Red Sox Pitcher Garrett Crochet Notches First Complete Shutout Game vs. Rays

It was a career game for Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet on Saturday vs. the Tampa Bay Rays.

Crochet finished the first complete shutout game of his career. This is a huge accomplishment for MLB pitchers, and it's somewhat rare to have a complete shutout game. There's no official historic list of pitchers who have achieved this feat, but Crochet has been hypothetically added to that now.

Crochet's final stat line was nine strikes and three hits over nine innings. He threw 100 pitches with 72 being strikes. He now has a 2.23 ERA.

Crochet leads MLB with 160 strikeouts this season, and he has the fourth-best ERA right now. He has 10 wins and four losses in the Red Sox's 52-45 season.

Crochet has the second-best odds to win the AL Cy Young award this season at +650, according to ESPN. Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal leads the charge now with -260 odds. Crochet put up a pretty good convincing argument on Saturday with his performance.

No Aasgaard; Djiga starts in a 3-4-3: Predicting Rohl's first Rangers XI

The Danny Röhl era at Rangers begins.

Having been unveiled on Monday, the 36-year-old has not had a lot of time to prepare for his first match in charge, which will be Thursday night’s Europa League tie with Brann.

The Gers travel to Bergen having lost five consecutive European matches, currently pointless in the league phase, following defeats at the hands of Genk and Sturm Graz.

Hosts Brann, meantime, narrowly lost their Europa League opener 2-1 against Lille, Hamza Igamane on target for the hosts in Northern France, but then beat Utrecht 1-0 on home turf earlier this month, Sævar Atli Magnússon the match-winner, so will fancy their chances of another scalp.

Rangers though cannot allow that to happen if they’re to get back in the hunt for a place in the knockout stages, so what lineup should Röhl pick as he aims to leave Norway with all three points?

What Rangers supporters should expect from Danny Röhl

Despite his youthfulness, a year younger than defender Leon Balogun who departed in the summer, Röhl has plenty of high-level experience as a coach.

He worked under Ralph Hasenhüttl as an assistant at RB Leipzig and Southampton, before also being an assistant manager at Bayern Munich to Niko Kovač and then Hansi Flick, joining the latter in charge of the German national team at the World Cup in Qatar.

His first head coach role took him to Hillsborough, overseeing 89 matches in charge of EFL Championship crisis club Sheffield Wednesday, saving the Owls from relegation in his first season in charge, before they finished 12th last year, despite being run into the ground by owner Dejphon Chansiri.

In terms of tactics, as outlined in a piece by the Coaches’ Voice, Röhl ‘utilised a variety of formations’ during his time in Yorkshire, regularly switching between a back three and a back four, noting that in build-up play his ‘central defenders split quite wide’, labelling this a ‘key feature’ of his team.

They go on to note that there would always be a double pivot in front of the back-line, with width provided by wing-backs, allowing wide-attackers to penetrate centrally, making them as much of a goal threat as possible.

Thus, expect Röhl to be quite fluid with his formations, while also making regular changes to his starting lineups, especially considering this is the first of six matches on his agenda in the next 17 days, but we’re going to give predicting his first XI a go!

Rangers predicted XI vs Brann

During Russell Martin’s disastrous tenure, as well as under caretaker boss Steven Smith on Saturday, Rangers have always operated out of a back four.

Thus, in search of defensive stability, many are forecasting Röhl will instantaneously switch to a back three, but who would benefit from this change in shape?

Well, Nasser Djiga would for starters, simply because a third centre-back is needed.

John Souttar and deadline day signing Derek Cornelius have formed an encouraging partnership in recent weeks, while Wolves loanee Djiga has started just two of the last seven matches, not exactly endearing himself to his new supporters by being sent off against Dundee during his home league debut.

Meantime, at wing-back, Jayden Meghoma, on loan from Brentford, is the only natural left-back at the club, but has really struggled, so the vastly more experienced Max Aarons could fill in on that side, despite being naturally right-footed.

