Bancroft's century sets early marker in Test opening race

Teague Wyllie fell just short of a ton as Western Australia ground down the visitors at two runs an over

Former Test opener Cameron Bancroft made an early season statement with a disciplined century to frustrate Victoria’s attack on a sedate WACA pitch to put Western Australia in a strong position in the Sheffield Shield.WA trailed by 19 runs at stumps on day two after Bancroft and Teague Wyllie combined for a 193-run second-wicket partnership.Wyllie, 19, fell short of his second first-class century when he was bowled by quick Mitchell Perry, shouldering arms as the ball nipped back to hit the top of middle stump. It was the only wicket on an attritional day, where WA scored 208 runs off 96 overs.Related

After finishing unbeaten on 121 off 306 balls, Bancroft started his case to replace veteran opener David Warner, who is set to retire from Test cricket this summer. Bancroft has not played Tests since the Ashes in 2019.With fringe Test opener Marcus Harris not playing due to the birth of his first child, Bancroft seized his opportunity on the back of being the standout batter in the Shield last season.Even though he scored 289 more runs than second-placed South Australia batter Daniel Drew, Bancroft did not make the Ashes touring squad but issued a reminder of his indefatigable approach. It was a fitting performance for Bancroft with his mentor Justin Langer, who has acted as his private coach, at the ground.Resuming at 29 for 1, Bancroft and Wyllie dug in as WA scored just 46 runs in 30 overs during a slow first session.WA coach Adam Voges recently said domestic teams might consider adopting elements of Bazball, believing England’s aggressive approach would inevitably creep into the Shield, but Bancroft and Wyllie didn’t get the memo. The pair were forced to stonewall against typically accurate bowling from quick Scott Boland, who had clean bowled WA captain Sam Whiteman in the shadows late on day one.The first boundary was not struck until 45 minutes into the day’s play as Boland – armed with four slips – relentlessly probed outside the off-stump but without reward.WA did not cross 100 runs until midway through the day’s play, but Bancroft and Wyllie started to take advantage of a tiring Victoria in warm conditions.Though a green-tinge was still notable, the pitch flattened under the baking sun as WA eyes a big total with temperatures set to soar on day three.”I think we’re going to try to bat as long as we can…hopefully bat just once,” Wyllie said.Disciplined and playing straight, Bancroft and Wyllie batted in contrast to Victoria who were left to rue gifting several wickets late on on the opening day.Wyllie started last season spectacularly when he famously resisted celebrating his maiden first-class century in the Shield opener against New South Wales. But his form tailed off, perhaps unsurprisingly given his age, as teams exposed him outside the off stump. Wyllie only scored one half-century for the rest of the season, but WA stuck with him and he was at the crease when their title triumph was complete against Victoria.Much like at stages last season, Wyllie was similarly bogged down against Victoria’s accurate pace attack but he dug in alongside Bancroft. The smattering of fans did grow restless, but there were no bronx cheers echoing from the terraces like when Victoria batter Ashley Chandrasinghe produced a painstaking 46 off 280 balls in last season’s final. With solid defence and powers of endurance, like his idol Rahul Dravid, Wyllie kept his composure and made his move in the second session. As temperatures approached 30 degrees celsius, sensing Victoria’s attack was flagging, Wyllie put the foot down to reach his half-century amid three boundaries off Boland. While Wyllie was scoring mostly through boundaries, Bancroft calmly nudged the ball around to pick off the bowling. A rare moment of aggression was against Test offspinner Todd Murphy when Bancroft, an accomplished white-ball batter, hit a reverse sweep to the boundary.Wyllie also took a liking to Murphy, striking several lusty blows after advancing down the pitch. After another quiet patch following Bancroft’s century, Wyllie agonisingly fell short of a ton almost exactly a year since his maiden century earned him national prominence.

Lehmann has now responded to all the criticism the team got after the humiliating loss. The Bianconeri midfielder claimed that she has nothing to prove to the critics and would prefer to answer them with her performances on the pitch. "As a team, we ignore that and concentrate on what we can influence," she began. "Today, we don't have the time to analyze scientific studies."

