England seek the same again as West Indies go west in search of answers

England wouldn’t mind the one-way traffic continuing while WI will hope Lewis’ return adds impetus up top

Andrew Miller31-May-2025Big picture: England lay down their markerEdgbaston 2015 was the scene of England’s original white-ball reboot, when Eoin Morgan’s unfettered underachievers shed the reticence and blazed their way to a then-record total of 408 for 6 against New Zealand. Ten years later, the same venue produced a similar onslaught, an even 400 against West Indies, after a remarkable run of 30-plus scores from each of the top seven, with Jacob Bethell’s 82 from 53 balls the stand-out.There, for the time being, however, the parallels end. Because, while there was plenty in this latest performance for England to take pleasure in, the standard of the challenge wasn’t quite on a par with the Brendon McCullum-inspired Kiwis who had reached their first World Cup final only months earlier.West Indies have missed each of their last two ICC 50-over tournaments – the 2023 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy – and on Thursday’s evidence, it’s not hard to see why. A guileless bowling display bled into a batting performance that lacked body or substance, and had it not been for an unlikely top-score of 29 not out from Jayden Seales at No.11, this would have been the heaviest defeat in their once-proud ODI history. It doesn’t augur well for the remainder of the series, though England – it should be stressed – will not mind a jot if the one-way traffic continues. A win is a win is a win, especially when you have come into the contest off the back of seven consecutive defeats, their worst run since the dog days of 2001. That includes a Champions Trophy display so bad that they might have preferred the West Indies option of watching on helplessly from the sidelines, rather than the middle.Jamie Overton’s finger injury is the only lasting cloud from that contest – he has now been ruled out of the rest of the white-ball series after being diagnosed with a fracture. Saqib Mahmood’s impeccable command of line and length once again marked him out as a real asset in the powerplay, while Brydon Carse’s successful return from a gruesome toe injury was no less significant given his likely workload across formats this summer. In the batting stakes, Jamie Smith’s promotion to open proved an immediate success. He’ll face more challenging new-ball spells, no doubt, but the power and placement of his strokeplay brooked no argument. And talking of which, Harry Brook’s happy knack of rising to the responsibility of leadership shows no sign of abating. His sixth match in charge, and first in an official capacity, produced a fourth consecutive half-century, and it took a fine catch to dislodge him when well set.West Indies haven’t got a lot to write home about just yet. Gudakesh Motie was the pick of their bowlers at Edgbaston, though 7-0-39-0 is not exactly tearing up trees, while Seales’ 4 for 84 from nine overs at least provided some reward for his willingness to go to the well. Their batting, however, never got started. Maybe Evin Lewis’ recovery from a groin injury could offer some more impetus at the top. But, with the IPL’s latter stages having taken Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd out of contention for this campaign, it’s clear the issues that beset West Indies cricket aren’t simply related to individuals.Form guideEngland WLLLL
West Indies LWLWWIn the spotlight: Jacob Bethell and Shai HopeThe golden child was at it again on Thursday. Bethell has still not made a century in his brief professional career, but already he’s one of the most sought-after all-format players in England’s ranks. His Test-best 96 in New Zealand came amid a run of three half-centuries at No.3 that have stirred the pot ahead of India’s visit next month, while his cameo for IPL finalists RCB impressed no less a figure than Mr Aura himself, Virat Kohli. And now, an effortlessly competent 82 from 53 balls in only his tenth ODI. All of England’s new-look team are learning the format on the hoof. He’s got to grips with it as quickly as anyone.A lot has happened since that famous Headingley Test in 2017, when Shai Hope’s twin hundreds secured an extraordinary win against the head (straight after a shellacking at Edgbaston, no less). And if his role in Test cricket has fallen away in recent times, then it’s worth remembering it wasn’t so long ago that he was teaching England a few lessons in how to pace an ODI innings. In consecutive winters in 2023 and 2024, he produced superb centuries in Antigua. The former secured a memorable 326-run chase, the latter required the rarely-seen best of Liam Livingstone to outgun it. If anyone is to provide some traction to their batting, Hope must spring eternal.Brook enjoyed a good day out in his first match as captain•Getty ImagesTeam news: Overton out, Potts inThere was never any danger of wholesale changes from England just yet – their batting is in fine order, and Gujarat Titans’ IPL elimination removes any threat of Jos Buttler negotiating an early release to take on RCB in the final. Overton’s finger injury gives Matthew Potts a chance to feature after being named in every squad so far this summer, even though they may have been tempted by the point of difference offered by Luke Wood’s left-armers.England: 1 Jamie Smith, Ben Duckett, 3 Joe Root, 4 Harry Brook (capt), 5 Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Jacob Bethell, 7 Will Jacks, 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Matthew Potts, 11 Saqib MahmoodEvin Lewis was struck in the groin while batting on the eve of the first ODI, so assuming he’s recovered, he’s likely to slot back in at the top, potentially at the expense of Jewel Andrew, who nevertheless looked as competent as anyone in his brief stay at Edgbaston. Justin Greaves opened in Lewis’s absence, and may slip back down the order. Seales’ four expensive wickets may keep him ahead of Shamar Joseph.West Indies: (possible) 1 Brandon King, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Keacy Carty, 4 Shai Hope (capt & wk), 5 Amir Jangoo, 6 Justin Greaves, 7 Roston Chase, 8 Matthew Forde, 9 Alzarri Joseph, 10 Gudakesh Motie, 11 Jayden SealesPitch and conditions: Bright weather in prospectThe sun has returned in time for the weekend in Wales, so hot weather (by British standards) is in prospect. Cardiff is notorious for its short straight boundaries and deep pockets square of the wicket, so hit-the-deck, cross-seam bowling might prove fruitful through the middle overs.Stats and trivia West Indies haven’t won a bilateral ODI series in England since 2007. Their last such visit, in 2017, resulted in a 4-0 defeat. Root needs 42 runs to overtake Eoin Morgan as England’s leading scorer in ODIs. Another 84 will make him the first Englishman to 7000. Roston Chase is 47 runs short of 1000 in ODIs.Quotes”We know we’ve got to match that intensity and the performance from the other day, because it’s going to be a tough challenge. They’ve got a lot of match winners… Even though we played well, we still left a lot of things out there and we had good chats about that.
Will Jacks is not resting on his laurels after the opening ODI“It’s good when batsmen play out of their skin, but when you know you have a plan and you’ve not really given it a chance to work, that’s the most annoying thing.”
West Indies’ coach, Daren Sammy, was less impressed with his team’s performance.