On the opposite flank, there has been debate for many years about captain James Tavernier’s defensive acumen, but one cannot argue with his attacking output, considering he is the club’s joint-top scorer this season with five, taking his tally to 135 for the club against Dundee United at the weekend, and a wing-back role could help him get back to his best.

The importance of a midfield duo in Röhl’s system has already been alluded to, so luckily for him Rangers’ best player last season was Nicolas Raskin, back in the team now and playing week in and week out, after a falling out with Martin earlier in the campaign that really saw supporters turn against the manager.

Alongside, none of Joe Rothwell, Connor Barron, Thelo Aasgaard nor Lyall Cameron appear particularly appetising options, if we’re being totally honest.

Thus, Röhl will hope to have Mohamed Diomandé available, after the Côte d’Ivoire international sat out the weekend draw due to a knock, but is expected to be available for the trip to Bergen.

Raskin and Diomandé as a pair certainly boast the athleticism and on-ball quality to be able to dominate matches, even at a high level.

Scout Emir has certainly been impressed by the Ivorian, noting that he is “relentless in duels” while also constantly showing for the ball under pressure, concluding that he is becoming the “complete midfielder”.

Lastly, in attack, Djeidi Gassama will certainly be in the line-up, considering he made 81 appearances for Röhl when the pair were together at Sheffield Wednesday, while he is Rangers’ joint-leading scorer this season with five, all of which have come in Europe, thereby hoping for more of the same in Norway.

The Frenchman has already shown that he can link up well with fellow new recruit Oliver Antman, the pair combining to score the third goal during a demolition of Viktoria Plzeň during Champions League qualifying, the clear high point of Martin’s ill-fated tenure.

Lastly, despite splashing £10m to sign Youssef Chermiti, thereby making him the club’s second-most expensive signing of all-time, it’ll surely be Bojan Miovski leading the line, the North Macedonian looking to add to his two goals for the club to date.

They may not have shown it very much this season, currently pointless in the Europa League and sixth in the Scottish Premiership, but Rangers do boast some good players.

So, if Röhl can turn them into a functioning team, results will exponentially improve for sure, of that there is no doubt.

Moyes can revive Barry & Beto by relocating Everton's "creator of chaos"

Everton have made a noticeable step forward in the early stages of the 2025/26 season.

Under David Moyes, the team has shown more cohesion, tempo, and tactical clarity than in recent campaigns.

They currently sit eighth in the Premier League with three wins and eleven points, having also picked up victories against Wolves and Brighton, while suffering narrow defeats to Leeds and Liverpool.

The improvement is clear, yet one area that remains a concern is Everton’s attacking output.

Despite the team showing better structure, their forwards have struggled to consistently convert opportunities into goals.

Moyes’ side has been effective in linking midfield to attack, but the finishing touch has often been missing.

This leaves room for a player capable of creating, unlocking defences, and elevating teammates to make a difference in front of goal.

The spotlight has primarily fallen on Thierno Barry and Beto, Everton’s two principal options at the No. 9 position.

Both have their strengths, but neither has yet stamped themselves as the first-choice striker capable of leading the line consistently.

That is where one of Everton’s best players comes into the conversation, ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Manchester City.

Beto and Barry's continued struggles at Everton

Barry, the French U21 international, arrived at Everton in the summer for £27.6m from Villarreal, bringing a profile similar to that of Dušan Vlahović or Ollie Watkins, as noted by FBref.

At 6ft 5in, he possesses a commanding aerial presence, winning nearly two-thirds of the duels contested in the penalty area last season and ranking in the 87th percentile for aerials won (3.84 per 90).

Barry is also adept at carrying the ball forward and stretching defensive lines, ranking in the 74th percentile for progressive carries (1.70 per 90) and the 62nd percentile for successful take-ons (0.77 per 90).

Despite these promising metrics, Barry has yet to make a significant impact in the Premier League.

Against Crystal Palace, for instance, he played 19 touches, completing only four of eight passes, registering no shots, and losing possession ten times, as per Sofascore.

While Moyes has cautioned that Barry needs time to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League, the sense remains that Everton require more immediate returns from their striking options.

