Tottenham ‘serious’ about signing Pellegrini

According to a report by Calciomercato, as written in their headline, Tottenham Hotspur are ‘serious’ about signing Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini this summer with the club also ‘fast approaching’.

The Lowdown: Paratici turns to Italy…

Pellegrini is just one of the many Italian stars linked with a move to Spurs ever since the Lilywhites appointed new managing director of football Fabio Paratici.

The likes of Lorenzo Insigne, Domenico Berardi and Manuel Locatelli have also been mentioned as well as Serie A legend Leonardo Bonucci.

Now, Calciomercato bring the latest as Spurs eye yet another Azzurri international.

The Latest: Spurs ‘serious’ about signing Pellegrini…

Tottenham are ‘serious’ about signing Pellegrini this summer amid his current contract dispute with Roma.

The 25-year-old’s deal is set to expire in 2022 as it stands with former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, now manager of Roma, speaking to the player in ‘recent days’ over his situation.

While Pellegrini’s first choice would be to remain at the Stadio Olimpico for the time being, Calciomercato says to ‘beware’ of interested clubs with the interest of Spurs ‘confirmed’.

They say Tottenham and Paratici are ‘fast approaching’ for the player but unwilling to pay his €30 million (£25.7m) release clause which expires in under 10 days.

The Verdict: Great option for Spurs…

Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ by Roma legend and World Cup winner Francesco Totti, the dynamic ace could certainly provide a real element of attacking threat in Tottenham’s midfield.

Scoring seven goals and assisting six others in 30 Serie A starts over 2020/2021 (WhoScored), Pellegrini also averaged more shots on goal per 90 (2.1) than any Tottenham player last season bar Harry Kane (3.9).

Indeed, he also reigns superior over almost every Spurs man in terms of key passes per 90 (1.9) apart from Son Heung-min (2) – marking him out as a real one to watch out for this summer.

Pakistan fast bowler Umar Gul has been ruled out for the remainder of the Asia Cup because of a rib cartilage injury. He has been advised two weeks rest, and Abdur Rauf takes his place in the squad.”Gul has been advised complete rest for at least two weeks and this is a big setback for us as he is one of our main bowler’s,” Salahuddin Ahmed, a Pakistan selector, told .Gul sustained the injury during Pakistan’s group match against India on Thursday. He pulled up in his first over and, despite receiving some treatment, had to leave the field after bowling only 1.2 overs. His departure left Pakistan’s bowling attack severely depleted and India chased down their target of 300 with 47 balls to spare.”I don’t know exactly what it is but I felt pain after just a few balls and it became unbearable,” Gul said. Abdur Rauf, the fast bowler who made his debut against Zimbabwe in February, is likely to be named as a replacement. Ex-Leeds United star pleased with expected Jack Harrison deal

Leeds United signing Jack Harrison permanently from Manchester City is a “no-brainer”, former Whites midfielder David Norris has told Football FanCast.

The 24-year-old has spent the last three seasons on loan at Elland Road, initially joining Marcelo Bielsa’s side back in 2018.

He now looks set to join them on a permanent basis, though, with the Daily Mail reporting that Leeds will pay Manchester City £13m to sign Harrison outright this summer.

For Norris, Bielsa and director of football Victor Orta getting this deal done is a no-brainer.

“His attitude, his determination, his endeavour, he does both sides of the game, which is obviously a must with Bielsa, and a good pro,” the ex-Leeds star said.

“Only [heard] good, positive things about him. It’s a no-brainer if they can get that one done.”

For £13m, signing Harrison really does look like a no-brainer. The English attacker has undoubtedly proven himself in the Premier League.

He carried a real threat in attack during the 2020/21 campaign, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists.

Harrison was the most dispossessed Leeds player on average (via WhoScored), so there is room for improvement there. But, overall, you would have to say he would be a quality signing for the Whites based on what he has already produced.

Ipswich miss out on Power deal

A major update has emerged on Ipswich Town target Max Power, regarding where he will be playing his football next season.

What’s the talk?