Dodgers vs. Phillies Prediction, Odds, Probable Pitchers for Wednesday, July 10

The Philadelphia Phillies blew out the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first game of their three-game set on Tuesday night. The Dodgers have now lost the last two games by a combined score of 19-3. They'll attempt to bounce back on Wednesday night in Game 2 against the NL-leading Phillies.

Let's dive into everything you need to know to bet on tonight's game.

Dodgers vs. Phillies Players to Watch

Los Angeles Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani: It's not breaking news to anyone, but Shohei Ohtani is extremely good at baseball. His numbers have been even better than his usual high standard of late. Over the last 30 days, he's batting .330 with an OPS of 1.285. Eye-popping stuff from the MVP favorite.

Philadelphia Phillies

Cristopher Sanchez: The Phillies' starter needs to have a bounce back performance after allowing seven earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched in his latest start against the Chicago Cubs. He'll look to build on his 2.59 ERA on the year.

Dodgers vs. Phillies Prediction and Pick

I think this game is a true coin flip, so I'm going to back the Dodgers as +110 underdogs in Philadelphia. Gavin Stone (3.03 ERA) and Cristopher Sanchez (2.96 ERA) will make an intriguing pitching matchup, and there's little advantage either arm will have against the opposing offense.

Speaking of the two offenses. they enter today's game ranking sixth and seventh in OPS over the last 30 days. If you're able to put last night's performance out of your mind, these two teams have been extremely similar from a statistical standpoint over the last month.

So, if it's a 50-50 matchup for who will win, why not back the team that's set as a +110 underdog? That's exactly what I'm going to do.

Lamine Yamal says Real Madrid 'steal!' Barcelona sensation aims blunt dig at Clasico Rivals in cheeky exchange

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has ignited pre-Clasico controversy by claiming Real Madrid “steal” during a cheeky exchange on Twitch. The 18-year-old made the remark while chatting with streamer Ibai Llanos, comparing Madrid to a Kings League team known for benefiting from refereeing decisions. The comment comes just days before El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Yamal stirs controversy ahead of El Clasico

Barca sensation Yamal has sparked uproar in Spain after boldly accusing Madrid of benefiting from refereeing decisions, describing them as a team that “steals and complains.” The Barcelona prodigy made the explosive remark during a broadcast on Kings League, just days before Clasico against Los Blancos.

