Galatasaray'sGabrielSarashots at goal Andreas Hillergre

Sara is a top-quality footballer who could be perfect for Leeds, not least because he is capable of taking up both defensive and attacking midfield roles, showcasing his versatility.

The 26-year-old Galatasaray ace has experience of English football already, having played for Norwich City in the past, being praise by David Wagner during their time working together.

“He is an outstanding player. Not only for us but in this division – no one has a doubt about this. It’s crystal clear. All the goals, (barring) the penalty which was lucky, were top class.”

Sara has never beaten Leeds in his career, failing to achieve victory in four attempts, and he was part of the Norwich team that got thumped 4-0 at Elland Road in the Championship playoffs back in 2023/24.

Chris Wood 2.0: Leeds pursuit of £26m star is a "work in progress"

Leeds United are reportedly still considering a swoop to sign a Premier League forward who could be Chris Wood 2.0

That’s not to say that he couldn’t be brilliant for the Whites, however, adding so much quality in the middle of the park and providing stiff competition for Stach, Longstaff and others.

Concern for Martin: Club launch fresh offer to sign "superb" Rangers star

After suffering a 3-1 defeat in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge, Rangers have reportedly been handed further concern in the form of an opening bid for one of Russell Martin’s star men.

Martin "proud" despite Club Brugge defeat

There’s no denying that it’s been a disastrous start for Martin at Rangers. The former Southampton boss is yet to win in the Scottish Premiership and even watched on as his side made hard work of defeating Scottish League One side Alloa Athletic in the cup last weekend. So the arrival of Club Brugge couldn’t have come at a worse time.

Unlike Rangers as of late, the Belgian side were in a ruthless mood and raced into a shock 3-0 lead within the space of 20 disastrous first-half minutes. Ibrox began to empty and the thought of qualifying for this season’s Champions League proper became a mere fantasy for the Gers, who only managed to gain one goal back courtesy of Danilo.

Despite yet another evening to forget, however, Martin was “proud” of his side for how they responded to Club Brugge’s 20-minute thrashing. He told reporters: “That’s as hard as it will ever be for the players on the pitch. I’m proud of how they responded.

“We concede a crazy goal and don’t respond anywhere near well enough. Then we concede out of anxiety and make decisions based on desperation. The game plan went out the window. When you’re 2-0 down after seven minutes, tactics don’t come into it. It’s not about style of play it’s about the reaction and we didn’t react well.”

Not Djiga: Rangers must axe star who "looks like he's hasn't kicked a ball"

As Rangers’ Champions League hopes went up in flames, beaten 3-1 by Club Brugge, a summer signing “looks like he’s hasn’t kicked a ball before”.

ByBen Gray Aug 20, 2025

Meanwhile, with one leg out of the Champions League, the Gers could reportedly be in for an almighty blow on the transfer front to only add to their recent woes.

Lille submit fresh Igamane offer

According to Rangers Review, LOSC Lille have now submitted a fresh loan offer to sign Hamza Igamane, only for that to be laughed off by the 49ers who have set their price-tag at a hefty £15m to sell the forward. Whether the French side now opt to get anywhere near that valuation before the end of the month remains to be seen.

The 49ers’ stance will come as a major relief to Martin, who simply cannot afford to lose a player of Igamane’s quality at this stage of the transfer window. The talented forward is yet to start a game under the new manager as he works his way back to full fitness after a disrupted pre-season, but Rangers will be hoping to see their star man become a much-needed difference-maker sooner rather than later.

A player who was described as “superb” by scout Jacek Kulig last season, Igamane has all the tools to become the most important player of Martin’s tenure and Rangers simply must avoid his departure at all costs this summer.

Wrexham lose £4m summer signing as Phil Parkinson confirms devastating new injury blow amid nightmare start to Championship season

Wrexham have been dealt another major injury blow, with Phil Parkinson confirming that £4m summer signing Liberato Cacace has been ruled out of action "for weeks". The Red Dragons have endured a nightmare start to their 2025-26 Championship campaign as they find themselves in the bottom half of the table with just one win from their first five matches. They have been plagued with multiple injuries since start of the season.

  • Cacece's injury problems

Liberato Cacece completed his move to Wrexham from Serie A side Empoli in the summer for a record-breaking transfer fee. The New Zealand international started in the club's season opener against Southampton last month but he sustained a hamstring injury in that game. Cacece then returned to action against Millwall, but is now facing another spell on the sidelines after injuring his other hamstring.

    Parkinson's update on Cacece

Speaking on the full-back's condition, Wrexham boss Parkinson said: "Libby's going to be out a few weeks, unfortunately. It is a real blow for us. I played it down last week because he did so well at Millwall. I brought him off to protect him and he's got a tendon problem in his other hamstring. He's not a player who's had injuries before in his career, his record's good, but sometimes when you're coming back from one injury, you overcompensate a little bit and he's picked up another one.