Beto, meanwhile, is alternating with Barry in the forward role, showing glimpses of promise but failing to assert himself as the consistent focal point of attack.

Everton’s system demands a striker who can both finish and facilitate; however, both Barry and Beto have, at times, been inconsistent in contributing the decisive final action.

The rotation between them means neither has yet fully settled, and the team’s attacking rhythm has suffered as a result.

This scenario highlights the need for a complementary presence in midfield or wide areas, someone capable of linking play and providing the incisive passes that could allow Barry or Beto to flourish.

How Moyes can get Beto & Barry firing

Illiman Ndiaye, the 25-year-old French midfielder signed from Marseille, has the potential to be that catalyst.

His skill set is ideally suited to Everton’s current configuration: he can operate from the right wing or as a No. 10, carrying the ball, creating overloads, and providing decisive passes into the penalty area.

Ndiaye has already shown glimpses of his technical ability, composure under pressure, and intelligent movement.

He excels in transitioning defence to attack and ranks highly in progressive carries, progressive passes, and successful take-ons per 90 minutes.

His ability to break lines, maintain possession under pressure, and combine effectively with creative teammates could provide the service both Barry and Beto have been missing.

Described by Ben Mattinson as a “creator of chaos,” One of Ndiaye’s defining qualities is versatility.

Moyes has recently deployed him on the right flank, where he can drift inside to create space for overlapping full-backs, although he should be shifted into the No. 10 role, orchestrating attacks behind whichever striker starts.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Putting greater onus on his talents in a central role is crucial, particularly with Jack Grealish unavailable for Everton’s upcoming trip to the Etihad.

In his absence, Ndiaye can offer the creative spark necessary to maintain attacking fluidity, with the likes of Dwight McNeil or Tyler Dibling able to vie for Grealish’s vacant berth down the left.

Beyond statistics, Ndiaye brings energy and tactical intelligence, allowing Everton to press effectively and recover possession quickly, maintaining the high-intensity style Moyes demands.

His combination of technical ability and physical dynamism ensures that he can influence games even when the forwards are struggling for confidence.

For Moyes, integrating Ndiaye successfully could address Everton’s ongoing attacking inconsistencies.

If the Frenchman can link up effectively with Barry or Beto, it could unlock the finishing threat that has so far been sporadic.

Ndiaye’s ability to combine creativity, energy, and positional intelligence may prove the difference in converting strong performances into consistent wins.

Moyes can finally ditch Beto & Barry for Everton's "prolific" 19-year-old

Miguel Rojas Says Dodgers Noticed Drake’s Trash Talk to Shohei Ohtani—and It Backfired

Trolling is a part of sports. Oftentimes, it's the athletes doing it, but every so often, a celebrity will join in on the fun in the name of supporting their favorite team. That's what Canadian rapper Drake did when he playfully trolled Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani in the midst of a thrilling, back-and-forth World Series that was eventually won by Los Angeles in seven games.

Only, the Dodgers didn't see Drake's social media posts as playful trolling. As Dodgers Game 7 hero Miguel Rojas told TMZ in an interview, Los Angeles perceived the Canadian rapper's online jabs at Ohtani to be disrespectful.

Rojas says Drake trolling Ohtani 'didn't go unnoticed'

"… That [Drake's trolling] doesn't go unnoticed," Rojas said. "When you kind of disrespect—a little bit—the best player in the game. Not understanding the quality of the person and what the guy has done for baseball. … You don’t have to do that, man.”

What did Drake post about Ohtani?

Drake decided to have a little social media fun at the Dodgers‘ expense following the Blue Jays‘ Game 5 victory—in which Toronto starter Trey Yesavage dominated Los Angeles‘s lineup. The Canadian rapper took to Instagram and trolled Ohtani, who went 0-for-4 with a strikeout against Yesavage.

Rojas credited Yesavage for his superb pitching, but noted that in the Dodgers‘s eyes, Drake didn't have to go there and troll Ohtani. The Dodgers infielder, who hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning of Game 7, explained that Drake's trolling is what prompted teammate Kiké Hernández to take a shot at the rapper during the team's victory celebration.

