PSG player ratings vs Angers: Kylian Mbappe masterful & Lionel Messi pulls the strings as Ligue 1 leaders squeeze past strugglers

Kylian Mbappe bagged two first-half goals as Paris Saint-Germain put away Angers and extend their Ligue 1 lead to 11 points.

Kylian Mbappe bagged a brace and Lionel Messi turned in a typically classy performance as PSG saw off Angers with a 2-1 win.

Mbappe opened the scoring inside 10 minutes, bundling Juan Bernat's cross over the line. He added a second shortly after, latching on to a Messi through ball before rounding Paul Bernardoni and finishing into an empty net.

The Parisians had some defending to do in the second half, as the home side pushed to make things interesting. And Angers were rewarded for their pressure, as Sada Thioub grabbed a goal in the 89th minute.

But they couldn't grab an equaliser, and PSG survived any late nerves to secure what became a slightly nervy win.

GOAL rates PSG's players from Stade Raymond Kopa…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Gianluigi Donnarumma (6/10):

Misjudged the cross that led to Angers' goal. Was otherwise untroubled.

Marquinhos (6/10):

Took care of most of his defensive work without fuss.

Sergio Ramos (6/10):

Won a few key headers, but was caught out of position as Angers scored.

Danilo Pereira (6/10):

Still not entirely natural as a centre-back. Didn't do anything wrong, though.

AdvertisementMidfield

Achraf Hakimi (7/10):

Much improved after a few poor showings. Dangerous in the attack.

Carlo Soler (5/10):

Didn't seem to do much. Deservedly subbed after an hour.

Fabian Ruiz (7/10):

Played as the deepest-lying midfielder of PSG's three. Looked more than comfortable in the role.

Vitinha (5/10):

Had his best game in a PSG shirt last time out with a goal and an assist. Was far less impactful here.

Juan Bernat (7/10):

Impressive in a rare start. Grabbed himself an assist with a nice cross to Mbappe.

Attack

Lionel Messi (8/10):

Assisted Mbappe with a sublime through ball. Lots of energetic runs and fine passes. Near his best.

Kylian Mbappe (8/10):

Opened the scoring with an awkward finish. Grabbed his second with a lovely piece of skill.

GettySubs & Manager

Marco Verratti (6/10):

Very silky, kept the ball moving, a welcome return from a hamstring issue.

E.C. Bitshiabu (6/10):

A late introduction to shore things up after Angers scored.

Warren Zaire-Emery (N/A):

On the pitch for six minutes. Must wonder what else he has to do to get in the team more.

Christophe Galtier (7/10):

Benched Verratti but went for an otherwise as expected lineup. Messi and Mbappe did most of the attacking stuff, and the league leaders were mostly comfortable. It got a bit nervy with a late Angers goal, but PSG did enough on the day.

Austin, Mourinho & the Premier League's funniest rants

Sometimes, the post-match press conferences and interviews are just as entertaining as the games themselves – especially if they're heated!

The Premier League has never been short of drama both on and off the pitch, and players and managers can get colourful with their wording in the aftermath of an eventful game.

Following Charlie Austin's recent condemnation of Premier League referees after Southampton's draw with Watford, Goal rounds up some of the most memorable tirades delivered by both footballers and their coaches…

Charlie Austin, referees rant | 2018-19

In a heated tirade, Southampton striker Austin demanded the Premier League introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) following a “joke” decision that cost the Saints two points against Watford in their 1-1 draw.

“It’s ridiculous, they shouldn’t be in the game,” he said in his post-match interview. “We scored a perfectly good goal that was ruled out for offside. The officials cost us two points. They said it was offside, that is a joke.

"Sure there are many positives, we worked hard, we deserved three points and we would have got that had we not been let down by the official."

Jose Mourinho, "respect" rant | 2018-19

Following a 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at home in the league, Mourinho heatedly defended his legacy in England – and walked out of the post-match press conference to stunned reporters, demanding respect.

"Just to finish. Do you know what was the result? 3-0. 3-0. Do you know what this mean? 3-0," he fired.

"But it also means three Premierships, and I have won more Premierships alone than the other 19 managers together. Three for me and two for them. Respect! Respect! Respect, man! Respect! Respect! Respect!"

Kevin Keegan vs Fergie rant | 1995-96

In the 1995-96 season, Manchester United and Newcastle were involved in a bitter title race – and Kevin Keegan lost his temper on television responding to comments made by Alex Ferguson that some teams wouldn't try as hard to earn points against the Magpies than they would with the Red Devils.

He burst out: "I've kept really quiet but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimations when he said that. We have not resorted to that. You can tell him now, we're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something.

"And I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it."

Ron Atkinson, "silly machines" rant | 1995-96

When pundit Richard Keys quizzed Coventry manager Ron Atkinson on his side's poor form in 1996, he blased accusations that his side were performing poorly.