When asked by Ibai Llanos, owner of Kings League side Porcinos FC, whether his team reminded him of Real Madrid, Yamal didn’t hesitate. “Yes, of course, they steal, they complain…” he said, prompting laughter and disbelief from those on the stream. Llanos, a well-known Madrid supporter, immediately pushed back, asking, “Real Madrid steals?” To which Yamal doubled down, laughing nervously before reaffirming, “Well, let’s see, let’s see.”

The comment has since gone viral across Spanish media and social platforms. The timing, however, could not be more controversial, just days before Barca travel to the Bernabeu in a high-powered La Liga clash.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportInside Yamal’s cheeky exchange with Ibai Llanos

The exchange came as part of a lighthearted discussion between Yamal, Llanos, and Gerard Pique, the former Barca defender who co-founded the Kings League. Yamal, who co-owns the Kings League club La Capital FC, was discussing his upcoming fixture against Ibai’s team, Porcinos, when the topic of Real Madrid naturally arose.

Pique jokingly stoked the rivalry, while Yamal’s response carried a sting. “They steal, they complain, and they do things…” said the Barcelona winger, alluding to what many Barca fans have long believed, that Real Madrid receives favourable treatment from referees.

Despite his youthful tone and playful delivery, Yamal’s remarks have added extra spice to an already heated build-up to Clasico. His comments follow a long line of pre-Clasico mind games.

Focus on Clasico showdown at the Bernabeu

Barca will face Real Madrid at the Bernabeu this Sunday in a match that could decide early leadership of La Liga. Hansi Flick’s side currently trail Xabi Alonso’s men by two points, and a victory would see the Catalans leapfrog their rivals into first place.

Yamal’s comment, while made in jest, could add pressure ahead of one of the most-watched games in world football. The 18-year-old is expected to start on the right wing after producing a string of impressive performances this season, including eight direct goal contributions in just seven La Liga appearances.

Yamal’s self-assurance underlines his growing importance in Flick’s system, where his creativity, pace, and composure have made him one of the defining faces of Barcelona’s new era.

Madrid, meanwhile, have remained silent publicly, focusing on preparation under Alonso after a tough-win in the Champions League game against Juventus. The club’s fans, however, are expected to make their feelings known when Yamal steps onto the Bernabeu turf this weekend.

With tensions high, form stakes tight, and personal rivalries simmering, Clasico once again promises to deliver football, theatre, and controversy in equal measure, and Yamal finds himself right at the heart of it all.

AFPMbappe vs Yamal – the new Clasico duel

This weekend’s encounter will also renew the rivalry between two of football’s biggest generational stars, French superstar Kylian Mbappe and Yamal. The pair have already faced off eight times across club and international competitions, with Yamal holding an extraordinary record of seven wins to Mbappe’s single victory.

While Mbappe has outscored the Barcaa youngster in those meetings, eight goals to six, Yamal’s teams have consistently come out on top, including a memorable 5-2 Supercopa de Espana victory and a 3-2 Copa del Rey triumph. The French forward, now spearheading Madrid’s attack, will be eager to rewrite that record in front of home fans.

Yamal’s form heading into the Clasico has been impressive despite Barcelona’s mixed start to the campaign. With three goals and eight assists already this season, he continues to showcase the balance between flair and maturity that has made him Europe’s most exciting teenager. His performances have not only drawn praise from Flick but also earned him a runner-up finish in the 2025 Ballon d’Or at just 18 years old.

Ballon d'Or 2025: Did Mohamed Salah deserve the award ahead of Ousmane Dembele?

Ousmane Dembele couldn’t hold back his emotions as he thanked his family after winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or. His story is one of resilience. A star boy who threatened to end in failure, surrounded by injury struggles and a Barcelona move which simply never clicked. But ultimately a player who now sits atop football’s throne after undergoing his very own remontada at Paris Saint-Germain.

For all the opinions about those who missed out on the award, it should not take away from the Frenchman’s own story. No one could have foreseen the genius of Luis Enrique’s new false nine other than the PSG boss himself. Dembele became reborn. A player who simply did not score enough became a player who could not stop doing so.

