ODI World Cup digest: Epic Maxwell puts Australia in semi-finals

Then Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwelled his way to a double-century and not only did they win the game, they also sealed their place in the World Cup semi-finals.After Ibrahim Zadran became Afghanistan’s first-ever centurion in World Cups, Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai shredded Australia’s top order as they threatened to script a famous win at the Wankhede. But Maxwell intervened with a sensational 201 not out, 179 of which were scored in an unbroken 202-run partnership with his captain Pat Cummins, to flip the script. The result confirmed Australia’s place in the final four, along with hosts India and South Africa, and left Afghanistan heart-broken.Click here for the full reportMatch analysis: Maxwell stands tallest in adversity to deliver Australia their knock-out blowGlenn Maxwell can finally stop worrying and break into a smile•AFP/Getty Images

Glenn Maxwell was down. He limped through for his 147th run – the 35th single of his innings – and crumpled onto the Wankhede turf, clutching his hamstring, his face clenched in pain. As his muscles cramped and spasmed, Maxwell jerked on the ground, his movements involuntary as his lower body took on a mind of his own. While trying to calm it, Australia’s physiotherapist Nick Jones explained to Maxwell that if he walked off, it would probably be difficult to get back on. In the distance, Adam Zampa came down the change-room stairs, ready to take Maxwell’s place. There’s a punier title up for grabs in Pune on Wednesday – so puny, in fact, that it’s not even an official title, unlike the one that an England amateur team claimed at European Cricket Championships in Malaga last month. Arthur: ‘Unfair to start a witch-hunt on Babar’

This is as much a misery derby as it is a subcontinental one. But for England’s doomed title defence, Bangladesh and Pakistan are the two sides at the bottom of the form table, having combined to lose their last nine matches in this competition. In a sequence of events that has become wearily predictable, off-field drama has overshadowed the lack of on-field accomplishment.Shakib Al Hasan bizarrely flew back home to Bangladesh to work on his batting technique after their game against South Africa, while in Pakistan, accusations of unpaid salaries, player power, and PCB incompetence and malfeasance have already relegated World Cup performances to a sideshow.Team newsPakistan (possible) 1 Abdullah Shafique, 2 Imam-ul-Haq/Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam (capt), 4 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Iftikhar Ahmed, 7 Salman Ali Agha, 8 Usama Mir, 9 Mohammad Wasim/Hasan Ali, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris RaufBangladesh (possible) 1 Litton Das, 2 Tanzid Hasan, 3 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 4 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 5 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 6 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Mahedi Hasan, 9 Taskin Ahmed, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Shoriful Islam

Comment: Why middling scores make for the best kind of ODI

There is, of course, the vicarious thrill of a low score being defended – like Netherlands did against Bangladesh on the same day as the Australia-New Zealand runfest, and India did against England a day later – but it’s the ODIs that produce middling scores, on pitches that don’t reduce bowlers to run-servers, that appeal the most to me. Cue the other thriller from last week: South Africa’s stuttering, nervy chase against Pakistan, where the No. 11 stoutly blocked out a few thunderbolts before the No. 9 secured the win with a deft shot.Texture makes ODIs richer and that’s what the format has over T20s, which can become monochromatic. And of course, when the bowlers are in the game, the match usually stays a contest for longer.Read the full piece from Sambit Bal