"I'm sorry, you can sit there and play with all your silly machines as much as you like," Atkinson raged. "If the boys play badly I'll whip 'em, but I ain't whipping them for that. Who was the man of the match award?"

    "Dave Beasant," said Keys.

"Oh, sorry, so he must not have played that bad then," Atkinson continued. "Thanks very much, lads. Goodnight."

Miedema, Kerr and the Women's Super League team of the season

The league's two top goal-scorers feature in Goal's best XI for the 2020-21 campaign, which saw Chelsea retain their title

Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal dominate Goal's Women's Super League team of the season after once again locking out the top three spots in the league, all clinching Women's Champions League football for next season as a result.

The Blues clinched the title for a second successive year, their fourth title overall, while City came second for the fifth time in six years – the only exception being the 2016 season, when they won the division.

Manchester United, who topped the table at Christmas but just missed out on the European spots in the end, are the only other club represented in this XI, telling of the 15-point gap between the top four and the rest of the league.

GettyGK | Ellie Roebuck

Only Ann-Katrin Berger kept more clean sheets this campaign than Man City's Ellie Roebuck, the 21-year-old having another excellent year after also making Goal's 2019-20 team of the season.

That Golden Glove award would have likely been shared too, had Roebuck not missed the final day of the season through injury.

She has a strong defence in front of her to help, but a save percentage of 68% – the fourth highest of any goalkeeper playing more than 10 WSL games – shows the England international more than plays her part, too.

“The sky's the limit for Ellie," head coach Gareth Taylor said earlier this season. “She’s a great girl to work with, really mature for her age, enjoys the challenge and gets the bit between her teeth."

AdvertisementGettyRB | Ona Batlle

After signing from Levante in the summer, Ona Batlle has quickly endeared herself to Manchester United fans this season with performances that typify the modern day full-back.

As well as being an excellent attacking threat, playing at times in an inverted full-back role that sees her really get at teams in the final third, the Spaniard has shown just what a brilliant one-v-one defender she can be.

Despite playing for a team that are one of the strongest in the league, she is among the top five when it comes to tackles won this year. At 21 years old, she will only get better, too.

GettyCB | Magdalena Eriksson

To understand how good Magdalena Eriksson is, and how important she is to her team, one only has to look at how Chelsea have performed without her this season.

The Blues' captain is the leader of this title-winning side and whole team looks more assured when she is on the pitch, such is her status as one of the best centre-backs in Europe and, arguably, the best in the WSL.

That Emma Hayes touted her as a future Chelsea manager earlier this season tells you everything you need to know about her character and footballing intelligence.

GettyCB | Alex Greenwood

When Alex Greenwood returned to the WSL in the summer, most expected her to renew a competition for places that she is familiar with when playing for England, battling with Demi Stokes for the starting left-back spot at City.

As the season transpired, Greenwood instead spent most of it as a centre-back – and she has thrived, having the best individual season of her career to date.

Her composure in possession has been essential for the way City play, while her set-piece deliveries have been problematic for every team in the league. Arsenal's Katie McCabe was the only defender to create more chances all season.

Ronaldo, Neymar & the most expensive transfers in history

Cristiano Ronaldo has joined Juventus for €100 million, so where does the forward rank on the list of the biggest deals of all time?

Given David Beckham was one of the most marketable sporting stars on the planet, Real Madrid could not believe their luck when Manchester United told them they could have the England captain in 2003 for €37.5m.

Of course, former Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson wanted rid of Beckham, feeling that the midfielder had become more of a celebrity than a footballer, but it still proved a shrewd move by Los Blancos, who made a fortune in sponsorhip and shirt sales off, as well as winning La Liga in the style icon's final season at the Santiago Bernabeu, in 2006-07.

AdvertisementGetty100Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain | €38m

Many Liverpool fans wondered why manager Jurgen Klopp elected to spend €38m on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of the 207-18 season when it was clear that there was a great need to strengthen the Reds' defence.

However, whereas it was initially thought that the versatile winger would prove little more than a valuable squad player, Oxlade-Chamberlain now looks set to become a key man at Anfield thanks to his impressive performances, both on the wing and in midfield, and the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

Attila Kisbenedek99Andre Silva | €38m

It is easy to understand why AC Milan felt compelled to sign Andre Silva for €38m as part of their 2017 summer spending spree. The young striker had impressed in the Champions League for Porto, while Cristiano Ronaldo had labelled him the heir to his throne within the Portuguse national team.

However, while Silva has had no issues scoring in the Europa League, he has thus far struggled horribly in Serie A and there is even talk that Ronaldo now wants Real Madrid to sign his compatriot, so that he can take the No.9 under his wing at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Getty Images98Mats Hummels | €38m

Having come through the youth-team ranks at Bayern Munich only to fail to force his way into the first team, Mats Hummels departed for Borussia Dortmund in 2009, after a successful loan season at Signal Iduna Park.