Kiké Hernández fires back at Drake after Dodgers‘ World Series win

Hernández, during his speech at the Dodgers‘ World Series parade, couldn't resist taking a not-so-subtle jab right back at Drake, referencing one of Drake's songs, "Big Rings."

"…Playing the most games in October for this franchise, for this really big team that has a lot of really big rings," Hernández said.

Perhaps the Drake curse lives on?

Anthony Rizzo Nearly Caught Cubs Player's First MLB Home Run

Baseball has a funny way of bringing things full circle.

Cubs legend Anthony Rizzo was in attendance Saturday as he was honored in a ceremony at Wrigley Field Saturday and retired a Cub as he's set to become an ambassador for the team. He decided to take in some of the game against the Rays from the Wrigley Field bleachers. Unbeknownst to him, he picked the perfect spot.

Moisés Ballesteros, the 21-year-old Cubs designated hitter, smacked the first home run of his young MLB career on Rizzo's special day. In incredibly miraculous fashion, he hit the ball directly to the heart and soul of Chicago's 2016 World Series championship team.

Ballesteros took an inside fastball to the opposite field up and over the left-field wall. Rizzo saw the ball coming his way and stepped on top of the bleacher where he was sitting to try and make the play. The home-run ball hit him directly in the right hand and bounced two rows above where Rizzo was sitting.

He celebrated with the fan who ended up with the ball after the play as he appeared unable to believe what just happened, similar to the rest of us. Check out one of the most improbable baseball moments you'll ever see below:

"That's why I'm retired," he hilariously mouthed in the crowd after the play.

Maybe Rizzo can make an easy trade with the fan for Ballesteros to get the ball back.

Mariners vs. Padres Prediction, Odds, Probable Pitchers for Tuesday, July 9 (Trust Seattle?)

Both the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres have dropped back-to-back games, but they are playing well overall this season heading into Tuesday’s matchup.

Seattle still leads the AL West, and the Padres — despite moving Juan Soto and losing Blake Snell this offseason — are second in the NL West.

The Mariners are favored in this matchup, likely because they have Logan Gilbert (2.91 ERA) on the mound.

However, Seattle has been significantly better at home (30-18) than on the road (19-25), which makes this matchup a little more interesting.

Let’s dive into the odds, probable pitchers, and a best bet for this interleague matchup on Tuesday night.

Logan Gilbert: Gilbert has been the definition of consistent this season, allowing three or fewer earned runs in 15 of his 18 starts. While the Mariners are just 10-8 when he’s on the bump, the righty has kept them in just about every game in 2024 while striking out 8.3 batters per nine innings. out  He’ll look to keep that rolling on Tuesday night.

San Diego Padres

Jurickson Profar: With Fernando Tatis Jr. on the injured list, even more pressure is on Jurickson Profar (who leads the NL in on-base percentage) to produce for San Diego. The journeyman has found a home in San Fran, hitting .315 with 14 homers and 59 runs batted in during the 2024 season.

Mariners vs. Padres Prediction and Pick

Even though the Mariners have struggled on the road, there are a few reasons why I like them to pull off the win on Tuesday.

It starts with Gilbert, who has led the Mariners to a 10-8 record in his starts, with Seattle winning four of his last five outings.

10-8 isn’t a terrific record, but Gilbert hasn’t allowed more than four runs in a start all season, and he’s only given up more than three in three of 18 starts.

On the Padres side, there has to be some concern with Mazur on the bump.

The rookie has made six starts in 2024, getting through five innings on just two occasions and posting a 7.52 ERA.

On top of that, San Diego has a bullpen ERA of 4.14 in 2024, so there’s no guarantee that it will shut the Mariners down once Mazur exits.

I’ll take the AL West leader to get back in the win column tonight.

Potential Garrett Crochet Trades Could Include Move to Bullpen

Garrett Crochet is arguably the most sought-after starting pitcher at Major League Baseball's trade deadline, but any team acquiring the Chicago White Sox lefty may have to use him out of the bullpen for the rest of the season.

