Brenden Aaronson: Leeds prepare second bid

Leeds United are preparing another offer for top transfer target Brenden Aaronson…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the ever-reliable Phil Hay of The Athletic.

“Leeds United considering upping their bid for Brenden Aaronson to £20m. The club want him in this window, although if RB Salzburg dig their heels in, it’s one which could wait until the summer. Leeds rate him very highly,” he tweeted with an accompanying article.

Earlier this week, the Yorkshire outfit had a £15m bid rejected by the Austrian champions as they remain intent on keeping their star midfielder.

The Yorkshire outfit are said to have sent director of football Victor Orta to Salzburg to try and thrash out a deal, whilst it is believed that they do not want to offload any player this month due to their upcoming Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Keep trying!

Indeed, much of the talk suggests that it’s a losing race as the Austrian outfit simply will not sell one of Matthias Jaissle’s key players. However, history would tell us otherwise.

In the past, the club have cashed in on the likes of Erling Haaland (£18m to Borussia Dortmund), Dominik Szoboszlai (£18m t0 RB Leipzig) and Sadio Mane (£10m to Southampton).

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news-2″ title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

That suggests that for the right offer, historically, Salzburg have sold. They are ultimately a selling club as they always have young talents being developed.

Therefore, supporters and even manager Marcelo Bielsa should be encouraged by Hay’s latest report as there’s a chance the Austrians cave in, no matter what other claims are telling us.

Aaronson would be a hugely exciting signing for Leeds, too. He very much fits the profile that the Argentinian head coach desires – hard-working, bundles of energy and very, very versatile.

He has delivered ten goals and 12 assists in 51 appearances for Salzburg, via Transfermarkt, whilst American reporters have likened him to both Yossi Benayoun and Clint Dempsey, who both have had an impact in the Premier League in the past.

It appears as if Leeds aren’t giving up, so those around Elland Road must be buzzing by this latest update.

No entanto, o grupo cruz-maltino evita pensar nisso.

Hoje treinei no campo, me senti melhor.

Momentum is with us – de Villiers

AB de Villiers is confident that South Africa have the upperhand 48 hours ahead of the final Test of the two-match series, starting at the Eden Gardens on Sunday

N Hunter in Kolkata12-Feb-2010AB de Villiers is confident that South Africa have the upperhand 48 hours ahead of the final Test of the two-match series, starting at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. “Cricket is all about momentum and confidence,” de Villiers said after another strenuous training session, lasting four hours. “We have won two Test matches in a row and we are a well-balanced side. But we still have to win a series.”Before their innings victory in the Nagpur Test, South Africa had trounced England in the final Test at the Wanderers to level the four-match series 1-1. But de Villiers admitted that the South Africans failed to cash in on winning the home series against England, especially since they were standing on the brink of victory at least twice.”It was very disappointing to not win the series. The consolation was we dominated most of the Test series but that means nothing at the end of the day, as it was 1-1.”But the team retained the winning momentum from Johannesburg, which de Villiers said helped them to take charge immediately into the India series. “We focused on the last Test match (Johannesburg), and won that one and took forward the confidence and momentum into the Nagpur Test and that has obviously shown,” he said.In Nagpur, South Africa outplayed India on all fronts, including in the spin department, an area India were expected to hold the edge. But Paul Harris’ tenacious performance even put Harbhajan Singh to shame as India’s main spinner failed miserably in imposing himself over the opposition. A telling statistic was Harbhajan managed to bowl just one maiden over compared to the South African left-armer’s 17 in the crucial second innings, which not only curtailed the Indian batsmen’s movements but also dried up the runs.According to de Villiers, now that India are in a tight corner, they would be desperate to bounce back and use every available option. One shot in the arm in the return of VVS Laxman form the wrist injury. In the absence of Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh in the middle order, Laxman’s return counts crucial for India who made three changes after the defeat in the first Test. South Africa remain undeterred. But they are not taking the Indians lightly even if they looked a demoralised lot across the four days in Nagpur.”There is no need to change our gameplans when we are winning Test matches,” de Villiers said. “It is going to be a great challenge here at the Eden Gardens. I’m pretty sure India will come back with a big fight.”