George Garton signs for Warwickshire after moving on from Sussex

Left-arm quick joins on three-year deal after leaving boyhood club

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Nov-2023George Garton has joined Warwickshire on a three-year deal after parting company with his boyhood club, Sussex.Garton, 26, will link up with the Warwickshire squad in November for pre-season testing, ahead of a stint at the Abu Dhabi T10s alongside his new club team-mate Moeen Ali.As a left-arm quick, Garton made his England debut on the T20I tour of the Caribbean in January 2022, but has yet to add to his solitary cap. His development, however, was hampered in June 2021, when – as part of England’s ODI squad to face Pakistan – he contracted long Covid, a condition that left him fatigued for more than a year.He has, however, been on the selectors’ radar for several years, and in 2017-18, aged 20, he was drafted into England’s Ashes squad as emergency cover. Previously, he had represented England at Under-19 level, claiming 72 wickets from 81 games overall including appearances at the 2016 World Cup.”I am delighted to be joining the Bears and I have the utmost respect for the club and its history,” Garton said. “The club has a tremendous record of winning trophies and I hope to contribute to winning more of them.”There is a strong playing squad and respected group of coaches at Edgbaston and I am particularly keen to work with Mark Robinson having known him for a long time.”I feel my best years as a player are ahead of me and I retain huge ambitions in the game. I can’t wait to get started ahead of the 2024 season.”Garton has joined Warwickshire with the option of playing first-class cricket, a format in which he has claimed 55 wickets in 26 appearances to date, including a dismissal with his first ball against Leeds/Bradford MCCU at Hove. However, it is his white-ball expertise that will be of greatest value to the club, given his extensive from stints in the IPL, Big Bash, SA20, and Abu Dhabi T10, alongside his domestic opportunities with Sussex and Southern Brave in the Hundred.Mark Robinson, Warwickshire’s first-team coach, was still in charge at Sussex when Garton first signed for the club in 2015.”When someone asks you would you be interested in signing a bowler who can bowl 85mph-plus, is one of the best fielders in the country and is a destructive batter, the answer wasn’t hard to give,” Robinson said.”I knew George as a young player working his way through the youth squads and he was always known as a player of huge potential.”As a left armer, he will give us variety in our attack, becoming another player who can change a game at any moment with either bat, ball or in the field.”George is very driven, hugely competitive and comes to us at the right time in a mental place determined to get back into the England team.”At the moment George wants to focus on white-ball cricket, but the door will always be open for him to return to the red ball format.”

‘The Rodri of Inter' – Fabio Capello warns Serie A side against selling star who 'makes the team go round' as ex-coach criticises Lautaro Martinez for public attack on Hakan Calhanoglu

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Calhanoglu's time at Inter has gone sour following the club's treble failure and Club World Cup elimination. After their last-16 clash against Fluminense, he was called out by Lautaro Martinez, who suggested the Turkey international leave if he does not want to be there. Having picked up an injury after their Champions League final defeat, Calhanoglu did not feature at the Club World Cup and was dropped from the squad for the loss.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 31-year-old Turkish midfielder has been linked with Galatasaray for quite some time, and even expressed a desire to join the club. However, Capello insists Inter would be wrong to let him go, comparing him to Manchester City star Rodri.

  • WHAT CAPELLO SAID

Addressing the war of words between the two players, Capello said: “These dynamics should be resolved in the locker room. Lautaro spoke as captain, as is right, but when you target a team-mate who is not present at that moment, then in my opinion, it is not good. Problems should always be resolved face-to-face. It is the only solution."

Asked if Calhanoglu should go, he added: "He is the Rodri of Inter. A beacon, an indispensable player for the Nerazzurri's game. He is part of those linchpins that make the team go round. It is logical that it will not be easy, if necessary, to replace someone like him."

West Indies include seven uncapped players for Australia Tests

West Indies have included as many as seven uncapped players in their squad for the daunting challenge of facing Australia in two Tests next month. Batter Zachary McCaskie, wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach, allrounders Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge and Kevin Sinclair along with quick bowlers Akeem Jordan and Shamar Joseph are among the 15 names which will be without Jason Holder who has opted to play T20 franchise cricket.Exciting young quick bowler Jayden Seales is also unavailable due to a shoulder injury while, like Holder, allrounder Kyle Mayers has opted out of the tour to play T20s.The majority of those in line for their maiden Test appearance featured in the recent West Indies A tour of South Africa which included three four-day matches. Offspinning allrounder Sinclair, who has played seven ODIs and six T20Is, impressed on that trip with a batting return of 44.00 alongside 12 wickets at 25.91 having also stood out on the earlier A tour to Bangladesh. In last season’s West Indies four-day championship he averaged 16.61 with the ball and was called up to the Test squad against India earlier this year.Related