Crochet is in the middle of a breakout season. Through 20 starts, the 25-year-old 6-6 with a 3.02 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP and an MLB leading 150 strikeouts against 23 walks. He has already produced 4.0 WAR, 3.9 fWAR and a 2.36 FIP. He has been dominant.

The issue for interested teams is that Crochet has already thrown 42.1 innings more than he has at any level, including college. He's currently at 107.1 innings pitched, and his previous two highs for a season game in 2019 (65) and 2018 (63.2) while in college at Tennessee. In 2021, he threw 54.1 innings out of the bullpen for the White Sox, but he underwent Tommy John Surgery in April of 2022 and missed all of that season and most of 2023.

Crochet pitched 12.2 innings at the end of the 2023 campaign, and is now up to 107.1 this season, meaning he may be close to his limit. Any team acquiring him would be risking further injury by keeping him as a starter. Therefore he may be ticketed for the bullpen, then returned to the starting rotation in 2025.

As Ken Rosenthal points out, given the season Crochet is having, the White Sox will ask for a massive return as if he's a No. 1 starter. He is under team control through the 2026 season, so it will be fascinating to see how teams handle his value in trade talks.

Crochet has the highest upside of any pitcher being targeted at the trade deadline. His value and how he's used down the stretch are all up in the air.

West Ham get Crysencio Summerville injury update after eight-word message from insider

West Ham have been handed an injury update on Crysencio Summervile after the winger missed their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth last weekend.

The Hammers have rediscovered hope in their battle against relegation after an impressive three-game unbeaten streak that has breathed new life into their campaign under new manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

The turnaround began with a crucial 3-1 home win over Newcastle at the start of November, ending a dismal 248-day wait for a London Stadium victory. Lucas Paqueta’s strike and Sven Botman’s own goal overturned Jacob Murphy’s early opener before Tomas Soucek sealed the points in stoppage time.

The victory was significant not just for the three points but for demonstrating resilience after falling behind early, a scenario that had previously prompted capitulations against Chelsea, Tottenham and Brentford.

Six days later, West Ham delivered another comeback against Burnley, grinding out a vital 3-2 victory. After Zian Flemming’s header put the visitors ahead, Callum Wilson equalised before halftime with his eighth career goal against Burnley. Soucek then produced another crucial intervention, bundling home with thirteen minutes remaining before Kyle Walker-Peters wrapped up all three points just minutes from full-time.

The momentum continued at Bournemouth, where Wilson tormented his former club with two excellent first-half goals. Although Nuno’s side surrendered their two-goal advantage through Marcus Tavernier’s penalty and Enes Unal’s late equaliser, the 2-2 draw extended their unbeaten run to three matches.

West Ham have now got eleven points from their last twelve games, climbing out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Striker could join West Ham for £30m after giving Bayern Munich and Man City nightmares

He’s emerged as one of their arguable best options.

ByEmilio Galantini Nov 26, 2025

Nuno has brought defensive organisation and tactical discipline that was absent under his predecessor Graham Potter. Wilson’s form has been crucial too. Despite initially not being fancied by West Ham’s boss (ExWHUemployee), the summer signing has now bagged four goals in his last three matches.

Jean-Clair Todibo and Max Kilman have improved recently as well, among others, with vice-chair Karren Brady’s decision to push for Nuno’s appointment now paying dividends.

Nuno is on record suggesting that Summerville will be a crucial player for West Ham, and the winger had started every Premier League game for West Ham’s new boss before last weekend’s draw.

ExWHUemployee shares Summerville injury update out of West Ham

Nuno will be keen to have him back to face Liverpool this weekend, and the consensus is that may well be likely.

However, ExWHUemployee has shared an update erring on the side of caution.

Writing via his Patreon, Ex claims that, while Summerville’s injury is perceived as minor, an eight-word message from one of his sources suggests that there is a degree of uncertainty.

If Summerville isn’t fit enough to take part against Liverpool, Nuno will likely call upon Brazilian talent Luis Guilherme, as he did against Bournemouth last Saturday.