Wolves confirm Aaron Keto-Diyawa signing

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Aaron Keto-Diyawa has signed professional terms at Molineux.

What’s the latest?

In a recent statement on the Wolves website, the club revealed that the 18-year-old left wing-back has put pen to paper on his first contract with the Premier League side, having joined the Black Country club from Fulham as a first-year scholar back in the summer of 2020.

In reaction to his signing, Wolves’ technical director, Scott Sellars, said: “Aaron came into the academy from Fulham last summer because we thought he had potential and a great left foot, and he’s really settled in well to the club and has shown a great attitude.

“We knew he was a good athlete, but he’s another really hard worker and has a great work ethic, which has allowed him to thrive at Wolves since he’s been here, but he’s really kicked on to another level in the last six months.

“He’s been very consistent and when he has had the chance to jump up into the U23s, he’s performed well and not looked out of place at all. All season he’s performed to a very consistent level and that is why he is deserving of his pro contract.”

Exciting times

Considering the sheer amount of potential Keto-Diyawa possesses, the news that Wolves have tied the teenager down to a professional contract is sure to have left fans of the club rather excited.

Indeed, it is clear to see why Tim Spiers suggested that “big things are expected” of the 18-year-old, as the left-back featured in all but four of Wolves U18s’ Premier League North fixtures last season, in addition to having played every available minute for the U18s so far this term.

The defender also impressed when making the step up to U23 football, completing 41 passes, one dribble, making three clearances, one tackle and winning three duels against Wigan Athletic in the Papa Johns Trophy – with these returns seeing the youngster earn a respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.5.

With Wolves struggling for numbers in their first team, tying down players like the teenager is incredibly advantageous for Lage and co who are having to work with slim pickings. Journalist Luke Hatfield has already outlined this as a problem so developing the likes of Keto-Diyama should be exciting for supporters and coaches alike at Molineux.

It undoubtedly appears as if the 18-year-old has a very bright future ahead of him in the professional game – a future which, after the recent development, looks as if it will be at Molineux.

Di Venuto double brings title closer

For Durham, it was a day where they moved inextricably towards the retaining the main prize. Their opening batsmen, led by Michael Di Venuto’s outstanding double century, added 314 and put the Nottinghamshire bowlers to the sword