However, the Bavarians rectified their mistake seven years later by returning to their favourite super-market with €38m in the wallet to re-sign the defender, who, in spite of some fitness and form issues, remains one of the game's top centre-halves.

TABELA
> Veja tabela e simulador do Paulistão clicando aqui

Hailstorm puts victory hopes on ice at Derby

ScorecardJacques Rudolph said he had never played in colder conditions than at Derby•Getty Images

Lingering hopes of a positive outcome to Derbyshire’s match against Glamorgan at Derby were not so much put on ice as frozen out by a spectacular storm midway through the final afternoon.A violent hailstorm broke over the ground shortly after 2.25pm and turned the outfield white, leaving conditions too wet for the match to resume.By that stage, there was little chance of anything other than a draw with Glamorgan 87 for 2 in their second innings, a lead of 119, with Jacques Rudolph and Chris Cooke making sure there was no late panic in the visiting dressing room.Even before the start of the fourth day, both teams were struggling to get into a position from which they could have exerted enough pressure to force victory with Derbyshire 46 behind with one wicket intact.Tom Poynton and Andy Carter extended their partnership to 56 in nine overs and Derbyshire were only five away from a fourth batting point when Carter got a steepling leading edge off Michael Hogan.Carter’s career-best 39 had helped reduce the deficit to 32 so Derbyshire still entertained slim hopes if they could strike early. The lead had increased by 26 when James Kettleborough made his second misjudgment of the match with the same result, off stump knocked back offering no shot, and Will Bragg followed his first-day century with another lbw dismissal to Wes Durston’s off-spin.At lunch, Glamorgan were 79 ahead and Rudolph and Cooke quietly eased the game towards the draw that was confirmed when hailstones the size of marbles descended on the ground. In all, 138 overs were lost to weather of varying shades of winter and spoiled what Derbyshire’s elite performance director Graeme Welch believes could have been a very good game.”It’s not very often you see snow nearly at the start of May and Jacques Rudolph said it was the coldest he’s ever played in.”I think they probably got 50 or 60 runs too many in the first innings but we did well to get what we did with Andy Carter smacking it around and I think if the weather hadn’t intervened, it would have been a very good game on a very good cricket pitch.”For Hogan, who finished with four wickets, it was a case of what might have been. “It’s a shame because the weather ruined a good game of cricket.”If we had a full four days of play, it would have been a really nice game. Given our performance last week, we had some things to take care of and prove that was just a mishap and they probably thought they might be able to knock us over.”So we took it as a way to exorcise some demons.”

Likeable Notts have bowling to find for title challenge

Last season
IN: Will Gidman (Gloucestershire), Greg Smith (Leicestershire)
OUT: Phil Jaques (retired), Andre Adams (Hampshire), Ajmal Shahzad (Sussex)
OVERSEAS: Vernon Philander, Ben Hilfenhaus, Darren Sammy2014 in a nutshell
Considering their reputation as one of the most powerful counties in the land, 2014 was a disappointment for Nottinghamshire. Fourth place in the Championship sounds respectable enough, but the manner of their defeat in the final match at Trent Bridge, as Yorkshire trounced them to win the title, emphasized the gulf that remained between themselves and the top sides. Their failure to maintain a Championship challenge was primarily due to an inability to bowl sides out twice – that, too, in the micro climate of Trent Bridge which assists seam and swing bowlers like no other venue. Notts were strongly fancied in the NatWest Blast, with good reason, only for defeat against Hampshire at Trent Bridge to extend their run of successive quarter-final reverses to four.2015 prospects
Notts’ ambition has been clear in a winter of sizeable recruitment. Vernon Philander and Ben Hilfenhaus are two international bowlers who can be expected to beef up their pace bowling ranks, and looking closer to home they would benefit considerably if Andy Carter could have an injury-free season. Will Gidman can also help to cover for the departure of Andre Adams. Brendan Taylor has swopped Zimbabwe for a Kolpak deal and adds to huge competition for places in the middle order. More problematic are the injuries to Jake Libby and Michael Lumb which will see both absent in early season and ensure traditional Notts uncertainty at the top of the order. Steven Mullaney and Greg Smith – another recruit, this time from Leicestershire – will vie for the job, presumably alongside Alex Hales, who missed out on an IPL deal. Notts’ lack of a specialist spinner remains a frailty, but surely they have the talent to end that T20 quarter-final hoodoo. Power brokers
Mick Newell, who now combines his role as Notts director of cricket with that as an England selector, will be anxious to bring some silverware to Trent Bridge as well as banishing Notts’ reputation as a buying club: his call for regional academies (with Notts to the fore obviously) will not have gone down overly well with fans at neighbouring Derbyshire and Leicestershire. Chris Read’s firefighting with the bat as Notts’ Championship catch-up is forever watchable, and James Taylor can advance his claims as one of the most astute leaders of the game in the limited-overs formats – when not on England duty.Key player
For Gloucestershire to lose both Gidman brothers at the same time was a sizeable blow – and one of them – Will, three years younger than Alex, at 30, and slightly less celebrated – has made his way to Trent Bridge. Will Gidman has been a late developer, his medium-paced bowling developing such a threat that, at a relatively late stage of his career, he boasts the unusual record of 194 wickets at 22 apiece. Trent Bridge would seem ideally suited to him – an ideal replacement perhaps for Adams – but it remains to be seen whether he can workover Division One batsmen in quite the same manner.Bright young thing
Jake Libby had Championship purists purring when he made a carefully-assembled hundred on Championship debut against Sussex at Trent Bridge as the 2014 season drew to a close. His unflappable temperament and decent technique against a Sussex attack pushing for a third-placed finish brought hopes that the young Cornishman would become the reliable opening batsman Notts need. A ruptured cruciate ligament playing grade cricket in Tasmania was a cruel blow, but he will hope for opportunities to restate his qualities in the final two months of the Championship season.ESPNcricinfo verdict
There is so much to like about Notts. Trent Bridge is the model of how cricket in England should be and the ability to create a pleasurable viewing experience, allied to an entertaining side, made them one of places to watch T20 cricket in 2014. To falter at the quarter-finals for the fourth successive summer, though, was a desperate disappointment for a side packed with destructive batsmen, but often a little lacking with the ball. Oh, for a young Harold Larwood to pop into an Academy session. For that reason, unless the Philander/Hilfenhaus combo has a dramatic effect and Gidman chips in, they may fade yet again in the title race.Bet365 odds: Championship Div 1: 5-1; NatWest Blast: 6-1; Royal London Cup: 7-1