WHAT LEHMANN SAID

The 26-year-old is excited to take part in the Euros again after featuring at the 2022 tournament in England, as she told reporters: "The atmosphere at the tournament was fantastic – I hope we can experience similar emotions here in Switzerland. It's something very special to be able to play in a home tournament. I'm really looking forward to it."

Lehmann further threw light on the Swiss side's rigorous training, which included the loss to Luzern's U15s team, as she said: "That's no problem for us. We've prepared ourselves as best we can, both physically and tactically, and we're ready to give it our all."

Jaydev Unadkat takes six as Sussex revive promotion challenge

Spirited Leicestershire fall short despite best efforts of Ackermann, Amin, Scriven and Cox

ECB Reporters Network13-Sep-2023Indian left-armer Jaydev Unadkat took six wickets on his home debut as Sussex revived their promotion challenge by wearing down Leicestershire’s spirited resistance to claim only their second win of the season in the LV= Insurance County Championship.Undakat defied the discomfort of a sore ankle to take an outstanding 6 for 94 from 32.4 overs including the last four wickets in 31 balls as they bowled out the Foxes for 483 at Hove to squeeze home by 15 runs.Sussex visit Derbyshire next week before finishing the season at home to Gloucestershire but second-placed Worcestershire, who currently have a 18-point advantage over Sussex, are still favourites for the other promotion place. They play Durham at New Road next week before finishing at Headingley.Leicestershire, for whom Colin Ackermann made 136, Umar Amin 94 and Tom Scriven 78, aren’t completely out of the running to join Durham in Division One next season but have a tough run-in, facing Yorkshire at home before finishing at Durham. After Ackermann and Amin put on 180 for the fourth wicket, Scriven and Ben Cox added 130 for the seventh to take Leicestershire to within 46 runs of victory when Undakat produced an inspired spell down the slope. He found some bounce and seam movement on a benign surface to defeat both established batters. Having made his career-best, Scriven was drawn half-forward and edged behind and Cox taken at head height at slip by Tom Alsop before Scott Currie nibbled at a full-length delivery to bag a second-ball duck. That left Chris Wright, who joins Sussex next season, and last man Matt Salisbury needing 43 and Salisbury batting with a runner because of a hamstring injury. Wright had famously guided Leicestershire to a target of 389 against Yorkshire earlier in the season and when he slapped Fynn Hudson-Prentice for two sixes to help get the target down to 16 Sussex nerves were jangling again, only for Unadkat to produce a brilliant leg-stump yorker that was too good for Wright.Leicestershire had the consolation of making the highest fourth-innings total in their history and there were plenty of periods during a fluctuating day when they looked favourites.Ackermann and Amin added 67 runs in the first hour with few alarms but with the new ball an over away, off-spinner Jack Carson removed both batters in the space of four deliveries. Ackermann, who’d hit 21 fours, was bowled making room to cut and Amin played for turn which wasn’t there and was struck on the back pad six short of his hundred, having hit 17 boundaries.Rehman Ahmed threatened to make the most of being dropped at short leg by Alsop with a single to his name, moving quickly to 29. Sussex had delayed taking the new ball for ten overs but in his third over with it Unadkat persuaded Ahmed to drive at a ball well outside off stump and Carter took a good catch diving to his right. However, with the pitch showing little sign of deterioration Scriven and Cox settled in, saw off the threat of the new ball and after lunch began to tick off the runs with few alarms.Umpires Ben Debenham and Paul Baldwin had to speak to both Carson and captain Cheteshwar Pujara as Sussex’s frustrations threatened to boil over, before Undakat changed the mood completely and the hosts could celebrate winning more than one game in a Championship season for the first time since 2019.