By the time the final whistle sounded in PSG’s 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final, Dembele had scored 35 goals and assisted another 16 in all competitions, with seven of those contributions coming in the knockout stage of Europe’s elite competition. There aren’t many who enjoyed a better season than the former Barcelona man. France Football believes that not a single player did, in fact.

Ballon d'Or 2025 Final Rankings

Where did the 30 nominees finish?

By
Charlie Smith

Sep 23, 2025

Lamine Yamal was forced to settle for second place. He’s the star boy that Dembele was and so much more, but he’s been forced to wait before his potential era of dominance commences. Vitinha, meanwhile, surprised many by placing third. The classy midfielder played a key role alongside Dembele in PSG’s treble last season and has earned his place among the world’s best from Wolverhampton Wanderers failure years prior.

And then there’s Mohamed Salah in fourth. Yes, fourth. The Egyptian, who missed out on nomination altogether last season, failed to even make the podium following a year that many believe was worthy of winning the award itself.

Why Salah was robbed of the Ballon d'Or

There aren’t many players who enjoyed a better season than Dembele, as mentioned, but Salah did. The Egyptian created history in the Premier League with more goal involvements than any other player in the history of a 38-game season and even matched the record set by Alan Shearer, who needed 42 games. Simply put, he was unstoppable.

The Ballon d’Or’s social media revealed the criteria for winning the award before the ceremony, stating that individual performances, decisive and impressive character, team performances and achievements, class and fair play would decide the rankings.

Based on the above metrics, it feels absurd that Salah finished outside the top three. The only player close to matching him was indeed Dembele, who deserved to be neck and neck with the Egyptian, not miles beyond him.

Where Salah lost Ballon d'Or votes

Ultimately, Salah will look back on Liverpool vs PSG as the turning point for the Ballon d’Or. Once again, rightly or wrongly, the Champions League took precedence over anything else in the minds of France Football. One penalty shootout between two of the world’s best, who just happened to meet in the last 16, arguably played a large part in Dembele’s eventual victory and Salah’s snub.

That’s where the award is slightly flawed. It’s human nature to lean towards recency, but those voting for the Ballon d’Or winner simply must consider the season as a whole rather than the final months before the ceremony. Salah was strolling towards his throne in the first-half of the campaign, having recorded 30 goal involvements in the Premier League by the time that January arrived.

Dembele, meanwhile, was yet to get going. The forward had recorded 13 league goal involvements and had found the back of the net just eight times. It was far from Ballon d’Or-worthy. We now know, of course, that Enrique’s genius soon played a part and the Frenchman’s best was unlocked, but it was Salah who looked on course for the famous award.

By no means did the Liverpool man bring his form to a sudden halt, either – adding 17 more goal involvements to his name before the Premier League campaign came to an end. Alas, somewhere along the way, the glimmer of PSG’s Champions League trophy blinded France Football to the history that Salah had created.

PSG lift the Champions League.

For now, Liverpool’s Egyptian King is forced to wait for his crowing moment on football’s biggest stage. Whether his time will come at all is now the big question. If that does not arrive, then Salah will no doubt join the likes of Andres Iniesta and Thierry Henry as one of the greatest players to somehow miss out on the award.

He's a "cheat code": Man City sold bigger talent than O’Reilly for £300k

In recent seasons, Manchester City’s academy has become one of the most prominent in Europe. They have produced many fantastic players, some of whom still ply their trade at the Etihad Stadium, and others who have moved on to pastures new.

One of the best academy graduates currently in the City squad would have to be Phil Foden. Their number 47 has cemented himself as one of the key players in Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad.

On the flip side, the Citizens let the likes of Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers leave in the last few years, both of whom are now full England internationals.

Another City academy graduate, Nico O’Reilly, could be about to make his Three Lions debut.

Why O’Reilly is in the England squad

It has been an astronomical rise to the top for 20-year-old City starlet O’Reilly. After becoming an established player in their first-team fold last season, Thomas Tuchel has taken note of his performances and drafted him into his latest England squad.

The Manchester-born City star is a versatile player and has been something of a Swiss army knife for Guardiola. He’s played 30 first-team games for his boyhood club, which have come all over the pitch.

Most often, O’Reilly has played as a left-back, but he’s played as a centre-back, right across the midfield, and even as a centre-forward.