"He's a player our home fans haven't seen yet, his two appearances have been away, but we have just got to get him back as soon as we can. Libby's a player our supporters are going to enjoy watching when we get him out there."

  • Three Wrexham stars ready to return to squad

Cacece will join the likes of Danny Ward, Jay Rodriguez and Andy Cannon on the sidelines, who are already out on a long-term basis. However, there is some good news for the Welsh club as Josh Windass and George Thomason have fully recovered from their respective injuries and are ready to make a comeback. Meanwhile, Ollie Rathbone, who suffered a serious injury during pre-season, has also returned to training and is likely to feature in the next game.

Parkinson added: "They trained a bit last week but (last Saturday's game against QPR) was just too soon for them. I've always got to think long-term as well because if I expose players too soon and they get injured, then it affects us going forward. But Josh and George have trained really well this week, and they're available for selection at the weekend."

Trip to Norfolk next for the Red Dragons

Wrexham, who are co-owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, will aim to get back to winning ways when they travel to Norfolk to take on Norwich on Saturday.

West Brom gem fans have barely seen is wowing Ryan Mason behind the scenes

West Bromwich Albion have got off to the perfect start in their Championship season. Ryan Mason’s side have aspirations of returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2021, and although they sit outside of OPTA’s top six favourites to get promoted, have won two from two so far.

The Baggies have been making moves in the transfer market, like signing Birmingham City’s captain, Krystian Bielik, as a replacement for Torbjorn Heggem.

Bielik’s arrival was joined by Man Utd youngster Toby Collyer, whose attitude behind the scenes has been impressing the gaffer.

Mason praises Collyer before Portsmouth clash

West Brom’s season-long loan deal does not include an option/obligation to buy, but perhaps it is something the board will consider working on if the early indications are anything to go by.

The defensive midfielder spoke candidly during United’s pre-season tour about his desire to get minutes this season, whether that be at United or out on loan, and although he has only been seen by Baggies fans for a few moments so far, Mason like what he’s seen.

“Good kid, humble, wants to work, wants to be part of it and you can feel that as soon as you speak to him,” he said ahead of the clash with Pompey.

“He wants to play football, loves football, and that’s super important. We want those types of people in the building who want to work, put in the work, and be part of something.”

West Brom have a real talent on their hands for the next season, and United not including a buy option is a testament to their belief in him, as while he's not Premier League quality right now, they believe he will be in the near future.

The player was also clearly eager for this move as the Manchester Evening News reported that over a dozen Championship sides had inquired about Collyer’s availability, with it coming down to West Brom and Hull in the final few days.

Hull’s interest in the player went as far as the manager, Sergej Jakirovic, speaking publicly about their interest in him: “We’re waiting now for a decision from Man United and Toby as well… he can run 12km, he’s good on the ball and he’s a bit like Joel Ndala. He has a big potential, and he has hunger and ambition, and this is what we’re searching for.”

With the amount of interest in Collyer, the player must see something at West Brom that allures him. Given the promise United see in him and his desire to be at the club, perhaps the two parties could achieve the team’s promotion ambitions.

India's spin and England's pace cross swords again as series shifts to Pune

Sanju Samson and Phil Salt will hope to get back among the runs as the series nears its climax

Ten Doeschate: ‘Suryakumar a couple of shots away from regaining form’

Big picture: Series alive, using contrasting methodsThe five-match series between India and England was expected to be a high-scoring one. A battle of sixes if you will. But three games in, this hasn’t been the case, but the series has by no means been devoid of thrills. It’s 2-1 going into Friday night in Pune, and it’s the bowling attacks that have stood out, in contrasting ways. While India have stacked their side with as many as four spin options, England have primarily relied on hitting the short-of-good lengths and undoing India with high pace: Mark Wood and Jofra Archer have tried to soften up the batters in the powerplay before handing over to Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton to pound the hard lengths through the middle overs.Related

Adil Rashid's simple trick to wreck India's batting

India have fielded just the one frontline quick – Arshdeep Singh in the first two games and the returning Mohammed Shami in the third – and used every type of spin at their disposal. England have not really found a way past them, but remain alive in the series thanks to their great escape in Rajkot led by Adil Rashid, who bowled a wily spell of legspin following a last-wicket rescue act alongside Wood. With the track in Pune also likely to favour spin, Rashid could revel once again, but it will only present Varun Chakravarthy and his spin colleagues another chance to get at England’s struggling batters.Form guideIndia LWWWW