Steven Mullaney relinquishes Notts captaincy

Veteran allrounder vacates role after six seasons in charge

Steven Mullaney has announced his decision to step down as club captain of Nottinghamshire after six years in the role.Mullaney, 36, was in charge when Notts won promotion to Division One last year, and oversaw a sixth place finish on their return to the top tier – although his returns with the bat this season were limited to 485 runs from 12 matches, with one half-century.”I’m honoured, proud and privileged to have had this opportunity,” he said. “My main aim in the job was to make a difference – and while the big goal was to win Division One, and we weren’t quite able to do that, I’m proud of the foundations we’ve been able to put down for us to challenge in the next few years.”As captain, I wanted to have an influence on the culture at the club, and the way we went about things. It took us a couple of years, and we had to have some tough conversations along the way, but I really think we got somewhere.”I’ve put my heart and soul into this job, but I think it’s time for someone else to enjoy the ride. Whoever that is, they’ll have my complete support.”Mullaney took over as captain of Nottinghamshire’s Championship and One-Day Cup teams after the retirement of Chris Read in 2017, before picking up responsibility for the T20 side following Dan Christian’s departure. His involvement with Trent Rockets in the Hundred curtailed Mullaney’s time as 50-over captain, with the job going to Haseeb Hameed – a likely candidate for the red-ball leadership – in 2022.The veteran allrounder, who joined Nottinghamshire in 2010, still has a year left on his most-recent contract with the club and can expect to be a sounding board for whoever succeeds him.”Firstly I’d like to say a huge well done to Steve on his six years as captain,” Peter Moores, Nottinghamshire’s head coach, said. “He took over at a time when we needed to rebuild, having lost several senior players the year before, and when we needed to find a new direction as a group.”He led us superbly through that period, and made sure the players never lost sight of their goals by staying consistent with the messages he got across to them.”Our results in red-ball cricket in recent years, and our retaining of first-division status this summer, are testament to the improvements he helped to bring about. The squad is definitely in a better place now than when he took over, which is ultimately the goal of any captain.”It feels like an exciting time for someone to take over, and I know Steve will be the first to offer his support, with that same goal of bringing further success to the club.”

'Knee held up pretty well' – Williamson marks return from injury with half-century

Kane Williamson marked his return from a six-month injury layoff with a fluent fifty in New Zealand’s warm-up game against Pakistan in Hyderabad.Playing only as a specialist batter, Williamson walked in at No. 3 after New Zealand lost Devon Conway for a duck and stabilised their chase of 346 with a 49-ball half-century. He extended his tally to 54 off 50 balls before retiring out with New Zealand at 141 for 1 after 18 overs.Williamson aims to both bat and field in New Zealand’s second warm-up fixture against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday but will not participate in New Zealand’s World Cup opener against defending champions England in Ahmedabad on October 5.Williamson’s improved fitness comes as a massive boost for New Zealand. At one point, it seemed like he would miss the entire World Cup, but he made a remarkable recovery to return to action. He had ruptured his ACL in March, the opening match of IPL 2023, and had to undergo surgery. He continued his rehab with the New Zealand side that toured England for four T20Is and four ODIs in August and September earlier this year.Related

After putting his feet up in the first innings on Friday, Williamson tested them out and forged a 137-run partnership with Rachin Ravindra, who opened the batting in place of Will Young.Williamson was fairly cautious in the early exchanges, letting Hasan Ali’s outswingers go outside off. He even looked in some discomfort and hobbled between the wickets while sneaking in a leg-bye. But then he lined up tearaway Haris Rauf for a triptych of fours in the seventh over. Despite Pakistan packing the off side, Williamson used his wrists to find the gaps with precision. This prompted Pakistan’s bowlers to shift their lines straighter, but Williamson was ready to pick them away through the leg side.”Just great to get through some batting out in the middle and be part of a match, which was really nice and it [knee] held up pretty well,” Williamson said after New Zealand sealed victory. “[It needed] a little bit of icing afterwards but it’s all part of the process. Yeah, it wasn’t a reality certainly five months ago and [I’ve] been quite fortunate with some of that recovery and to be named in the squad is really exciting for me and just really looking forward to getting out there again. It was nice to do that today.”It was largely pretty good, which was pleasing. Nice to sort of build on that. It was a fantastic hit-out obviously. Pakistan are an outstanding side. I mean both teams were trying to get what they wanted out of it, in terms of bowlers getting overs they needed and time in the legs. So, it’s an exercise, but also nice to compete and do all those things. As a bowling unit and batting unit, plenty to take away from it. There’s always things to work on and it was a great batting performance today. It was a really good surface and it’s nice that we were able to put together partnerships and get time in the middle.”Head coach Gary Stead was also pleased with Williamson’s workout and outlined the plan for the next warm-up match against South Africa.”It was great to see Kane out there albeit only with the bat today,” Stead told NZC media after the game. “We’re hoping he will field 20-25 overs in the next game and we are slowly building him up towards that and making sure he can land and dive and do what he needs to do in the field to take full part for us in the future parts of the tournament.”It was great to see Kane looking like he hadn’t been away from the game. So, awesome to see and I think pretty warming overall from the team perspective that we know he’s pretty close to getting to full fitness; not quite there yet, but we have another step on the way back today.”Pakistan could have cut Williamson’s innings short on 36, but Imam-ul-Haq dropped the catch at extra cover. Williamson then unfurled a variety of sweeps, including the reverse, against the spinners. He reached his fifty with a hard-run single off seamer Mohammad Wasim in the 18th over. Williamson’s right knee was heavily strapped during warm-ups in the lead-up to the game, but overall he ticked quite a few World Cup boxes during his comeback.