That versatility has been hugely beneficial for City’s Spanish boss. He can deploy O’Reilly almost anywhere and get a good performance in whichever role he plays. This season, the youngster has played nine games, with seven of those appearances coming at left-back.

He even set up Erling Haaland’s second goal away to Monaco from that position.

One person who O’Reilly has impressed this season is BBC Sport tactical analyst Umir Irfan. He said that the versatile star “has been brilliant for City and a big part of their solidity in recent weeks,” which is high praise indeed.

As well as O’Reilly has performed for City, he is arguably not even their biggest talent at full-back to come from the academy in recent years.

City’s ex-academy star who’s better than O’Reilly

O’Reilly isn’t the only top prospect City have produced at full-back in recent years. Rico Lewis has also broken into Guardiola’s squad, and, like his fellow academy graduate, can operate in midfield, as Guardiola likes his full-backs to do.

Yet, one player of a vastly different profile, who City may wish they had kept hold of, is Liverpool wing-back Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutchman was once in City’s academy himself, but was sold to Celtic for just £300k back in 2019.

In hindsight, this wasn’t the best decision City have made over the years. Now plying his trade at Anfield, Frimpong cost their Premier League rivals £29.5m, following some exceptional seasons at Bayer Leverkusen.

He’s already seven games into his Liverpool career and scored on his debut in the Community Shield against Crystal Palace.

He is also a different type of full-back to O’Reilly. Operating as a winger at times with the ball, Frimpong is rapid down the right flank and has a deadly cross in his arsenal.

That is why football scout Antonio Mango described him as a “cheat code.”

In Leverkusen’s remarkable invincible season of 2023/24, the Dutchman was one of their best players. Operating at wing-back, the 24-year-old scored 14 times and assisted 12 in 47 games.

His underlying stats were incredible, too. With less defensive responsibility, he ranked in the top 13% for key passes amongst Bundesliga full-backs in the top flight, with 1.8 per 90 minutes.

O’Reilly has certainly made an excellent start to his career. Yet, with Frimpong’s contribution to a memorable Leverkusen season in 2023/24, and his major move to Liverpool this summer, it is easy to see how he could be considered a bigger talent.

Losing a player of this quality might sting City fans now. He was an academy star who was let go for a cheap price, and would have brought something unique to their current squad.

Arteta gifted "massive boost" alongside Saliba deal as Arsenal update emerges

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has welcomed the official announcement of William Saliba’s new deal, but he’s since been given another “massive boost”, according to a former club chief.

William Saliba commits future to Arsenal after rejecting Real Madrid

News first emerged last week that Saliba agreed to pen a contract extension which will keep him at the club until 2030, with new sporting director Andrea Berta described as key to the move.

The Italian took a “firm grasp” of negotiations to tie Saliba down since replacing Edu Gaspar in March (Charles Watts), and somehow found time to regularly speak with his representatives amid an extremely busy first summer window at the Emirates.

Saliba’s terms were due to expire in 2027, which was a major worry for Arsenal as Real Madrid lingered in the background.

The former Saint-Étienne sensation’s partnership with Gabriel has been imperative to Arsenal’s title challenges since the beginning of 2022/2023, and they’re widely considered to be Europe’s best centre-back pairing.

Arsenal have conceded the fewest Premier League goals of any top flight side in each of the last two campaigns, and that is largely down to Arteta’s star defensive duo.

It is believed that Saliba and Gabriel made a summer pact to remain at Arsenal and challenge for major silverware, with reliable club insider ‘HandOfArsenal’ detailing that the former sent a clear message to Real at that time.

When Los Blancos approached him, Saliba was “direct” in telling Xabi Alonso’s side that he wanted to stay in North London, and the France international has now put his money where his mouth is.

With Saliba now secured, Berta’s next big task is agreeing a new contract with star winger Bukayo Saka.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Saka’s potential extension is Arsenal’s next priority after Saliba, and the club are increasingly optimistic about getting it over the line soon.

Other reports claim that the England international stands to earn around £250,000-per-week from his fresh terms, maybe more, and they could reach a full agreement by Christmas if all goes to plan (Football Transfers).

Arsenal gifted "massive boost" alongside Saliba deal after Bukayo Saka update

Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected in the beautiful game, has shared what he’s heard about Saka and the prospect of a new Arsenal deal — claiming that the Gunners have been handed a big piece of encouragement.