John Ward at Chester-le-Street09-Sep-2009
ScorecardMichael Di Venuto picks off another boundary as his double century led a remorseless display from Durham•Getty ImagesFor Nottinghamshire, one of two outside challengers to Durham for the title, it was one of those days where everything goes wrong from start to finish. First, they were unable to play Andre Adams through illness. Then they lost the toss and had to take the field on a fine batting wicket under a largely blue sky on a mild day. For Durham, it was a day where they moved inextricably towards the retaining the main prize. Their opening batsmen, led by Michael Di Venuto’s outstanding double century, added 314 and put the Nottinghamshire bowlers to the sword, while the visitors also lost two of their top players through injury.Durham for their part were without Callum Thorp, due to a back injury, but they do have Steve Harmison in their side. Kyle Coetzer, newly promoted to opening batsman, went in first with the regular, Di Venuto and was the only man to fall – for the small matter of 107. At the start, Charlie Shreck and Darrin Pattinson bowled well for Nottinghamshire, and they began with three maiden overs. When runs did come, they came painfully for a while until Coetzer broke the shackles with a fine off-drive for four off Pattinson, and then he took two off-side boundaries from drives off Shreck.Di Venuto was so long settling in that he scored just 3 off his first 32 balls, but then began to open up. Coetzer still favoured the covers, but Nottinghamshire eventually wised up and changed their line and length to him. Di Venuto caught and overtook him in the thirties, and at lunch the score was 90, both batsmen in the forties. By now the visitors had lost their captain and wicketkeeper, Chris Read, who dislocated a thumb. Mark Ealham had to take over the leadership, while Bilal Shafayat went behind the stumps.Di Venuto went to his 50 fifteen minutes after the break off 96 balls and then hammered a ball through the covers to bring up the team and partnership hundred. His favourite stroke was the slash off the back foot through the covers, and he had plenty of opportunity to play it, as the Nottinghamshire bowling began to crumble. It took Coetzer 115 balls and until 45 minutes after lunch to reach his own 50, which included as many as 11 fours.Nottinghamshire began to wilt under the onslaught; there were some lapses in the field and Shreck injured his leg while chasing a ball and had to limp off the ground. Luke Fletcher looked rusty after a long lay-off through injury, and Di Venuto hit him out of the attack with three fours in an over. Pattinson, economical early on, was very expensive in his second spell, while Samit Patel, although finding some turn at times, was far from thrifty. The one man able to contain the flow of runs to any extent was Ealham with his accurate medium-pacers, and he occasionally beat the batsmen but without luck.A cover drive off Pattinson took Di Venuto to his century off 140 balls, and the team’s 200 came up in the fiftieth over. The pair now overtook the county’s previous highest opening partnership in Championship cricket, and kept going. The first chance of the day came when Di Venuto edged a ball from Patel to slip, who was either asleep or else just did not see it until too late, as he failed to get a hand to it. At tea the total was 263, the batsmen 149 and 94 respectively. After the break a cut from Coetzer off Patel brought up his century, which took him 215 balls and contained 20 fours, a tribute to his ability to dispatch the bad ball with brutal efficiency. The 300 came up with a similar shot from Di Venuto off the occasional bowler Alex Hales. Then the old saying about the only way a wicket could fall would be through a run-out came true. At 314, Di Venuto drove firmly to mid-off, where Ealham made a fine stop. Coetzer incorrectly anticipated a run, but Di Venuto sent him back. However, he was just unable to make his ground and was run out for 107.For the captain Will Smith it was a case of after the Lord Mayor’s show. He struggled for 28 balls before getting off the mark with a risky single – which brought him another four runs thanks to an overthrow – and he had already been dropped off a simple leg-side catch to the keeper off Pattinson. But Di Venuto powered relentlessly on, reaching 200 off 258 balls, and Smith battled his way onward with a little more confidence. Both were still there at the close, the players walking off the field to the unusual accompaniment of bright sunshine. On 219, Di Venuto must be entertaining visions of a maiden triple-century; his highest score is currently 254 not out. More importantly, though, for Durham is that the title is getting ever closer.

Aston Villa: Fonseca’s agent makes contact

Paulo Fonseca’s representatives have contacted Aston Villa over the vacant managerial position, according to The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Villa’s Fonseca contact

Villa officially parted ways with Dean Smith on Sunday following a fifth successive defeat in the Premier League. However, a few days before the 1-0 loss to Southampton, the 50-year-old already appeared to be on borrowed time, with Villa making initial contact with Fonseca.

The 48-year-old, who was described as ‘very intelligent’ by Claudio Ranieri, has been out of work since the summer after he left AS Roma.

The Latest: Fonseca’s agent makes move…

The Daily Record’s Keith Jackson shared a story late on Monday night regarding Rangers’ 48-hour wait to see if Aston Villa will make a formal approach for Steven Gerrard.

Within their report, they suggested that Fonseca’s agents, who were involved in talks with Newcastle, have also contacted Villa to throw the Portuguese’s name into the hat for the vacancy in the Midlands.

The Verdict: Shrewd Gerrard alternative?

Ashley Preece believes that all signs are pointing towards Gerrard taking over from Smith at this moment in time, but should the club fail to bring the Rangers man to Villa Park, then Fonseca could be a good alternative.

He has a clear playing style with a preferred 3-4-2-1 system and has won nine honours as a manager in two different countries.

He has also been hailed by the likes of Ranieri and Antonio Conte, two Premier League-winning managers, so the Villa hierarchy could be clever to keep one eye on Fonseca while they pursue Gerrard.