Santner also impresses on return

Allrounder Mitchell Santner also made a successful return from injury, taking 2 for 39 in eight overs against Pakistan. After having jarred his knee in the second ODI against England at the Ageas Bowl, Santner did not feature in the last two games of the four-match series. On Friday, he took the new ball and handcuffed both Babar Azam and Abdullah Shafique in the powerplay. Then, when Shafique charged at him to manufacture a stroke, Santner went wide of the crease, shortened his length and had him stumped for 14 off 25 balls. Later, he returned to have Babar dragging a sweep to Daryl Mitchell at wide long-on. He didn’t complete his quota, with New Zealand opting to give their other bowlers a chance to bowl.In all, New Zealand used eight bowlers, with Santner being the pick of the lot. Ravindra, the other left-arm spin-bowling allrounder, struggled with the ball, leaking 60 runs in eight overs. But he made a statement with the bat, scoring a boundary-laden 97 off 72 balls. Young is set to be New Zealand’s first-choice opener along with Devon Conway, but Ravindra’s recent batting form will give New Zealand’s team management a selection headache. Ravindra had also made 61 off 48 balls from No. 7 against England in the Lord’s ODI last month. With or without Young, Ravindra could potentially make the XI when New Zealand visit spin-friendly Chennai for their matches against Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Podolski reveals treatment Sane will receive in TurkeyTold fellow German to leave his money at homeCertain that winger will be treated luxuriouslyFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Sane can expect a hero's welcome in Turkey after sealing his move to Galatasaray, complete with free meals and star treatment, claims former German international Podolski. He joked that the ex-Bayern Munich winger can go anywhere without carrying money, as restaurants will roll out the red carpet for what Podolski calls Galatasaray’s "new top star."

Sane did not enjoy the final two years of his career at the Allianz Arena, and eventually decided that the time was right for him to take on a new challenge despite being offered a new deal. Sane appeared set to extend his contract, but caused a stir when he changed his agent and ended up agreeing to join Galatasaray. A crowd of fans met him at the airport to welcome him to Istanbul, and Podolski, who played for Galatasaray from 2015 to 2017, says he is in for even better treatment in his new city.

WHAT LUKAS PODOLSKI SAID

"Leroy can already prepare himself for leaving his lira at home in the safe if he wants to go out for dinner," Podolski told about his former national team colleague: "As a Gala star, he will be invited everywhere he goes. The main courses will be flying around his ears."

The 40-year-old also claimed that Sane is the biggest arrival in the Super Lig, saying: "Leroy is definitely the king of transfers at Gala. He's not just the new top star there, but in the whole league," he said. "The fans are proud that he's now part of their club. They're grateful for that and will show him.

"Turkey has a reputation for only being able to sign top players when their careers are coming to an end. The league needs to break free from that," he added. "The transfer of Leroy is a good start to bringing in players who still want to achieve a lot in sport – and who are capable of doing so."

Speaking on Sane's reported wage of €12 million, which is almost thrice as much as the next-best earner in Turkey, Podolski opined: "The club has money because it sold its old training ground and has a few million left over. With the money they're currently investing in the team, the club now wants to achieve more than just winning the Super Lig. Something is developing at Galatasaray."