Brown says that Saka is happy to sign an extension and is delighted with life at Arsenal, with there being no concerns about his long-term future.

Reaching a quick agreement with Saka right after Saliba would come as a serious statement of intent by Berta, with Arteta under pressure to deliver trophies after many ‘close but no cigar’ seasons at N5.

Arsenal must secure Bukayo Saka deal as non-negotiable

The 24-year-old, valued at a staggering £131 million by Transfermarkt, is truly priceless.

However, if his contract is allowed to tick down towards expiry in 2027, Berta would be faced with his toughest decision yet.

His 71 goals and 71 assists in 268 appearances for Arsenal tell just half the story, with Saka’s world-class attacking intent in one-v-one situations, close control, pace and creativity seen as crucial to the way Arteta wants to play.

Arsenal will be ever-reliant on Saka on the right-hand side, especially with summer signing Noni Madueke out for several weeks, but Arteta will be mindful of the player’s fitness considering he’s only just back from a hamstring injury.

Saka also showed off a bloodied sock after their 2-1 win over Newcastle, courtesy of some rough treatment from the Magpies — which perfectly emphasises just how feared he is throughout the Premier League.

Rooney disagrees with Gerrard's "disrespectful" England playing days comments

Wayne Rooney admits club rivalries did get in the way of success for England’s ‘golden generation’ but disagrees with Steven Gerrard’s suggestion that they were “egotistical losers”.

Earlier this week, former Three Lions team-mate Steven Gerrard said the egos of England’s players stopped them from achieving success.

Rooney disagrees with Gerrard on England comments

But Rooney, who scored 53 goals in 120 England appearances, said he “had no issues” with the other players and believed the team still worked hard for each other but just could not “get over the line” in major tournaments. On his BBC podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, he said:

On Rio Ferdinand’s podcast, Gerrard also admitted he “hated” England duty due to being in the hotel for long periods of time. Rooney also agreed with Gerrard that it was tough at times.

He added: “I seen his comments about going up and having like seven hours in his room and stuff. That was tough at times because you’re just lying in bed and watching TV and have food and then go to sleep so a few players did that.

“I tried to keep myself busy, I’d be always in the hotel, I’d been in the massage room, the physio room trying to keep yourself busy.”

From Ibrox: Manager who shares agent with Lennon Miller open to Rangers move

Rangers chiefs have been handed a boost in their search for a new manager to take the Ibrox hotseat.

Latest Rangers manager news

So far, one of the leading candidates to head to Ibrox has been former boss Steven Gerrard. The Liverpool legend has been out of a coaching role since January, when he left Al-Ettifaq and has already held positive talks with Rangers about a return.

Having ended Celtic’s reign the last time that he stepped foot in Scottish football, his appointment would certainly make sense as the Gers aim for a repeat. What’s more, the Liverpool legend, himself, recently admitted that he has “unfinished” business in management after failing in Saudi Arabia and in the Premier League with Aston Villa.

That said, Gerrard isn’t the only candidate on Rangers’ list. The Gers have also been linked with former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl and former Everton manager Sean Dyche.

It’s a decision that the 49ers cannot afford to get wrong after Martin’s failure and that’s why appointing an option far closer to home may well be their answer to bouncing back.

Derek McInnes now open to Rangers job

As reported by GiveMeSport, Derek McInnes is now open to joining Rangers and has a release clause in his current Hearts deal which should make it far easier for the Gers to seal any potential deal. The talented manager has enjoyed an excellent start to the season with Hearts and even sits top of the Scottish Premiership, unbeaten and two points ahead of Celtic.

After such a strong start at Hearts, the big concern for Rangers would have been convincing McInnes to leave, but reports suggest that he is keen on the job.

His appointment would also be an instant contrast to the route that the 49ers went down to welcome Martin. Instead of turning towards a sacked Premier League manager, the Gers would be welcoming a manager who knows the Scottish Premiership better than most of their other candidates and made history for Hearts last month with their first Ibrox win since 2014.

Interestingly, McInnes is represented by the same agency – Arena Sports Management – as Lennon Miller, after the Gers spent months chasing Miller only to miss out to Udinese. Perhaps the link between the two could create a path for the teenager to return to Scotland further down the line.

Looking at their options, both Gerrard and McInnes are the standouts for Rangers, who should make their decision before the return of domestic football from the international break.