Ipswich Town target Max Power has officially signed for League One rivals Wigan Athletic. Power has put pen to paper on a two-year deal with Wigan and will link up with his new teammates at the start of next month upon the expiry of his deal at Sunderland.

The East Anglian Daily Times reported earlier this month that Ipswich manager Paul Cook was keen on a reunion with Power after working with the midfielder earlier in his career. Ipswich have now missed out on a deal for Power, with Wigan swooping in to secure a deal with the Sunderland man.

Wigan manager Leam Richardson hailed the “fantastic” midfielder upon his arrival at the club. He told Wigan’s official website:

“Max is a great lad who I really enjoyed working with the first time around. He is fantastic in the dressing room, and a great character to have around the place.

“He still has a lot to offer, he can play a number of different positions as he did during his last spell, and we are delighted to have him back at Wigan Athletic.”

Cook will be devastated

Ipswich manager Cook will be devastated by this update as he has missed out on landing a familiar face ahead of next season. Cook managed Power during their previous spells at Wigan together, which means that the 27-year-old would likely not have needed the adaptation period other signings may need to adjust to Cook and his management style.

Power could have been an excellent addition to Cook’s squad too. He enjoyed a solid season with Sunderland in League One as he averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.74, producing five goals and three assists, across 44 appearances.

He could have added additional, proven, quality to Cook’s options, whilst also being able to play in a variety of positions. The £3.9k-per-week dynamo was deployed as a defensive midfielder, right-back, centre-back and central midfielder in League One for Sunderland last season.

Cook will not be best pleased with Wigan securing Power’s services ahead of Ipswich. CEO Mark Ashton will now need to work hard to source alternative targets in the coming weeks to make sure that Cook has enough quality to mount a promotion push next season.

Dawodu to sign SWFC deal

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a major boost as 20-year-old right-back Josh Dawodu is expected to sign a new contract with the club.

What’s the talk?

Under-23’s right-back Dawodu is set to sign a contract extension with Sheffield Wednesday to prevent him from leaving the club at the end of the month. Dawodu’s current deal expires at the end of June and his agent has revealed that he will be extending his contract with Sheffield Wednesday to put any doubts over his long-term future at the club to bed.

According to The Star, Dawodu trained with the first-team for the majority of the season as Darren Moore looked at the possibility of him making the step up to senior level. The club are said to have high hopes for the up-and-coming right-back.

Dawodu’s agent, Ian Luck, has confirmed that his client is going to put pen to paper on fresh terms at Hillsborough, adding he believes in Moore’s plans for the future. He told The Star:

“He will be signing the new contract he’s been offered… He’s been really impressed with the new manager and is currently in a training camp now so that he’ll be fit and firing by the time he returns to preseason.

“He wants to stay, the goal is to force his way into the first team and become a regular. Josh is working extremely hard to give himself the best chance of doing that, we have had good conversations with Darren Moore and believe in his project for the future.”

Moore will be delighted

Moore will be delighted by this news for a number of reasons. Firstly, the defender is highly thought of at Hillsborough and that suggests that he has the potential to develop into a key first-team player in the future. Therefore, Moore could have the chance to work with Dawodu as a first-team player in League One next season and see how the 20-year-old fares when faced with competitive matches.

The Owls boss will also be buzzing to read the quotes from Luck regarding Dawodu’s thoughts on the former West Brom man. Dawodu is said to have been impressed by Moore since his arrival at the club and that shows that he has been doing something right since taking over during the season. Moore has given Dawodu faith in the long-term plan for the club and that bodes well for the upcoming transfer window as it shows that the manager is capable of convincing young players to buy into his philosophy.

Dawodu could be seen as the eventual successor to Liam Palmer at right-back. Palmer turns 30 in September and is out of contract in 2022, which could open the door for a younger defender to transition into the first-team ahead of him throughout the upcoming campaign with a view to taking over from him full-time for the 2022/23 season. The 29-year-old averaged a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.57 in 39 Championship appearances for Wednesday this season, with a shocking score of 6.38 in 10 starts as a conventional right-back.