In the spotlight: Sanju Samson and Phil SaltLast October, Sanju Samson was given the chance to claim ownership of a top-two slot in India’s T20I line-up. And he set about it in fine fashion, scoring three centuries in five outings. One of them was in Johannesburg on a bouncy surface against the likes of Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen. But Samson hasn’t quite mastered the pace of Mark Wood and Jofra Archer in this series. He has scores of 26, 5 and 3 so far, and has tended to get dismissed while being late on his shots. This may not yet be a cause for alarm for Samson or the India team mangement, given the next T20 World Cup is a fair distance away. But runs in a game India need to win to seal the series could go a long way towards raising both Samson’s and the team’s confidence.Having given blazing starts to champions Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, Phil Salt was expected to set the tone for England on his first tour of India since. His last international series was also a productive one, bringing him an unbeaten 103 and a 55 against West Indies in the Caribbean. But his three outings in this series have yielded 0, 4 and 5, even if he hasn’t really looked out of touch. Can Salt overturn this run of scores as England look to push the series into a decider?Team newsIndia assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said Rinku Singh batted on Thursday and is fit. Pitch and conditionsEvenings in Maharashtra have been on the cooler side with temperature in Pune expected to be in the late teens through the duration of the game. Teams batting first have tended to win more matches at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium: 35 times in 64 men’s T20 matches. The pitch is generally a black-soil one that favours spinners. Mitchell Santner picked up 13 wickets in a Test against India in October 2024, and then the only Ranji Trophy match here this season saw spinners take 34 of 39 non-run-out wickets.Stats and trivia India’s run-rate in the middle overs (7 to 16) in T20Is since the start of January 2024 is 9.45, the best among Full-Member teams. India have picked up 30 first-over wickets in T20Is since the start of 2022, the most by any team. They’ve done this over 91 innings, which means they’ve struck in the first over almost once every three innings. England have lost the only previous T20I they’ve played in Pune, while India have won two and lost two at the venue, including their previous one against Sri Lanka in 2023. Only two of Mohammed Shami’s 24 T20I appearances, including the outing in Rajkot, have come in IndiaQuotes”Regardless of how it went, it is so happy to see him playing for India again. It’s been a long time since he has played. He has been such a performer for the team. I thought he bowled well, apart from maybe that full-toss. Nice to see him build up in training again tonight.”
“We are moving in the right direction. I am really happy with the style we are trying to play and continuing to be aggressive and taking the shots on.”

Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham make contact over signing £80m Chelsea player

Tottenham could turn to London rivals Chelsea in search of reinforcements this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano, with contact made over signing one Blues player who’s set to leave Stamford Bridge.

Spurs’ need for reinforcements before the transfer deadline on September 1 is indisputable.

Having lost club legend Son Heung-min to LAFC and James Maddison to a serious knee injury this week, with Dejan Kulusevski also still out for a “long time” too, manager Thomas Frank is in danger of entering the 2025/2026 campaign desperately short of attacking outlets.

Their need for a new forward signing has dramatically escalated in the last few days, especially following confirmation that Maddison has ruptured his ACL and requires surgery, with the Englishman now expected to miss most of the campaign.

FFC Spurs – James Maddison

“I think we are definitely in the market in general,” Frank said about summer transfers, in the aftermath of their 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich.

“Of course, when players get a long-term injury we need to look into that, but generally we are in the market, yes. Nobody feels close or far away. I’m not saying anything before there’s anything that is completely 100%.”

There isn’t exactly much urgency from Frank here as the Dane attempts to quell panic and let technical director Johan Lange do his work behind-the-scenes, but Spurs need a new attacker desperately – something he’ll be acutely aware of.

Since the announcement of Maddison’s lengthy injury lay-off, a flurry of reports have linked Spurs with a wide array of attacking options.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Tottenham have already had a bid rejected for Como forward Nico Paz, while it is also believed that contact was made for Man City star Jack Grealish earlier this week amid Everton’s talks for the 29-year-old (Fabrizio Romano).

Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott is another candidate to reinforce Spurs’ attacking line, but he may not be for much longer as RB Leipzig advance a move for the 22-year-old, so Lange will need to formalise the club’s interest soon.

According to Romano, Spurs are also making contingency plans in the event Richarlison leaves.

Tottenham make contact over signing Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson

The reliable reporter, via X, now claims that Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is on their shortlist of potential replacements for the Brazilian.

It isn’t just interest, either, with Romano revealing that Tottenham have made contact over signing Jackson – who’s set to be one of the next “big players” moving on in this summer’s striker domino.

The Senegalese commands a rumoured valuation of £80-£100 million, according to Sky Sports, and Daniel Levy is very unlikely at best to green-light what would be a club-record deal for Jackson considering Chelsea’s need to sell.

The Lilywhites will almost certainly look to negotiate a lower fee for him, should Richarlison leave, and they decide to move.

Jackson was actually called one of Chelsea’s most important players last season by Joe Cole, but the arrival of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap means he’ll struggle for game time next season – making a move away the best option for all parties.

– Tivemos nossa melhor fase nesses quatro jogos invictos.
