Stuttgart midfielder 'doesn't like' Rodri comparisons and hails Joshua Kimmich as example to follow as youngster addresses Real Madrid return talk

Stuttgart midfielder Chema Andres has drawn comparisons to Rodri following his impressive start in Germany, with rumours now stating that Real Madrid are considering re-signing him next summer. While the former Real Madrid youngster is "privileged" to be compared to the Manchester City midfielder, he is not particularly a big fan of the comparisons.

Chema on song for Stuttgart

Having spent a measly €3 million for 50 per cent of Chema's rights over the summer, Stuttgart have seen the the Spanish wonderkid make rapid strides since he joined from Real Madrid. What initially seemed like a bargain has proven to be an even greater value, with Chema now a regular feature in head coach Sebastian Hoeness' plans. The Madrid academy graduate has played in eight of Stuttgart's 10 games this season, registering an incredible 94 per cent passing accuracy. Not only is he a commanding presence on the pitch from the defensive midfield role, but has also started to unlock his ability to create danger in the final third.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportChema doesn't like to be compared to Rodri

His initial displays for Stuttgart have seen him being labelled as a "Rodri-type" profile, a tall defensive midfielder who keeps things tidy in possession and is authoritarian while winning the ball back. Chema, though, is not a big fan of comparisons.

Speaking to , he said: "People compare a lot, but I don't like it. He's a great player, and we're at very different levels. He's a world-class player, and I'm just starting my career. It's a privilege and a blessing that people see some similarity between us. To be compared to someone of that stature is incredible. Physically, we're somewhat similar, and our playing style may be similar, but comparisons in football aren't good."

When asked which players he looks up to, Chema added: "I'm watching the German league a lot these days. I'm paying attention to Kimmich. Physically, he doesn't look like me, but I think he's spectacular on and off the ball. He recovers and organises. Everything Bayern does goes through him."

A return to Real Madrid on the cards?

Los Blancos still hold 50 per cent of Chema's rights and reportedly have a buy-back option of around €10 million (£9m/$12m). According to reports, Madrid are considering re-signing the 20-year-old next summer, along with Como sensation Nico Paz. Chema is seen by Madrid as the ideal backup to Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Stuttgart star, however, is not in any rush, adding: "Madrid is where everyone wants to be, where every player wants to play. But you have to understand that life goes in stages. My time there was over, and the best thing was to change destinations and start a new life, with other projects and motivations.

"After seven years, Real Madrid is very important in my life. Returning isn't something I'm thinking about right now. I'm happy in Germany. Football is huge, and there are great clubs. Sometimes people focus only on Real Madrid, but every player has his own path. The future will tell."

Man Utd tipped to join race for Premier League star who's an "absolute gem"

Manchester United could now join the race to sign a Premier League player who has been described as an “absolute gem” of a footballer.

Amorim backed by former Man Utd player

It’s fair to say that Ruben Amorim is feeling the heat as Red Devils manager, not least after the humiliating EFL Cup penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town last month.

Despite this, former United defender Phil Jones has shown his support for the Portuguese, suggesting he still believes he is the right man for the job.

“I’ll tell you where I’m at with Amorim… I like him. I like the transparency he has between the players and the fans – and I think that’s certainly been something we’ve missed over the last few years. I think certain previous managers have missed a trick, because if you’re transparent with this fanbase, they will back you all the way; they will sing your name and cheer for you.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimbefore the match

“Look, he came in straight away and said things were going to get worse before they got better, and that’s been the case. I like his authenticity. He is who he is, and he’ll face criticism for it. But he’s not going to change for anyone. He owns it. He inherited a squad which wasn’t his, halfway through a season, who were used to playing a different way. Let’s just give him time.”

United are by no means the finished article, and they still need to strengthen certain areas of the squad after a mixed summer transfer window.

Man Utd could join race for Premier League hero

Speaking to The Boot Room, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Manchester United could join the race to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, should they secure Champions League football this season.

“Liverpool will be back for him, of course. But they know they’ll be one of many clubs making an offer. Now, with Guehi, it resets everything. Everyone starts at a blank slate. Guehi’s people are aware of the clubs who have already told them they’ll be making an offer next summer – clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid.

