Southampton fans are livid after it was reported that the Saints do not want to get close to Blackburn Rovers’ valuation of striker Adam Armstrong.

Danny Ings dropped a bombshell on Southampton earlier on during this window as he turned down a four-year contract to stay at St. Mary’s Stadium which would have also made him the best paid player in the club’s history (Sky Sports). As such, Saints are in dire need of striker for next term and beyond.

They have been linked with a move for Armstrong, who netted 29 goals in 43 games in all competitions last term (Transfermarkt). However, according to The Lancashire Telegraph, the club do not want to get close to Blackburn’s asking price after having a bid of around £10m rejected for the forward.

The news was shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and it attracted the frustration of the supporters – they clearly feel the board must invest in the squad if Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side want to survive in the top flight. The fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Reports in recent days have claimed that Fernando Hidalgo, the agent of the 21-year-old, is set to meet with Aston Villa’s representatives over a summer move to the Midlands.

Given the kind of rave reviews he has received, the £13.5m-rated ace could well turn out to be a major success at Villa Park were he to join Dean Smith’s side.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live’s World Football Phone-In, South American football expert Tim Vickery said: “I’m a huge fan of Julian Alvarez and I’ve written quite a lot about him already, I think he’s sheer class. He’s not really an out-and-out centre-forward, he’s not really a winger, he’s someone who likes to move across the attacking line, so it’s not easy to fit him into every system. I’ve even seen him used as an attacking midfielder.

“Perhaps for Villa fans, maybe one comparison I would make is with Gary Shaw – and I think Gary Shaw was a great player who was deprived of unbelievable greatness by injuries. I think Alvarez has something of that in him; he’s very classy and he’s really bright.”

Shaw played 165 times across a decade-long spell at Villa Park, scoring 59 goals, and he helped the club to win the First Division in the 1980/81 campaign before playing a big hand in the European Cup triumph a year later.

Like the 5 foot 10 Shaw, the slightly smaller Alvarez (5 foot 7) also has a real eye for goal, managing 11 goal contributions in 20 games for one of Argentina’s biggest and most iconic clubs last season in River Plate.

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce is in talks with Stade Brest over the signing of left-back Romain Perraud this summer, although they are set to face significant Premier League competition for him.

What’s the story?

Despite the Magpies signing Jamal Lewis from Norwich last summer and seeing Matt Ritchie make an impressive return to form in the final few weeks of the Premier League season, it seems that Bruce is keen on landing a new left-back.

According to French publication L’Equipe (via Get French Football News), the Tyneside club, along with Leeds United and Southampton, are in negotiations with Brest over bringing Perraud to the Premier League.

The report added, however, that the Saints currently lead the race to sign him and are hopeful of completing a deal in the coming days.

Far better than Lewis

In the £7.2m-rated Perraud, not only would they be getting a solid defender, but also someone who really comes into his own going forward and provides his team with a vital attacking outlet – this season has seen him record an impressive seven assists in Ligue 1 alone, compared to the measly one that Lewis managed.

Speaking on his podcast, The Athletic’s Leeds correspondent Phil Hay said: “He’s starting to become one of the leading left-backs, seen by many people, as the best left-back or one of them in France’s top division.

“It’s very clear from the performance data that he’s a very attacking left-back, who is good at creating chances, taking shots himself, a real threat going forward, but also really good at employing the press, good as part of a team that likes to press aggressively.”

A player profile from Get French Football News states: “Romain Perraud rapidly became a fan-favourite at the Stade Charlety, thanks to some Roberto Carlos-esque rockets from outside the box. Keeping everything in perspective, Perraud’s style is, on some points, quite similar to the former Real Madrid full-back’s. He has a fighting mentality, an incredible shot power and a left-foot that has proven throughout the season to be a deadly weapon for set-pieces.”

When you compare Perraud’s and Lewis’ stats, they are night and day. The Frenchman averaged more shots, key passes, dribbles, tackles and interceptions per game in the league last season and, at 23, is only a few months older than the Magpies defender.

A major update has emerged about Spanish international Aymeric Laporte, regarding his future at Manchester City.

What’s the talk?

According to AS, Manchester City are not prepared to cash in on Aymeric Laporte this summer. The report claims that Pep Guardiola wants to keep Laporte at the club to compete with Ruben Dias and John Stones for a place in his starting XI.

Earlier this month, Spanish outlet Sport reported that City and Barcelona were in talks over a potential deal for Laporte. Barcelona were said to be keen on bringing Laporte back to Spain and City were seemingly open to working out a solution.

Back in January, City boss Guardiola claimed Laporte has “special quality” with the ball at his feet, but admitted that it is down to his preparation and attitude in regards to whether he plays or not. He told The Guardian:

“It depends on him, the quality is there.

“[He has to] be in top form and have his mind open. He’s the best left-sided defender [we have], he has special quality with the ball. He has to be focused to come back in the best condition possible and he will get his minutes. After, it depends on his performance like it depends on the form of everyone.”

Fans will be buzzing

Manchester City fans will be buzzing with this news as it means that the club will avoid making a major error this summer. It was only two years ago that Laporte was named in the PFA Team of the Year for his performances at centre-back and it was only a couple of months ago that Laporte was scoring the winner in the League Cup final for City against Tottenham at Wembley. He has proven his quality throughout his time in England and it would have been a mistake for the club to sell him to Barcelona.

In 75 Premier League appearances for Manchester City, Laporte has only been on the losing side eight times. City only conceded 41 times and kept 32 clean sheets in those 75 games, whilst Laporte has made zero errors leading to goals. This is a reminder of the impact he can have and why City are making the right call by keeping him at The Etihad heading into next season.

The 27-year-old beast can now provide Stones and Dias with quality competition for places in the 2021/22 campaign for City. This will, hopefully, help all three defenders to progress as they spur each other on to keep improving in order to maintain their place in the team, or win it back.

It also means that Guardiola will not be left with inadequate replacements if either Dias or Stones needs to drop out of the side due to rest, injury or suspension. This is why fans will be delighted that Laporte will seemingly still be a City player beyond the end of the transfer window.