– A gente fica bastante limitado.

Sri Lanka's fringe players aim to seize opportunity

After five days of skills training, Sri Lanka embark on a tour of India which they feel is about as difficult a limited-overs assignment as a team could undertake.

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-Oct-2014Victory is almost always the goal in sporting endeavour, but missing key players, and pulled in for a surprise series out of the cold, this Sri Lanka team says they have instead set their sights on the “bigger picture”.The team had been focusing on fitness and strength work since mid-September, with a view to being ready for cricket by November 26, when the ODIs against England are scheduled to begin. But their board jumped in to fill a newly-vacant gap in India’s calendar, and the players had little choice but to follow the suits’ directives. After five days of skills training, they embark on a tour of India which they feel is about as difficult a limited-overs assignment as a team could undertake.”A tour of India is a major challenge for any team and for any captain,” coach Marvan Atapattu said. “To put huge pressure on ourselves to win is not that wise, at this stage. We know that if everyone is fit, that our World Cup team will be different. So with that in mind, we’ll be thinking about who can be a part of the team going forward, and what individual players can get out of it.”We play every game to win, but with that, we’re also looking at the bigger picture. Like what can we expect from the players who are taking part? What is their ability? We have about 20 matches between now and the World Cup. That’s about the number of ODI games some teams plays in a year. The challenge is to peak at the right time. Because we have 20 matches to go, we shouldn’t become too concerned just yet.”Sri Lanka’s frontline bowlers are the major absentees from this tour. Lasith Malinga is recovering from ankle surgery. Rangana Herath, who has had a phenomenal workload this year, is being rested to safeguard his troublesome knees. Ajantha Mendis is being hidden from view, to preserve what remains of his mystery and Sachithra Senanayake is attempting to fight his way back from a ban.The likes of Suraj Randiv, Seekkuge Prasanna, Lahiru Gamage and Chaturanga de Silva now have the chance to make a World Cup case in their absence, and it is these fringe players who have the most to gain from the series, Atapattu says.”We’re missing our two best bowlers in Rangana and Lasith, but it’s a good opportunity to see what the others can do. Not just for the bowlers but the batsmen as well – it’s a chance for a lot of them to nail down a permanent place in the team.”Among the batsmen who are in competition for World Cup places are Kusal Perera and Upul Tharanga. Both have been tried in the opening position, opposite Tillakaratne Dilshan, this year, without either making a strong claim. Angelo Mathews said the team was looking to firm up a top-order combination this year, and that Perera and Tharanga would be under the microscope.”The opening slot is something we’ll definitely look at. That’s why we’re taking three openers on this tour. We need to look at Upul and Kusal. The preparation is not 100%, but we’ll try and get our combinations right. That’s what we are looking to get out of this tour. There are a few young players, so we will give them opportunities.”