“In England, let’s see where Tottenham finish – they love him as a player. Would Chelsea come into the equation on a free transfer? Of course, they would. Man United? If they finish in the top four, of course they do.”

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates scoring their second goal

Guehi missed out on joining Liverpool on deadline day, despite even passing a medical, so for United to suddenly swoop in and sign him next summer would be significant, pipping their rivals to his signature in the process.

The 25-year-old is a fantastic player who has grown into a key starter for England in the coming years, with coach Michael Beale hailing him during his time working with him at Chelsea as a youngster.

“He shows a huge amount of confidence to play on the left side and his technical upbringing from Chelsea means he can use his left foot, albeit he is dominant on his right foot. When you see the teams line up, he’s not the biggest centre-back but he has a huge leap. Quietly people are realising we have an absolute gem in him.”

Guehi is out of contract at Palace in 2026, and his anger at not joining Liverpool means he is highly unlikely to sign an extension, so United should be all in on signing him on a free transfer.

Kent storm past Middlesex, Sussex avoid Buckinghamshire upset

New ECB knockout competition gets underway with 13 ties between counties in Tiers 2 and 3

ESPNcricinfo staff05-May-2025Kent cruised into the second round of the Vitality T20 County Cup thanks to a five-wicket win over Middlesex at Radlett. Set a target of 137, the visitors got home with more than two overs to spare thanks to a barnstorming finish from Elsa Barnfather, who top-scored from No. 6 with 29 off just 14 balls.Having been asked to bat, Middlesex were well placed on 85 for 1 in the 12th over, led by No. 3 Finty Trussler’s half-century. But Trussler’s departure for 52 off 41 with 10 fours triggered a slow-motion collapse. Opener Artemis Downer anchored the innings with 30 off 34, but Gayatri Gole was the only other batter to reach double-figures as Middlesex stuttered along to 136 for 7.Amy Gordon took two wickets while Kent wicketkeeper Molly Davis effected three stumpings. In reply, Kent were given a fast start by openers Gordon and Grace Poole, who put on 42 inside the first five overs. Gordon was bowled swinging across the line at Hannah Davis, and Kent’s progress was checked by a thrifty display from Anaya Patel, who claimed 3 for 18 from her four overs. But Barnfather, fresh from scoring a century and taking a five-wicket haul for Gunnersbury against a Cricket Writers’ Club XI on Sunday, struck six boundaries in short order to seal victory for her side and a second-round tie against Berkshire, to be played on Saturday. The ECB’s new “FA Cup-style” knockout competition involves 37 teams from all three tiers of the new women’s county structure. The first round saw 13 ties (with three teams given a bye) between counties in Tiers 2 and 3, with the professional Tier 1 teams set to be involved from round three onwards. The biggest margin of victory came at Harrogate, where Yorkshire thumped Derbyshire by 122 runs, Lauren Winfield-Hill hitting 19 boundaries in her 88 off 52 balls. They will next play Staffordshire, who eased past Cumbria by seven wickets with 29 balls remaining.Down at Hove, in the only fixture that offered the chance of a giant-killing, Tier 3 Buckinghamshire had Tier 2 Sussex in trouble at 58 for 5 in the 12th over, with the top three all dismissed in single-figures. But Talitha Stanley, with an unbeaten 29 from 32 balls, helped Sussex scrape up to respectability on 124 for 8, before adding three wickets to her haul as Buckinghamshire folded for 78.Elsewhere, Glamorgan piled up an impressive 183 for 4 against Gloucestershire at Newport, Bea Ellis thumping 77 from 41 balls to follow up a more composed half-century from captain Lauren Parfitt, as the home side won by 33 runs. Northamptonshire overcame Worcestershire by five wickets at Wantage Road, while in the west country derby, Devon won a low-scoring thriller against Dorset, edging their way to a four-wicket win with five balls to spare after being set a target of 72.Round Two

Rain halts Gloucestershire's progress after Ben Compton's defiance

Opener’s 298-ball innings and the loss of 36 overs could see Kent escape with a draw