Pace bowler Joseph, who only has five first-class games under his belt, was another to return from the A tour with good numbers having taken 12 wickets in two matches. Fellow quick Jordan, who was previously part of the Test squad to tour South Africa earlier this year, took nine wickets for the A side to follow 12 in three games against Bangladesh A.Hodge was the second-highest run-scorer in South Africa with 179 at 29.83 which followed a domestic return of 387 at 38.78 for Windward Islands. With nearly half the squad having no Test experience it will put even more onus on the group of senior players led by captain Kraigg Brathwaite who will have a new vice-captain in Alzarri Joseph. They are among just five players who were part of last season’s Test series in Australia alongside Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Joshua Da Silva and Kemar Roach.”The squad has been affected by the unavailability of some key players,” Desmond Haynes, West Indies’ lead selector, said. “However, we have had a very strong red-ball program being run over the past year, which has unearthed significant talent throughout the region. The selected players have passed each test given to them and must now be given the opportunity to showcase their skills in the test arena. Australia away is always a challenge, but we are confident in our team.”Darren Bravo, who has not played Test cricket since 2020 but averaged 55.75 in last season’s domestic four-day tournament and made a century in Australia on the 2015-16 tour, recently took time away from the game following his omission from the one-day squad to face England.West Indies have not won a Test in Australia since 1997, losing 14 of the 16 outings since. Due to the vagaries of the World Test Championship draw, they are visiting for the second consecutive summer. Last season they were beaten by 164 runs in Perth and 419 runs in Adelaide – their largest ever runs defeat against Australia. The Test squad will undertake a training camp in Adelaide from January 2-9 before facing a Cricket Australia XI in a four-day game at the Karen Rolton Oval from January 10-13 ahead of the first Test on the 17th.This season Adelaide reverts to a traditional red-ball Test with Brisbane hosting a day-night fixture beginning on January 25.The tour also includes three ODIs and three T20Is in early February with squads for those still to be named.West Indies Test squad for Australia 2023-24 series Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Alzarri Joseph, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Kirk McKenzie, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Justin Greaves, Joshua Da Silva, Akeem Jordan, Gudakesh Motie, Kemar Roach, Kevin Sinclair, Tevin Imlach, Shamar Joseph, Zachary McCaskie

Acheampong is highly rated at Stamford Bridge and is currently part of the squad Enzo Maresca took to the United States for the Club World Cup. He has made just one appearance, completing the whole game in the 3-0 victory over ES Tunis, and his versatility means he can operate both at right-back and in central defence. Coincidentally, the 19-year-old made his first Premier League start against Palace back in January, a few weeks after he had extended his contract until 2029.

Mendis replaces Shanaka as Sri Lanka's ODI captain; Hasaranga to lead in T20Is

Dasun Shanaka’s reign as Sri Lanka’s white-ball captain has come to an end as Sri Lanka’s new selection committee appointed Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga to lead the ODI and T20I sides, respectively. With Dimuth Karunaratne currently leading the Test side, this is the first time Sri Lanka have three different captains in the three formats.Shanaka first captained Sri Lanka in 2019, on the team’s first tour to Pakistan since the 2009 Lahore attack, but it was not until 2021 that he became their regular captain. Under him, Sri Lanka won 23 out of 41 ODIs and 22 out of 48 T20Is. The highlight of his tenure was the 2022 T20 Asia Cup victory in the UAE where Sri Lanka beat Pakistan in the final. Also notable were ODI series wins against South Africa and Australia, and a T20I series win against India, all at home. Shanaka also oversaw Sri Lanka’s unbeaten run through the 2023 World Cup Qualifier. But all these achievements were interspersed with poor showings in the 2021 and 2022 T20 World Cups as well as the 2023 ODI World Cup.However, it was his poor form with the bat, primarily in ODIs, that put him under the most scrutiny and made people question his place in the side. As such, it was widely expected that the new selection committee would look elsewhere in terms of the captaincy. His replacements, Mendis and Hasaranga, both have recent experience in leadership roles. Mendis is a former Under-19 captain and the current skipper of Dambulla Aura in the LPL. Midway through the 2023 ODI World Cup, he took over the reins from Shanaka when the latter got injured. Hasaranga, who is currently recovering from a hamstring surgery, had earlier this year led B-Love Kandy to their inaugural LPL title.Shanaka may still play a role in Sri Lanka’s white-ball set-ups after he was named in the preliminary squads for the limited-overs series against Zimbabwe at home in January.