Gloucestershire have reached 112 for 2 in the second innings of their Rothesay County Championship game with Kent on Sunday, a lead of 191.Ben Charlesworth was their top scorer with 58, but bad light halted play with 36 overs remaining and the forecast for tomorrow suggests a draw is probable.Earlier, Ben Compton hit his highest Kent score of 178 as the hosts made 393, a first innings deficit of 79. Kent were 318 for 7 when play began in Baltic conditions, with the lights on and in front a meagre crowd.Compton was on 144 overnight and had only moved to 148 when he flashed at Marchand de Lange and was dropped by Cameron Green at first slip. He swatted the next ball to the midwicket boundary to pass 150, but Jas Singh produced just one elegant cover drive for four before being caught behind off Matt Taylor for five.Taylor was denied a second wicket when Kashif Ali hit him straight into Miles Hammond’s chest at short leg and Kashif somehow survived for 89 balls to make 34 not out, including a six he swept off Ollie Price that sailed over cow corner. He put on a stand of 60 with Compton, who finally went when he charged down the wicket to Graeme van Buuren and was stumped by James Bracey. Nathan Gilchrist lasted just eight balls before he was lbw to the same bowler for one, leaving Kent seven short of an additional batting point.Ben Charlesworth was on 17 when he edged Jas Singh, but Chris Benjamin, keeping in place of Harry Finch who has a broken finger, put the chance down.Cameron Bancroft went lbw to Joey Evison for 22 and Jack Leaning had Charlesworthcaught by Zak Crawley at cover. Light rain then began to fall but the players stayed out until 3.50 pm when the light deteriorated to the point that the umpires called an early tea.Rainfall prevented a resumption and play was abandoned for the day at 5.18 pm.

Ruben Amorim confirms decision on Bruno Fernandes as Man Utd penalty taker after captain's misses against Fulham and Brentford

Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will continue as Manchester United's first-choice penalty taker, despite costly recent misses against Fulham and Brentford in the Premier League. The Portuguese has scored just one of three from the spot so far this season, the decider at home to Burnley, but Amorim maintains full faith in his club captain ahead of the Red Devils trip to face Liverpool on Sunday.

  • Fernandes to remain Man United's penalty taker

Speaking ahead of taking his team to Anfield, Amorim backed his captain to return to goalscoring form from the spot after missing two from three so far this season.

He made sure to underline the 31-year-old's impressive previous penalty return across his time at Old Trafford and his career as a whole. Fernandes has scored 62 of 70 penalties, missing just eight, a conversion rate of 88.6%. His rate at United is slightly lower, scoring 39 from 45 for an 86.6% conversion rate, an impressive return nevertheless.

Amorim's words reflect the fact that Fernandes has been a reliable penalty taker throughout his time as a professional, and has bounced back from missing from the spot in the past. Though he had never previously missed twice in the same calendar year before, meaning this is new territory, but he maintains the faith of his manager ahead of Sunday's crucial North West derby (16:30 BST).

    Amorim: He's really confident

Amorim said: "Yes, he's the main taker. I think he has 70 penalties and he misses nine – two with me."

The head coach reflected on the two Fernandes has missed under him. "I'm really annoyed with that," Amorim said. "But he's really confident. He’s training [to take] the penalties, trying to understand that people are watching the way he [tries to] score penalties. So he will be ready."

  • United's head coach reflects on important Anfield trip

"The environment is going to be loud but we are ready to play in that," he said. "If you look at last year, sometimes we play better in that kind of environment than the pressure at home. We never know what is going to happen. We showed last year there, we can handle it. The way we start the game is more important than the environment. To do a really good warm-up. To have a feeling. To understand that it's going to be tough in the first moments. I know they are ready."

Amorim claimed many in his side may not be aware of United's poor recent record at Anfield, where they have won just once in the past decade. "Football players nowadays don't watch many games, unfortunately," he said. "I have so many things to use [as inspiration] with our players. Like winning back-to-back games [in the league for the first time]. We have so much to win if we perform and win the next game. I don’t need to use those games in the past."

Amorim said of reports linking Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee with possible moves in January: "I know that in our club there is a lot of noise. You have to have news. Players are not playing. They want to play. There's a World Cup. I understand that but they are our players and we need everyone to have a good season. I'm just focused on the future of the club, on the present of the club. That is the most important thing."

A huge North West derby clash awaits

United face Liverpool knowing that defeat against their greatest rivals is never acceptable to fans. The Red Devils fell to some humiliating defeats at the hands of the Reds several times during the Jurgen Klopp era, with 2023's 7-0 trouncing the worst defeat United have experienced to their rivals in history.

But the Red Devils have drawn on their last two visits to Anfield, which will give increased optimism ahead of the anticipated showdown. In the all-time charts of matches between the two sides, United have the slight edge with 91 wins to Liverpool’s 82, while the pair have drawn 71 times.

Liverpool come into the match on the back of three defeats in a week prior to the international break, while United have had a mixed start to the season and sit in 11th place despite picking up just one point away from home. Victory could prove season-changing for both sides, as it always is in a fixture of this magnitude, but its timing appears particularly significant – particularly for the under-pressure Amorim.

Leeds are brewing a homegrown Wilson in “very talented” 18-year-old star

Leeds United head back into Premier League action after the international break, eager to pick up their first win in the challenging division since the opening weekend.

Since that 1-0 success over Everton at Elland Road, Daniel Farke’s Whites have depressingly lost 5-0 away at Arsenal, drawn 0-0 with Newcastle United back on home turf, and have even been dumped out of the EFL Cup by a youthful Sheffield Wednesday.

Standing in their way of a first away win of the season will likely be Harry Wilson, with the deadline day target for the Whites no doubt ready to inflict more pain on Farke and Co. by terrorising the Leeds defence at Craven Cottage later today.

Why Leeds will need to contain Wilson

Despite having a deal in the works on deadline day, a last-gasp change of heart from Fulham would see a late move for the Welshman to swap London for Yorkshire fall through.

Having started Fulham’s last contest against Brighton and Hove Albion before this messy situation unfolded, Wilson might well get the nod to start against Farke’s men, too, with a desire to show Leeds what they heartbreakingly missed out on.

After all, despite all the talk about his future and Wilson’s inability to pick up a goal or assist so far this season, he does have a moment of magic like this flicked finish against Brentford up his sleeve.

In total, for the Cottagers, the ex-Liverpool man has a hefty tally of 25 goals and 38 assists next to his name, with his own personal record against Leeds also making him a worthy candidate to start later today.

From six career clashes against Farke’s men to date, Wilson has two goals and one assist to shout about, with one of those goals even coming about the last time the two teams tussled with each other in Premier League action.

The German will be hopeful that his own set of attackers can rain on the Craven Cottage parade, however, as faces such as Daniel James try to get one over on their former employers.

Leeds are even brewing their own homegrown version of Wilson in the U21 ranks currently, and while the starlet in question won’t be featuring this weekend, he is certainly one to keep an eye on for the future.

Leeds' "very talented" homegrown Wilson

After all, the Premier League newcomers are well-known for their conveyor belt of standout youngsters initially learning the ropes at Thorp Arch, before then exploding into life on the senior scene.

Harry Gray is definitely one who could make waves in the first team picture soon, having just been nominated for Premier League 2 Player of the Month after bagging a blistering four strikes from just three league encounters this season.

Alongside Gray, his fellow attacking teammate for the U21s, Josh McDonald is another name that could soon break into Farke’s first-team plans, having already been branded as “very talented” by Hamilton Academical academy director George Cairns when the teenager was still on the books of the Scottish side.

He has lived up to that high praise in West Yorkshire already, with a whirlwind return of seven goals and six assists for the U18s during his debut season in the youth ranks, bumping him up to the U21 fold.

In time, McDonald might well become Leeds’ very own Wilson to soften the blow of the Welshman staying put at Fulham, with his versatility to play down either wing – as seen in the table above – drawing immediate parallels to the adaptable former Liverpool youth product.

Moreover, with eight goals and eight assists next to his name for Leeds, it’s clear he possesses a similar eye for a goal and an assist to the Cottagers’ number eight, away from being dubbed a “lovely” talent to watch when bursting forward with pace by Whites-based content creator Conor McGilligan.

Leeds will just have to wait and see if their raw Scotsman does go on to have a celebrated career like Wilson, but the early signs are very promising.
